Day 1 : Water and Energy-Strategies Towards Sustainability

Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry as event partner for an exclusive workshop
with IL&FS, Washington University in St. Louis and Environmental Management Centre on
December 6 and 7 at Hotel Sofitel in Bandra, Mumbai. The workshop brought together
business leaders to discuss sustainability strategies in the perspective of Energy-Water
nexus while addressing the energy and water efficiency related issues. The participants
represented a wide spectrum of industry including the IL&FS, Infosys, Pall India, Dar Group,
CH2MHill, Jain Irrigation systems, Larsen & Toubro and others. The workshop revolved
around realities of implementation and sharing of experiences by the speakers and the
participating individuals.

The agenda for the course was to discuss Global scenarios (Water and Energy) and
explore the interconnections that exist between them. First speaker from Washington
University in St. Louis, (Dr. Pratim Biswas) started the first session with the discussion on
Global Energy Scenario. Interesting calculations were made to evaluate the needs of
energy in the coming future which suggested that roughly 1 power plant of 1GW capacity
need to be installed daily over the next 40 years. Speaker then discussed some empirical
methodologies to measure Human Development Index which are then compared for
different countries in terms of primary energy consumption. Correlations were discussed
between the energy demand and human development indices. Interesting versions of
looking at the energy consumption (CO2 emissions) were discussed which clearly showed
how complicated the issue of global energy scenario is making it more difficult to come up
with a mutually agreed consensus on climate change mitigation.

Moving on, vicious cycle of Energy and Water was discussed clarifying how Water is used
by the energy sector for energy production which in turn is again consumed for making
water available. The next topic covered during the session was on different Advanced Coal
Technologies and challenges to enhance Solar Energy Utilization. Finally focus was given
on different Bioenergy aspects that would affect the Water availability and its usage.
Session concluded with agreement that Water issue will be very important in the near future
and that there will be no choice but to tackle the fossil fuel problem in a Carbon Constrained
World.

Speaker for the next session (Dr. Prasad Modak, Executive president of Environmental
Management Centre) then focused on the water usages for different sectors. Industrial
sector water usages showed that thermal power plants were the main culprits as far as
water consumption was considered. The figures of industrial water productivity (US $ / m3 of
water) shows how surprisingly inefficient the Indian water industry is when it comes to water
utilization. Stress was given upon how water and energy issues are inextricably linked as
Water is needed for Energy generation which in turn is needed for Water generation.
Interesting facts were presented that justify the need of addressing the water and energy
challenges simultaneously. Several case studies and examples focusing on 3Rs (Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle) were discussed. Remediation technologies (especially newer ones)
serving the industrial as well as drinking water purposes were discussed followed by
discussion on Policy, Technology and Finance. Focus was then given on novel Business
models that would be very important to address difficulties in water and energy sector faced
by the world. Several interesting case studies were discussed which provided glimpses on
how to translate the difficulties into opportunities.

The next speaker from Washington University in St. Louis (Mr. Ray Erhard) discussed
strategies for water and energy sustainability introducing concepts on LEED where
buildings are designed to reduce energy and resources, Six Sigma to improve quality and
reduce defects & Lean manufacturing to reduce resources in manufacturing. Some
interesting case studies were discussed for each individual strategy before finally going
through continuous energy improvement program and some of its examples.

During the last session of the day, speaker Dr. Prasad Modak talked about how to
implement Energy and Environment Management programs while looking at different
Energy and Environment Management Systems. Emphasis was given to explain the
complexities involved in managing resources such as energy and water. Energy
management system which is parallel to environmental management system was then
described and explained using various examples. Auditing as a tool and its usefulness was
also pointed out. Finally, Life Cycle Approach analysis was discussed using various
interesting examples and case studies.

Day 2 : Addressing Water and Energy Efficiency

The second day of the workshop began with a session on Common Energy and Water
Practices in Industry Risks and Opportunities by speaker from Washington University in
St. Louis (Mr. John Murphy). Mr. John mentioned a startling fact about the cost of operation
and the contributions of utility bills for the same which suggest that energy and water are
one of the significant aspects of the cost component too. Speaker than presented some
numbers of energy consumption for individual components in typical industries (pumping,

compressed air, fan systems etc.) with the possibility of tremendous savings in terms of
energy and in turn money for the industries.

A case study of Ahmedabad, India Municipal Corporation was presented with the emphasis
on the costs associated with electricity used for pumping of water. The implementation of
energy saving measures like increased water storage to allow offpeak pumping,
replacement of some steel pipes with plastic pipes to reduce friction losses, replacement of
oversized transformers, loss reduction from water pumps etc. was discussed which resulted
in enormous amounts of savings within forst two years of program. Speaker also explained
the concept of pinch analysis followed by some examples/case studies indicating the
tremendous potential of this kind of approach in achieving higher efficiencies. Significant
discussion then focused on reuse of wastewater. Different barriers in implementing reuse
were discussed along with advantages for the same. Session finally concluded with some
case studies showing the benefits offered by different options earlier on.

Next session revolved around discussing energy efficiency of systems through lighting,
heating and cooling, compressed air and motors. Each system was discussed in detail and
systematically with the help of various case studies showing the gains received from each
one of them respectively in terms of payback period. Special emphasis was given on
importance of operation and maintenance. The next round of discussion solely on thermal
energy and the importance of vast opportunities that lie in the waste heat generated during
various processes in the industry. Keeping this in mind, waste heat recovery potential and
the heat recovery systems were discussed in detail. The case studies were then used to
show the benefits and the results were also compared in terms of COP (a term called
Coefficient of performance). Finally different advanced electric based heating technologies
were discussed with their advantages and disadvantages. Some case studies were
mentioned to illustrate the benefits of using heat recovery systems in terms of improved
efficiency, reduced energy usage and money savings.

Last session of the workshop focused on water efficiency which covered wide range of
topics including potential of reuse, issues, barriers, impediments, industrial approaches,
different technologies and the use of membranes in water reuse. A classic case study of a
beverage manufacturers approach to water conservation was discussed which clearly
illustrated how systematic evaluation can help in water and energy savings. Specific case
studies on water and wastewater treatment retrofits clearly show the huge savings that are
possible by adopting appropriate methodologies. Finally a case study of recent project on
municipal wastewater recycling facility was discussed which shows that treated municipal
wastewater can be reused for industrial and power plant make-up water effectively with the
help of approaches like pinch analysis and that technologies need to be designed in a
manner to meet local needs.
