Tuned in
Have you gotten a jump on purchasing a 14 Mustang?
DiabloSport [(561) 908-0041; www.diablosport.com] is right
there with you with its new inTune I-1000. The DiabloSport
inTune I-1000 is able to provide more adjustments and tun-
ing options in the tool than any other tuner today, according
to the company. The inTune I-1000 has the capability to log
and record vehicle data, and offer specific adjustments to
tweak your Mustangs tune for whatever bolt-on mods youve
installed. The inTune features a color touchscreen, diagnostic
capabilities, free automatic online updates, and its the size of a
compact mobile phone.
4Ward Thinking
By this point, we all know the Coyote engine benefits
from the addition of headers. JBAs [(909) 599-5955;
www.jbaheaders.com] Cat4Ward offering fits 11-13
Mustang GTs, and are made with 3-inch-thick flanges at
the cylinder head, and connectors designed to connect
to the factory catalytic converter pipes. The four-tube
design is made from 16-gauge tubing with 134-inch
primaries for increased horsepower and torque,
and they fit both automatic and manual-
transmission cars. The best thing about
these headers is theyre emissions-legal
with a corresponding C.A.R.B. number,
making them legal for use in California.
Clearly visible
When it comes to gauges, Auto Meter [(866) 248-6356; www.autometer.com] has the Mustang market covered. You cant walk
by a Mustang at the track without seeing at least one Auto Meter product. Powered by race-hardened, precision internals, Auto
Meters new GT Series gauges are equipped with cutting edge, white LED illumination to make them easy to read in all conditions.
Fitted matte black bezels minimize glare while aircraft inspired dials constructed from real carbon fiber clearly communicate critical
performance data.
signaTure Fluid
Lets face it, theres nothing really sexy about transmission
fluid. You put it in your transmission and never think anything
of it again until you need more. Amsoils [(715) 392-7101;
www.amsoil.com] new Signature Series line of transmission fluid
now includes a Ford application designed to provide outstanding
performance at all temperatures and excellent oxidation stabil-
ity. Its also formulated to improve fuel efficiency, reduce trans-
mission temperatures, and increase equipment longevity.
Cool MounT
With street and drag Mustangs these days, theres less and less space for extra gear. Thankfully, if you need to mount an oil cooler any-
where on your Mustang, Earls [(270) 782-2900; www.holley.com] has this new bracket system to make it easier to find the perfect mount-
ing spot. Naturally, this system works with Earls oil coolers, features anodized aluminum construction with e-coated steel hardware and
rubber isolators to rigidly mount an oil cooler. The rubber isolators keep vibration at bay to make for a long life for your oil cooler, but
they also help make the best of less-than-ideal mounting situations.
TriCk Carbs
Good things happen when manufacturers join forces to
improve a product. In this case, Trick Flow [(330) 630-1555;
www.trickflow.com] teamed up with Quick Fuel Technologies
to produce a line of street and strip carburetors. Trick Flows
Street Heat carburetor is a 4500-style, 650-cfm offering featur-
ing mechanical secondaries, downleg boosters, and a solid-state
electric choke. The companys Track Heat and Track Heat Pro
carburetors feature many of those same features, but in
750-cfm and 850-cfm offerings, respectively. The Trick Flow
Race carburetor is the top dog of the group as a
Dominator-style, 1,050-cfm offering designed for
high-horsepower applications.
sTrike iT big
Ever since the Fox days, weve been in love with the big n
littles look on our Mustangs. Rocket Racing Wheels [(888) 307-
7525; www.rocketracingwheels.com] now has its Rocket Strike
wheel in a big n little fashion. Choose from polished or as-cast
finishes in 15x412-, 15x6-, 15x7-, 15x8-, and 15x10-inch sizes.
The Rocket Strike wheels are crafted from A356 aluminum and
topped with an aluminum O-ring center cap.

strip, while offering comfort and control on the street. These are mono-tube, gas-charged, and designed to increase
launch control and grip for improved consistency. They mount in the stock location on 87-04 Mustangs.
Fire bad

