Inthenameofthehighest,almightyCreator,I,KingSolomon,holdtotheinterpretation
ofthenameof(God)Semiphoras,inotherwords,theFirstandtheGreatest,theoldestand
hiddenmysteryofgreatpowerandvirtue,toobtainallthatwhichisaskedofGod,forGod
mustbeworshippedinspiritandintruth,whichconsistsnotinmanyandvainwords,because
eachwordandnameofGodisselfexistent,andthereforethenameandprayermustagree,and
nostrangenamemustbeusedunnecessarilyifanythingfearfulorwonderfulisintendedtobe
accomplished,inorderthatthedivinequalitymaypourintooursoulandspiritHisgraceand
giftsthatistheconsciousnessofGodinHisnamethroughwhichhecomesnearandabides
withthosewhoknowHisname.Therefore,thisnamemustbeheldinthehighesthonorand
shouldbehiddenfromallfrivolousandunworthypersons,sinceGodsayshimselfinExodus:
OutofallplaceswillIcomeuntotheeandblessthee,becausethourememberestmyname.
Therefore, have the Hebrew Mecubals seventytwo names for God, and named and wrote
Schemhamphora,thenameofseventytwoletters.

First,itmustbeknownthatthenamesofGodcannotbetaughtandunderstoodexcept
onlyintheHebrewlanguage,neithercanwepronouncetheminanyotherdialect,astheywere
revealedtousthroughthegraceofGod.Fortheyarethesacramentandemanationofdivine
omnipotence,notofman,norofangels,buttheyareinstitutedandconsecratedthroughthe
(generent)ofGod,toinstilldivineharmonyinacertainmanneraccordingtothecharactersof
hisimmovablenumberandfigure,andofwhichthosethatareappointedovertheheavensare
afraid.TheangelsandallcreatureshonorthemandusethemtopraisetheirCreator,andto
blessHimwiththegreatestreverenceinHisdivineworks,andwhosoeverwillapplythem
properlywithfearandtremblingandwithprayer,willbepowerfullyenlightenedbythespirit
ofGodwillbejoinedwithadivineunitywillbemightyaccordingtothewillofGod
thathecanperformsupernaturalthingsthathecancommandangelsanddevilsthathe
canbindandunbindthethingsoftheelements,overwhichhemayelevatehimselfthroughthe
powerofGod.Therefore,he,whohaspurifiedandimprovedhisunderstandingandmorals,and
who,throughfaith,haspurifiedhisears,sothathemaywithoutspuriousalterationscallupon
thedivinenameofGod,willbecomeahouseandadwellingplaceofGod,andwillbea
partakerofdivineinfluences,etc.,etc.

Ontheotherhand,theorderofGodshouldbeknown,thatGodmakesuseofotherwords
amongangelsandalsoothersamongmen,butthetruenameofGodisknownneithertomen
nortoangels,forHehasreserveditandwillnotrevealituntilHisorderandexhibitionare
fulfilledandperfected.Afterthattheangelswillhavetheirowntonguesandspeech,about
whichweneednotconcernourselves,becauseitisnotnecessaryforustoexaminethem.
In the third place, all the names of God are taken by us from His works, as indicating a
communication with God, or are extracted out of the divine scriptures through Kabbalistic
calculation,Notaricon,andGematria.5(OP3.11: "many names of God and the Angels are extracted out of the
holy Scriptures by the Cabalisticall calculation, Notarian and Gimetrian [Gematria] arts" EE: "... art of Cabalisticam,
Calculatoriam, Notariacam, and Geometriam." Notaricon extracts letters from a passage to form new words.
Gematria considers meanings based on numerical values.)

 ThebeginningofthenameandwordSemiphoras,whichGodtheCreator,Jehovahgave
in Paradise, embraces three Hebrew letters, Jehovah the inscrutable Creator of the world,
almightyProvidence,andallpowerfulstrongDeity.

After this there are four parts of the earth which are the most subtle light of the spiritual world. Likewise
four [triplicities of] hierarchies: 1) Seraphim, Cherubim, [and Thrones]; 2) Dominations, Powers, and
Virtues; 3) [Principalities,] Archangels, and Angels; 4) Spirits and souls of persons which come before
God. These parts of the world has also four angels that stand upon the four corners of heaven; they are
Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel; four angels stand for the elements, namely, Seraph, Cherub, Tharsis,
Ariel; four highly enlightened men full of the light of God. 6( Hierarchus, Cherubim et Seraphim, Potestates et
Virtutes, Archangelos et Angelos, Spiritus et Animus Hominum, which come before God." The triplicity of holy
persons consists of innocents, martyrs, and confessors. The four enlightened men are presumably Mark, John,
Matthew, and Luke listed by Agrippa in his Table of Four.)

