Criteria A

1. Is Rope skipping a sport? Justify your answer.

I believe rope skipping is a sport. First, rope skipping could train your muscles and enhance your
fitness. Similar to other sports, rope skipping uses the large muscles of your legs and also burns a high
number of calories. Moreover, by cooperating with others, rope skipping could build up your team spirit
like many other team sports.

2. Is Rope skipping more popular in the USA high schools amongst students than in Hong
Kong schools? List 2 reasons to support your answer.
Yes, rope skipping is more popular among the high schools in the USA than Hong Kong.
First, the high schools in the USA have more space for rope skipping compared to Hong Kong. Since
Hong Kong has a lack of land supply, it is difficult for high schools to provide enough space for rope
skipping. On the other hand, USA has sufficient space to provide the opportunity students to do rope
jumping, which largely arouses the students interest in rope skipping.
Another reason why rope skipping is more popular in the USA compared to Hong Kong is because
students in Hong Kong do not pay too much attention on sports. Since Hong Kong is extremely exam-
orientated, students put their main focus on the students academic results rather than sports.
However, the US students strike a balance on both the students academics and sports.
Due to the reasons above, rope skipping is more popular in USA high schools amongst students than
in Hong Kong schools.

3. What are the benefits of rope skipping? Give 3 reasons from physical aspect and 3 from
mental (psychological) and social aspect.
From the physical aspect, rope skipping could burn a high number of calories even jumping in a
moderate rate. Also, it helps to improve your heart rate and blood pressure. Besides, it could enhance
your flexibility and balance.
From its mental point of view , rope skipping improves your ability to stay calm as you are working with
your brain and your body at the same time. Furthermore, it could also train your brain in terms of
rhythm and strategy,
From its social aspect, by cooperating with a partner, rope skipping could enhance your coordination
with others and build up team spirit.

4. What have you learnt after conducting this research? Has it changed your attitude towards
this sport / physical activity?
After conducting the research above, I have gained much more knowledge rope skipping. Before this
unit, I used to think that rope skipping is a boring, repetitive physical activity. However, after doing
research, I learnt about different types of skipping moves, which largely aroused my interest in rope
skipping. In addition, I also understood how rope skipping is beneficial to me, which largely motivates
me to do rope skipping even more.

5. The FISAR-IRSF World Rope Skipping Championships 2014 was held in Hong Kong from
27th July 2014 - 5th August 2014; but the media coverage was far less than FIFA World Cup
2014 or FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix (Hong Kong station) 2014.
i. Discuss the reasons for the lack of popularity & media coverage in rope skipping
championships.
The reason why rope skipping has a lack of popularity is because it is not well-promoted throughout
the education industry. Rope skipping is an activity that requires a large amount of space. However,
with its insufficient land resources, the schools in Hong Kong were not able to provide enough space
for rope skipping. Since it is not feasible, the government did not promote rope skipping broadly to the
youngsters in Hong Kong, leading to the lack of popularity in rope skipping championships.
In addition, Hong Kong has a lack of media coverage on rope jumping since the government did not
put much emphasis on rope skipping. As mentioned before, rope skipping is not feasible in Hong Kong
has it requires a large amount of space, which Hong Kong lacks. Thus, the government decided to
promote other sports instead of rope skipping. As a result, other sports such as football and volleyball
were promoted more frequently throughout the media, leading to the lack of media coverage of rope
skipping championships.

ii. If you are the organizer or sponsor for the Rope skipping championships, what would you
do to attract more attention in the society? How would you promote and market this sports
event in the future if HK is going to hold the championship again in 2016?
I would attract more attention in the society by promoting rope skipping widely in Hong Kong. Firstly, I
would promote rope skipping to both primary and secondary school students, by holding talks and
tryouts in their school, in order to enhance their interest in rope skipping.
Moreover, I would set up training courses to the youngsters as well as hold rope skipping competition
among the schools so as to search for new talents for the rope skipping industry in Hong Kong.
Furthermore, I would encourage the talented skippers to participate in worldwide competitions, in order
seek for the societys attention towards rope skipping and increase Hong Kongs competitiveness
throughout the world.

6. Hong Kong team had great results in the Rope skipping Championship in summer 2016
(Sweden). It has finally attracted wider media coverage on the sport achievements. Discuss
(i) from different aspects (social, family, school and government), give 4 reasons for the
significant improvement and achievement of HK rope skipping.
From the social aspect, the public may have enhanced their interest in rope skipping, leading to its rise
of popularity and support among the community.
From the familys point of view, more parents may have given support and encouragement to their
children to participate in rope skipping such as taking training courses and participating in
competitions.
Moreover, the school may have hold more activities based on rope skipping, which aroused more
students interest in rope skipping.
Furthermore, the government may have promoted rope skipping more widely to the community. Thus,
more and more people would try to engage in this activity. As a result, more people will become skillful
at rope skipping.
(ii) why is there a change in media attitude
After gaining this achievement, the community believed that Hong Kong has the potential in rope
skipping. Therefore, the media have changed its attitude towards rope skipping, in order to promote
rope skipping more broadly in Hong Kong and maintain Hong Kongs reputation throughout the world.

Overall, I believed the movement plan have successfully help us to create our routine.
First, the plan enables me to be more organized as it tells us the order and the difficulty of our moves.
Moreover, the photos in the plan provided me a good demonstration on how to perform the moves. By looking
through this plan, I was able to perform my moves correctly in a short period of time.
In addition, by justifying the moves, I am able to understand how these moves help my physical health.
Therefore, the movement plan have gave much guidance to me when creating the routine.

Criteria D
1. Explain and demonstrate strategies to enhance interpersonal skills
Throughout the routine, I have used strategies to enhance my cooperation with others. Firstly, when
we were performing some of the moves that involves all three of us, such as triplets, we would count the beats
together in order to enhance our timing, which allows us to perform these moves accurately.
Secondly, when someone is performing their individual moves, I would help her to count the beats and also remind
her next move too.
Thirdly, when I help to swing the rope for others, I would consider their speed of jumping and make adjustments on
how fast I swing the rope.
Therefore, I have applied strategies when I was cooperating with others.

2. Develop goals and apply strategies to enhance performance

In order to enhance my performance, I have developed goals and demonstrated strategies.
Firstly, in the beginning, when I was performing the double healix, I was not able to jump between the ropes in the
right position. As a result, I drew a marking on the floor so I could remember the spot I should stay when I enter the
rope. Fortunately, with the help of the marking, I have jumped in the right sport and successfully performed my
double dutch.
Secondly, when practicing the routine, I often do things step by step in order to enhance my performance. For
example, at first, I was not able to perform some of the simple moves, such as the x step. As a result, I started
doing that move from the basic. First, I practiced it by crossing my legs over and over again repetitively on the
ground without jumping. Then, I tried to add the rope while doing that move. In the end, I successfully performed
the x step.
Hence, it is seen that I have demonstrated strategies in order to improve my performance.

3. Analyse and evaluate performance.

Overall, I believe my performance was satisfactory.
Although some mistakes were made, I was still correct them and learn it as a lesson. For example, when some of
the moves are performed incorrectly, I would try my best to change them and learn these mistakes as a lesson.
Despite some of the minor mistakes made, most of the moves were performed correctly in the routine. Therefore, I
have demonstrated accuracy throughout my performance.
Besides, I often challenge myself by doing many complex moves. Although I have failed several times when I was
performing those moves, I still did not give up and kept trying harder. This enables me to improve my performance
and strive my best.