Mustang? Redline Performance Motorsports [(419) 944-0207;
www.shoprpmonline.com] has what you need. This fire extinguisher
bolts in using a factory hole, which means no drilling is necessary.
Made with a quality, lightweight aluminum and featuring a powder-
coated finish, the fully charged fire extinguisher is ready to come to
your Mustangs rescue should the moment call for its use. It comes as
a complete assembly with instructions and ready to bolt in.
Fly WeighT
If youre already upgrading your 12-13 Mustang GTs flywheel, check out Fidanzas [(440) 259-5656; www.fidanza.com] lightweight alu-
minum offering. This flywheel is made from 6061 T6 aluminum for optimum weight reduction and tensile strength, designed to deliver faster
acceleration, quicker throttle response, better vehicle braking, increased clutch efficiency, and long-lasting durability. Featuring a Rockwell
hardened ring gear, this SFI 1.1 flywheel is built tough and will never require re-surfacing or replacement when swapping out clutches. 5.0

After a long period of upgrades, Project Shocker is back together and running strong! Seen here in street mode, it could almost pass as just another 13-second
5.0 if the windows were tinted. It has an innocent-looking profile with the stock-appearing Aeromotive Stealth fuel tank and the parachute removed. However, the
Shockers Tig-Vision-tweaked UPR Products suspension hunkered down on these beautiful Holeshot Performance Wheels and Mickey Thompson tires would probably
give away the cars sinister intent even if the windows were blacked out. Speaking of street mode, we special-ordered the Holeshot Holestar wheels with 58-inch
centers which are thicker than standard centers so they will withstand the abuse our car might encounter while street driving. The 15x10-inch, three-piece rear
wheels wear 275/60-15 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials, while two-piece 15x4-inch wheels wrapped with 26x6R-15 Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R skinnies

plagued with numerous new car bugs. Despite our
best efforts, we never did achieve the ceremonial

The Horse Whisperer, Tim Ike Eichhorn at Mustang
Performance Racing in Boynton Beach, Florida. As
it turned out, a minor electrical problem prevented
the big Windsor from firing up while cranking the
starter. Unfortunately, your overzealous author
kept right on cranking which ultimately caused it
to fuel-wash the cylinders and destroy the piston
ring seal. It was one simple, but expensive lesson
learned. Ike tore apart the brand-new engine, per-
formed the necessary repairs, and dropped it back
into the Shocker. Next, he went over the car from
front to back, in order to ensure that no other rookie
mistakes on our part would prevent the car from
running perfectly. When Ike called us to swing by
MPR for the ceremonial first start up we were skep-
tical, but sure enough the car fired right up, and boy
did it sound angry! In this photo, Ike was checking
for leaks while his son Tyler cycled the fuel pump.
Tyler performs quite a bit of work at MPR and he
earned an NMRA Signature Award for Outstanding
Sportsmanship or Racing Skill in 2012. It seems that
the apple doesnt fall far from the tree.
Given your authors OCD tendencies, it was absolutely necessary to rework all of Project Shockers wiring.
So we spent at least 50 hours removing every unnecessary circuit from each harness in order to make the
wiring much easier to work on in the future. Weight loss from the wires we removed was negligible, but the
end result was much cleaner. Most importantly, everything works! It is unusual to see a Fox Mustang with an
SFI 25.2 chassis and functional power windows, power locks, power mirrors, and other accessories.

Far from a golden-spoon story,
Christophers deal was that he was
completely on his own for all insurance,

modifications he had in mind. Of course,
he had plenty in mind, cause what he
had really wanted was a Cobra. But the
economic realities of a teenager meant

HOrse sense: Ultimate Street at a DuckX Productions race is a displacement- and power-adder-limited class designed to back
up the ultra-popular X275 class. Generally speaking, the turbos, blowers, and nitrous systems allowed in Ultimate Street are a step
down from whats allowed in X275, but in many cases the winner can still take home $5,000, which is a nice chunk of change.
The Cobras interior is a stark contrast to the cars stock exterior. Inside its all race car with Kirkey Racing
seats, a 10-point rollcage with Wolfe Racecraft through-the-floor subframe connectors, a Hurst Quarter Stick
shifter, an AMS-1000 boost controller, Todd Berry-built intercooler, and an assortment of Auto Meter gauges.
The current 9:1 compression, 342ci engine was already in the car when Eric purchased the Cobra. The
builder is unknown, but the engine features a Ford Racing R-302 standard bore block with a 3.4-inch-stroke
crank, Eagle H-beam rods, and JE forged pistons. A Bennett Racing solid-roller cam actuates 2.08/1.60 valves