For the other light or part of the world is the heaven of all the stars; has four triplicities of the twelve
signs, under which the Sun revolves yearly, making the change of seasons, the Spring, Summer, Fall, and
Winter of birth and corruption, and changes the four elements. 7 (Elements: Air, Fire, Earth, and Water. S: "...

In the third part of the work are the elements and everything that is subordinate to them, in which is the
small world, man. He again has four elements within him. Anima is in the head, per nervos; Spiritus is in
the heart, and operates through the arteries; Corpus is the whole body with the veins; Genius, a spark of
fire, is in the kidneys, and governs birth. He has four spiritual and strong working faculties, as facultates
actiones, or spiritus, as his Animal, Vital, Natural, and Generative. The soul has inward senses, as sensum
communem; in which faith takes hold as (fides) and other senses Intellectus in the brain.8 (This is very
confused in S and EE. The four elements of man are: The Mind, The Spirit, The Soul, and The Body. The four powers
of the soul are: Intellect, Reason, Phantasy, and Sense. The four judiciary powers are: Faith, Science, Opinion, and
Experience.)

and accomplishes all things.

connectthesoulwiththebody.AppetitusSensitivus;thenaturalspiritualactionandpowerliesin
theliverandarteries,andeffectmotionandattraction,supportandsubsistence;theproperspirit

complexions or temperaments, warm, wet, [cold,] dry; attraction is produced by warmth,

devils.Thefourth,becausehespokewiththecreaturesofthefourelements,thebirds,the
fishes,theanimals,andthecreepingthings oftheearth.Thefifth,becausehespokewith
inanimateobjects,asherbs,seeds,trees,andallvegetation.Thesixth,becausehespokewith
thewinds.Theseventh,becausehespokewiththeSun,Moon,andstars.Bythepowerofthe
sevenSemiphorashecouldcreateanddestroyallhedesired.

ThefirstSemiphoraswasacknowledgedbyAdam,sinceGodcreatedhimandplacedhim
inParadise,wherehewasallowedtoremainonlysevenhours.ThenameisJove,whichname
mustbepronouncedonlyinthegreatestneed,andthenonlywiththemostdevoutfeelings

Hagallalim. It continues from morning until night. From these the Heathens divided the
angelsintothirtythreeorders.Thefirstgreatlight,communicateslight,lifeandstationoutof
thefirstcourse,andopposesothersintheSphaeraZodiaci,causessummerandwinter,the
springofallthethingsoftheelements:Hebrew Masloth,goesfromeveningtomorning
accordingtothetwelvesignsoftheheavens.

ButevenifallthingshavetheirexistencefromGod,thegreatFirstCause,weshould
notdespiseothercauses,accordingtochangesintime,intheyear,inthemonth,dayand
hour,neithershouldweregardthesecausesexclusively,andforgetGod,forinthismanner
heathenidolatrywasinstituted.ForthisreasonGoddoesnotregardtime,becauseitrobshim
ofhishonor.Fortheheathensexperiencedthattheheavenlyspiritswerenotunitedwiththeir
bodies,asoursoulsareunitedwithourbodies,buttheycouldrejoiceinthepresenceofGod,
andpreparetheirbodieswithoutmuchlabortoworkwiththelowercreaturesofGod.They
regardedthecelestialspiritsasgods,andconferreddivinehonorsuponthem.Veryoftenthe
JewsturnedawayfromGodandworshippedthehostofheaven,andthereforethewrathof
Godwaskindledagainstthem.Butonaccountoftheorderofallthings,Godhassetthem

beforeusashisinstruments,andwhichwe,onaccountoftheirhonorableoffice,areto
regardasthenoblestcreationofGod,andthatweshouldhonorthem,nexttoGod,according
totheirstation,notasgodsbutascreatures,whichhehasappointedastwelveprincesover
thetwelvegatesofheaven,thattheymayadmitwhattheyreceivedfromthedivinename,
transposedtwelvetimes.

Ezekielwrites:"ThelawsofthetwelvetribesofIsraelwerethuswritten,andGod
Tetragrammaton ruledoverthem.ThusitiswritteninRevelations,thatthestonesinour
heavenlycityareplantedintheground,orthattheChurchofChristisrepresentedbythe
twelvenamesoftheApostles,includingtwelveangelsandofthemthenameofJesus,who
receivedallthepoweroftheFather,sothattheheavenswillreceivewhattheangelsgiveto
themaccordingtothewillofGod.IfthenanIntelligentiaisascribedtoeachheaven,each
staranddepartmentofheavenmusthaveadistinctandseparatepowerandinfluenceand,
therefore,mustalsohaveadistinct Intelligentiam.Therefore,therearetwelveprincesof
angels,whorepresentthetwelvesignsoftheZodiac,andthirtysix,whorepresentsomany
Decuriis, and seventytwo angels, who represent so many Quinariis of heaven, of the
seventytwonationsandlanguagesofman.Likewisesevenangelsofthehostsfortheseven
heavensofthesevenplanets,toruletheworld,etc.Also,fourangelswhorepresentthe
TriplicitatibusofthetwelvesignsoftheZodiacandthefourelements.

