Family Orientated Programming

ThisguideofsummertimeactivitieswasputtogetherbytheBrightFuturesPre-Kteachers
fortheparentsandtheirchildren.Inityouwillfindsomegreatactivitiestokeepyour
childmovingintherightdirectionbeforeheadingbacktoschoolinSeptember.Youwill
findthatmanyoftheseactivitiesareloworno-costthatyoucandowithyourchild,in
yourcommunity,throughoutthesummer.Theseactivitiesaredesignedtocontinueyour
childsdevelopmentoflanguageandliteracy,physicalandsocialskillsthroughthe
summer.

Itsimportanttorememberthatyourchildislearningwhenheorsheisplaying.Ourwish
foryouistohavefunwhiledoingtheseactivitiestogether-themostimportantthingto
rememberwhenyouaredoinganythingwithyourchildisthatifyouareattentiveand
engagedwiththem,theyaregoingtohavefunandtheyaregoingtogrow!Lastly,we
hopethatyouwilltrustthatyourchildislearningwhileyouareplaying,laughingand

DOZERS.Havethedozersknockovertheitemsandthebuilderssetthembackup.
Continuefor5minutesandthenswitch.

Notonlydothekidsbuildtheirgrossmotorskills,buttheyalsounderstand
flexiblethinkingastheyrealizethingscanbebrokenandbuiltbackupagain.

RedLightGreenLight-Havekidsstandatonelandmarkorline,andyoustandfarther
away.Teachkidsthatgreenmeansgo,redmeansstopandyellowmeansslowdown

Bananas,peanutbutter,grapes,chowmeinnoodles
Peelandsliceabanana.Jointheslicestogetherbygluingthemwithpeanut
butter.Carefullypoketwochowmeinnoodles(orbreakapretzelstickinhalfto
make2pieces)throughthetopofthegrape.Usemorepeanutbutterto

attachthehead(grape)tofrontofthebody,withantennae(chowmeinnoodles)
pointingup.

Bugsonlog
Celerystalks,apples(cutinhalvesorquarters),carrotsticks
Filllogswithspread(creamcheese,peanutbutter,cheesewhiz).Sprinkle
bugsonthespread(raisins,driedcranberries,choppednuts,unsweetened
cereal)

Marshmallowspiders
Largemarshmallows,pretzelsticksorchowmeinnoodles,andminiM&Msorraisins
Havekidspushfourpretzelsticksornoodlesintoeachsideofthemarshmallowas
thethespiderslegs.Thesewillmakethemarshmallowbodyofthespider
actuallystandontheirspiderlegs.Useanothersticktopoketwoeyeholesinthe
marshmallow;insertM&Msorraisinsintoplaceasthespiderseyes.

MuensterCheeseBeetles
CrunchychowmeinNoodles,Muenstercheese(orothersoftblockcheese)
Cutthecheeseinto2X1rectangularblocks.Gentlyinsertthreechowmein
noodlesoneachsideofthecheeseblocksforlegs.Usingtwobrokenchowmein
noodlesinsertintotheheadasantennae.
Tip:usesoftercheesesuchasgouda,havarti,MontereyjackorMozzarellaso
cheesedoesnotcrumblewhenchowmeinnoodlesareinserted.

HaveadultcutasmallrectangularholeintheupperhalfofonesideoftheJar.Makeit
about3incheswideand1-2inchestall.Cutapieceofnettingtocoverholeandtape
inplace.Decoratethetapewithstickersandorfeltpens.Addsomegrass,sticks,
leaves,flowers,capofwater.Goandcollectyourinsects/bugsandwhenyou
arefinishedwatchingandlookingatthemwiththemagnifyingglassletthemgoback
totheirownhomesagain.

Usinganeggcartonplacesoilintoholesandplantseeds(herbs),youcanlabelseeds
onthelid.Havechildwaterseedsandwatchthemgrowthroughoutthesummer.

Usehandrakes(handshovels)andhavechildrakegrass,rakeoruseshovelsinplanters
forweedsetc.Thisisgreatforlargemovementsandcrossingthemidlineactivity.

ScavengerHuntIdeas:EggCartonscavengerhuntemphasizingvocabularybuilding
Manyscavengerhuntideasarefoundfromeitherpastexperienceorbyresearching
online.Herearetwoscavengerhuntgamesthatincorporatecolorsandnumbers.

Takeaneggcartonandopenitup.Glueonpicturesofcolorsontheunderside
ofthetoplid.Thenwithyourchild,takeawalkoutdoorsandfindnatureitems
thathavethesamecolors.Placethesenatureitemsintheeggholders.For
example,youmightfindapieceofgrasstorepresentthecolorgreen;arockto
representthecolorgrey.
Takeaneggcartonandopenitup.Glueonpicturesofnatureitemsonthe
undersideofthetoplid.Addnumberstothenatureitems.Forexample,you
mighthave3roundrocks,5greenleaves,2smallsticks,etc.Thenwithyour