HOrse sense: Since the Atlanta NMRA event was rained out when many of the classes were down to either semi-finals
or final round, those match-ups were decided during qualifying rounds at MIR, except for the Street Outlaw class, which was
decided July 12-14 at the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing in Joliet, Illinois.
sTReeT ouTlAw
Thankfully, the revamped Street Outlaw class flourished under the new rules implemented for 2013. One thing that hasnt changed is John Uristhes still at the top
of his game. Switching back to a turbo for the 2013 season, John found there was a short learning curve to get back in the groove, but at MIR he showed why he has
97 NMRA championships. OK, so thats a slight exaggeration, but it seems he has that many. He qualified at the top of Street Outlaw
with a 7.154, but he had to rely on quick reaction times to get the event win. Johns slowest reaction time during eliminations was
a 0.434 light, which was in the final against Phil Hines. Both in the semis and the final round, John used holeshots to outrun his
opponents and get the win.
Phil Hines is having quite a year. He was able to eclipse the 6-second zone earlier in the year, and he got the
event win at the NMRA Bradenton opener. At MIR, his ProCharger-motivated machine looked to be on a mis-
sion. He qualified right on the heels of John Urist with a 7.156. He was the model of consistency in elimina-
tions, running a 7.14 in Round 1, a 7.15 in the semis, and a 7.12 in the final against John Urist. However, it
wasnt enoughJohn had gotten the jump, and Phil ran out of pavement to get the win.

Brian Mitchell has his 13 program working really well. Earlier in the year, he
struggled with e.t.s, but it seems hes found his Renegade cars sweet spot.
As has been the case the past couple years, Brian is again the one to beat.
Hes got a tenth on the field at almost every event, and at MIR it was more
of the same. The only other car in the neighborhood is one Brian helps out
onAdam Arndts Fox racer. True to form, Brian and Adam were the last ones racin on Sunday. If we have
learned anything since following the NMRA, its that Brian Mitchell is one of the most consistent racers in
its history. That consistency led to the win when he was able to show Adam the student has much to learn
before beating the teacher.
Having missed a couple races due to
body, chassis, and cage overhauls,
Renegade racer Adam Arndt was
ready to put his 88 GT in the thick
of things. Thats exactly what he did,
too. He qualified right behind Brian
Mitchell with an 8.36 at 162 mph,
but he wasnt able to duplicate that
performance, especially when it mat-
tered in the final against Brian. Adam
runs a HD Performance-built, 310ci
small-block with a Vortech YSi-Trim
supercharger. Adam tunes the car
with a lot of help from the guy he met
in the final, Brian Mitchell.

It was a really good

Stock racer Shiftin
Shane Stymiest. First
off, he won the rained-
out Atlanta race against Jacob Lamb, and in the
process, qualified at the top of the list with a mind-
bending 10.38 at 127 mph. Shanes 0.38 was the
talk of Coyote Stock qualifying, leaving his fellow
racers scratching their heads. With night qualifying
at MIR, Shane looked like he best took advantage of
the cool air. He came back to the pack with consis-
tent high-10.40s/low-10.50s on Sunday, which was
good enough for him to take the win to garner two

Matt Amrines ritual is to make a pass, come back to the pits, do a
little routine maintenance, ice the engine down with his custom cooler
setup, and look over data with crew chief Brandon Alsept. Then its
time to kick back and prepare for the next round. Maybe in between hell catch a few bites made by his wife,
Danielle, and hang with her, Brandon, and Brian Campbell. Then he, Brandon, and Brian go over the plan for
the next qualifying pass, or elimination round, then its all up to Matt once hes buckled in. Matt was still in
the hunt for the rained-out Atlanta race, but John Leslie Jr. was able to get past him in the semi-final round
for that event. However, Matt was able to exact a little revenge in the final for the MIR race, getting the win.
Being at the track is like a family reunion for John Leslie Jr. You can pretty much find his whole family at
every NMRA race. Bad thing is, sister Sondra also races in Factory Stock, and just like Alton and Valerie
Clements in Renegade, they have to race each other pretty much every race. At MIR, that was again the
case. After John won the rained-out Atlanta race, he had to face Sondra in Round 1. Since John was in the
Maryland groove, he was able to move past Sondra and back into a rematch against Matt Amrine in the final.
Unfortunately for John, he was unable to duplicate his previous times, handing the event win to Matt.