Allofthesehavetheirnamesandsignswhichthephilosophersusedintheirworks,
signs,images,clothes,mirrors,rings,cards,waxfigures,asiftheyhadasunworkbefore
them,andtheycalledthemthenamesoftheSunandhisangels,andlikewiseofothers,etc.

Inthethirdplace,theydesignatedthelowestangelsasservants.Thesetheydistributed
overtheworld,andnamedthemafterthesevenplanets,andthesehavetheirspecialcourse
afterthefourelementsandafterthefourpartsoftheairandearthofthedaytimeseveral
Diurnos, several Nocturnos, several Meridianos,81 not that they are subordinate to the
influenceofthestarsasthebodywhichtheyrepresent,butthattheyaremorenearlyrelated
tothestarbodykindtimethanothers,otherwisetheymightbeeverywhere,aseachhuman
beinghasthreeangels,forGodhasordainedthateachhumanbeingshallhavehisgoodangel
asaprotector,whoalsostrengthensthespiritandurgesandexhortsustowhatisgoodand
commendable,thatwemayflyfromwhatisfatimalignitatem.82Andsoeverymanhasalso
anevilspirit,whocontrolsthedesiresofthefleshandawakensthelustsoftheheart;between
thesetwoangelsthereisaconstantstruggleforsupremacy,andtowhichevermangivesthe
preference,hewillreceivethevictory;andiftheevilangeltriumphs,thenmanbecomeshis
servant;shouldthegoodangelprovethestronger,thenhewillcleansethesoulandsaveman
fromdestruction.Theangelandhisimpulsescomefromthestars.Inthethirdplacearethe
Genii of man who govern birth, and are joined to each perfection in man. These are
recognizedfromthestarwhichistheLordofthebirths.TheChaldeansseekthisGeniumin
theSunandMoon.AstronomerswouldhavethegoodGeniumoutoftheeleventhhouse,
which,onthisaccount,theycall bonumGenium.Theeviloneoutofthesixthhouse.But
eachonewilllearntoknowhimthroughnaturalinclination,towhicheveryonewasinclined
fromhisyouth.Onthisaccountheiscalledthebirthangel,whoissentintotheworldby
God.OfthisthePsalmistsays:"Thouhastmadethespiritofmanasaflameoffire."For

 experienceteachesus,thattheflameoffireandthespiritofbirthmaybeseparatedwithout
injurytoman,thatwecanlearnhiddenthingsfromhimifheisgoodandtrue. 83Butheis
powerless over the members of birth. If, however, a virgin or a companion becomes
marriageable,hemaybeliberatedfromtheglass,andourtimeoflifewillbeextended.

Moreover,Godhasendowedmanwithadivinecharacter,throughthenumberPhahadthe
lefthandswordofGod,throughwhichmanbecomesacursetoallcreatures.Andthenagainhe
hasanothercharacterinthenumberofGod, Hesed therightandscepterofGod,through
whichhefindsfavorinthesightofGodandallhiscreatures. 84Anevilconscienceisthejudge
ofmen,butagoodconscienceishishappiness.Therefore,throughtheotherdivinenumbers,
and through the angels and stars a man becomes impressed with signs and characters of
conscience,whichcauseshimtobehappyatonetimeandunhappyatanother.

On this account, if a man has committed murder, theft, orany other act which his
consciencecondemns,hecanbebroughttoaconfessionofhisguiltthroughpersistentcalling
uponthenameofGod,forhisconsciencewillthengivehimnorestuntilhereturnswhathe
hasstolen,oruntilhehassufferedthepunishmentduetohiscrime.Therefore,inthenameof
theFather,Son,andHolySpirit,takethreesmallpiecesofwoodfromthedoorsilloverwhich
thethiefpassedinleavingtheplacewherehecommittedthetheft,placethemwithinawagon
wheel,andthenthroughthehubofthewheelsaythefollowingwords:"Ipraythee,thouHoly
Trinity,thatthoumayestcauseA,whostolefrommeB,a,C,tohavenorestorpeaceuntilhe
againrestoresmethatwhichhehasstolen."Turnthewheelroundthreetimesandreplaceit
againonthewagon.Nevertheless,allpiousChristians,whohaveanyregardfortheirfuture
happiness,shouldcarefullyavoidallsuperstitiousmattersandshouldbewareofusingtheholy
nameofGodunworthily,holdingitinthegreatestreverencelesttheybringuponthemselves
eternalpunishment.Ifamanknowshimselfandrealizesthatheiscreatedintheimageand
likenessofGod,hewillacknowledgeGodtheCreatorbeforeallthings,andafterwardthe
worldandallitscreatures.Fromthehighspirits,angels,andtheheavens,hehashisportion,
andfromtheelements,animals,vegetation,andstones,hehaswithinhimselfeverythingthat
hedesirestoobtain.

