TheAssamRiflescantracetheirlineagebacktoaparamilitarypolice
forcethatwasformedundertheBritishin1835calledCacharLevy.
SincethentheAssamRifleshaveundergoneanumberofnamechanges
beforethenameAssamRifleswasfinallyadoptedin1917.[2]Overthe
courseofitshistory,theAssamRiflesanditspredecessorunitshave
servedinanumberofroles,conflictsandtheatresincludingWorldWar
IwheretheyservedinEuropeandtheMiddleEast,andWorldWarII
wheretheyservedmainlyinBurma.InthepostWorldWarIIperiodthe
AssamRifleshasexpandedgreatlyashasitsrole.Therearecurrently
AssamRiflespersonnel
46battalions[3]ofAssamRiflesunderthecontroloftheIndianMinistry
ofHomeAffairs(MHA)andtheyperformmanyrolesincludingthe
provisionofinternalsecurityunderthecontrolofthearmythroughthe
conductofcounterinsurgencyandbordersecurityoperations,provisionofaidtothecivilpowerintimesof
emergency,andtheprovisionofcommunications,medicalassistanceandeducationinremoteareas.[4]Intimes
ofwartheycanalsobeusedasacombatforcetosecurerearareasifneeded.

ThespecialFrontierforce(SFF)isparamilitaryunitofIndia.ItwasconceivedinthepostSinoIndianwar
periodasaguerrillaforcecomposedmainlyofTibetanwhoareresidentsofIndiawhosemaingoalwasto
conductcovertoperationsbehindChineselinesincaseofanotherwarbetweenthePeople'sRepublicofChina
andIndia.

BasedinChakrata,Uttarakhand,SFFisalsoknownastheEstablishment22.[5][6]Theforcewasputunderthe
directsupervisionoftheIntelligenceBureau,andlater,theResearchandAnalysisWing,India'sexternal
intelligenceagency.[7]