If you want
an 8-second
Terminator,
Harold Horton
has done all the
work for you.
His simple recipe is a stock long-block, a Whipple
4.0-liter supercharger, 27 pounds of boost, a Frank
Lupo Proformance C4, a Team Z Motorsports 9-inch
rear, Strange Engineering shocks and struts, a Wolfe
Racecraft anti-rollbar, Mickey Thompson ET Drag
slicks (Stiff sidewall), and E85. That simplicity works
out to consistent 8.70s and a win in the VMP Tuning
GT500/Terminator shootout at MIR. Joe Cool of JWC
Performance did a lot of the work on the car, while
Dave Guy handled the tuning. Sean Wiley of Frank
Lupos Dynamic Converters did the transmission,
and, of course, Dave Zimmerman is the main man at
Team Z Motorsports.

Donnie Bowles is
another racer able
to double-up by
winning both the
rained-out Atlanta
final and the MIR event. Final-round opponent and
fellow Roush racer Susan McClenaghan would rath-
er not see Donnie in the other lane anytime soon.
Donnie bested Susan at the Atlanta race, and again
in the final at MIR with a poor-attempt-at-a-redlight
0.004 reaction time. Susan had to stay in the gas
to chase him down and broke out in the process.
Donnie was right on his number, anyway, so he
wasnt going to be denied at MIR.

Our boy Pete Espeut was a
busy man at MIR. He was the
only person to sign up for the
SVT Bracket showdown, rac-
ing his 95 Cobra R to victory
since no one else showed
up. Ill take it any way I can
get it, Pete says. He wasnt
done, though. Since Pete has about 12 Mustangs,
he brought his 10 Shelby GT500 to race in Super
Stang. Running a 10.60 index, Pete did his work at
the Tree when it counted, getting the win.

Randy Conway has one of the more sinister-looking Mustangs in the NMRA.
With blacked-out headlights, exhaust out the front fender extensions, and a
mini-tubbed rear full of tire, his 89 coupe looks like its in a bad mood.
In Open Comp, Randy put in work at MIR only for Tony Murray to hand him
the win in the final with a redlight. Randy also raced Truck and Lightning,
but didnt fare as well as he did in Open Comp.

desire a signature exhaust note to modify sounds is extremely subjective. However, we adjusted Vari-Tunes for several different sound
sound levels by as much as 8 decibels. Of on the power sideand BBKs claim is levels, and captured decibel and power informa-

then making a half-turn adjustment, and then
another half-turn adjustment (to represent one

full-open stage.
On the performance side, its definitely not often that we see simple axle-back exhaust affect horsepower and torque by such large margins. From the baseline
(peak) of 346.54 hp/355.51 lb-ft, gains were seen immediately after the Vari-Tune mufflers were installed in closed setting (349.66 hp /358.70 lb-ft) with exhaust
flowing through both baffles (in its standard path). As both the graph and its accompanying dyno chart show, power and torque increases were seen in nearly all of
our recorded incremental changes, with the largest gains coming when we fully opened the Vari-Tunes for exhaust flow through only one baffle.

her daily car. Its also her show car, so she is plenty busy. The cars a Premium Package 45th Anniversary V-6 coupe, and features Ford

Orange plenum cover; custom trunk enclosures; and chrome accents on the side mirrors, door handles, quarter-windows, and gas
door. Of the 49,000 miles on the car at press time, Michelle figures 40,000 of those are road-trip miles to and from her hometown of

Premium Pony
Leander, Texas Rich Hovan is the proud owner of this 12 Mustang GT boasting a Premium Pony red leather interior with a Mach
1000 audio system and Boss 302 dash cluster. The outside was treated to a Laguna Seca front splitter with additional driving lights
and FRPP wheels. The GTs handling is upgraded thanks to Laguna Seca sway bars, struts, and shocks. However, magic was performed
under the hood, too, with ported heads, FRPP valvetrain pieces, a BBK Performance 90mm throttle body, and a BBK cold air intake.
We wont give away all of Richs secrets, but BBK also supplied the GTs headers, which feed into a full FRPP exhaust. Pro-Modular
Performance of Austin, Texas, tuned the car using SCT software.
