Capstone Proposal

My knowledge on Buddhism:

The belief of the believer is always true so many people could argue with this statement and

thats because they BELIEVE that is incorrect. Beliefs are something so powerful and something

so controversial. But growing up I never was associated with any type of religion and a part of

me was always disappointed. And thats why I have decided to do my capstone project on

Buddhism. Ive always been interested in religion/lifestyle, but why specifically Buddhism.

Buddha: Any of a series of teachers in Buddhism, of whom Gautama was the last, who bring

enlightenment and wisdom. (sometimes lowercase) Buddhism. a person who has attained

full prajna, or enlightenment; Arhat. The main objective or goal in the Buddhism culture is

enlightenment, having or showing a rational, modern, and well-informed outlook. Peace and

happiness have always been my ultimate goal and Buddhism is a great path for those specific

goals. This project will expand my own knowledge on Buddhism and will also help me expand

other peoples interests on the topic. In general, Buddhism is a way of finding peace within

oneself. It is a religion that helps us to find the happiness and contentment we seek. Buddhists

develop inner peace, kindness and wisdom through their daily practice; and then share their

experience with others bringing real benefit to this world. They try not to harm others and to

live peacefully and gently, working towards the ultimate goal of pure and lasting happiness for

all living beings.

My plan:

The proposal I have come up with is to put together a club/session for me to teach (not preach

to) people about Buddhism. In this session I would explain beliefs and practices such as

meditation and go into depth about how this isnt as much a religion as it is a way of life.

Buddhism is about realization and experience, not institutions or divine authority. This makes it

especially suited to those who consider themselves spiritual but not religious. To put it another

way: Is Buddhism the religion for people who dont like religion? Buddhism is unique among the

worlds major world religions. (Some people debate whether Buddhism is in fact a religion, but

for now lets assume it is.) Buddhism is the one world religion that has no God. It is the

nontheistic religion. To start my sessions I would have to start by getting a teacher sponsor

from the school that is willing to supervise the group. And depending on how many people

were interested I would choose a location and a date we would meet. When all of this is

planned I will have to get an approval from the principle and start the process. In this short

group, we will explore meditation techniques to reduce the stress and tension we feel in daily

life as well as all of the other details I have mentioned. Meditation helps us become familiar

with our own naturally happy and peaceful states of mind. By engaging in three guided

meditation sessions, we can gain a personal experience of deep inner peace to carry with us

into our busy lives. This group is for those new to meditation as well as those looking to refresh

their practice. I feel that meditation would be a very beneficial technique for students around

my age because teenagers have a lot of anxieties and stressful events happening in their lives

and its hard for us to find ways to cope with those things.