Ifamanknowshowtoappropriatetheparticularplace,time,order,bulk,proportion,
andmentalorganizationofanyone,hecanattractanddrawthem,justasamagnetattracts
iron:buthemustfirstbeprepared,justasthemagnetmustbefashionedbythefileand
chargedwithelectricity.Tothisendthesoulmustfirstbepurified,anddedicatedtoGod
throughfaith;apureheartandconstantjoyinthespiritarerequisites.Hemustpossessloveto
Godandhisfellowman,andthenhemayarriveataperfectstateandbecomelikeuntothe
SonofGod.HewillbecomeunitedwithGod,andwilloncemorebelikehim.Itisnotgiven
toangelsnortoanycreaturetounitewithGod,butonlytoman,andhemaybecomehisson;
andwhenthistakesplace,sothatheovercomeshimself,heovercomesandcandrawtohim
allothercreaturesandcommandtheirobedience.

Butourspirit,word,andact,havenopowerinmagicandknowledge,iftheyarenot
everywherestrengthenedbythewordofGod,whichweshouldhearoften.Wemustprayto
Godwithoutceasing,liveasober,temperate,andunstainedlife;wemustliveinacontinual
stateofrepentance,givealmsandhelpthepoor,forChristhasnotsaidinvain:"Makeunto

 you friends with the unrighteous Mammon, so that he will receive you into eternal
habitations,"thatis,applyyourwealthandabundancetothesupportofthepoor,thatthey
mayreceivetheirdailybreadfromyouandbesatisfied.Christsays:"Whatyehavedoneunto
theleastofmine,thathaveyealsodoneuntome."Thesearethefriendsthatwillleadustoa
divineabodeinheaven,whereweshallreceiveathousandfoldandlifeeternal.Ontheother
handthereareotherswhowillberejected.ForChristalsosays:"Iwashungryandthirstyand
yegavemenomeatanddrink,departfrommeyeworkersofiniquity,intoouterdarkness."

Therefore,byfasting,praying,givingalms,preparingthesoulsofthebelievingforthe
temple,wemaybecomecoheirsofheavenlygifts,whichtheMostHighwillconferuponus
inthislifeifweknowhowtousethemproperly.

SinceallthingshavetheirlifeandbeingfromGod,sothepropernameofeverything
wastakenfromthebeingofthatthing,andallthingsderiveaninfluencefromtheCreatorif
theyhavebeenappropriatelynamed,forasGodbringsforthallthingsthroughtheinfluence
ofheavenandtheoperationoftheplanets,evensothenamesofallthingshavebeengivenin
accordancewithsomequalityofthethingnamedbyhimwhocountsthestars.AndthusGod
led all creatures to Adam in orderto have them named, and their names indicated some
peculiarqualityorpartpossessedbyeach.Therefore,eachnamethathasameaning,showsby
comparisonwiththeheavenlyinfluenceaninherentqualificationoftheobject,althoughitis
frequentlychanged.When,however,bothmeaningsofthenameharmonize,thenthewill
powerandnaturalpowerbecomeidentical.Moreover,thecelestialofficetowhichmanis
ordainedbyGod,endowshimwithpowertoconferlife,andtellshimwhattoencourage,
whattoelevate,whattosuppressinhiscauseSphaera,andtoperformwonderfulworkswith
fulldevotiontowardGod,etc.

What Man Receives from the Order of Angels.

Manbecomesstrengthenedwithwonderfulpowerthroughtheorderofangels,sothathe
declaresthedivinewill.

FromtheSeraphim,thatweclingwithferventlove.

FromtheCherubim,enlightenmentofthemind,power,andwisdomovertheexalted
figuresandimages,throughwhichwecangazeupondivinethings,etc.

FromtheThrones,aknowledgeofhowwearemadeandconstituted,thatwemay
directourthoughtsuponeternalthings.

FromDominations,assistancetobringintosubjectionourdailyenemies,whomwe
carrywithusconstantly,andenablingustoattainsalvation.

FromPowers,protectionagainsthumanenemiesoflife.

FromVirtues,Godinfusesstrengthintous,enablingustocontendagainsttheenemies

FromPrincipalities,thatallthingsbecomesubjecttoman,thathemaygraspallpower,
anddrawuntohimselfallsecretandsupernaturalknowledge.

overtheanimalsofthefield,overthefishesofthesea,andoverthebirdsoftheair.

InAries,thevegetablesofearthobtainnewvigor,thetreessap,andfemalesbecome
betteradaptedtopropagatethehumanspecies.Inthissignthefecundityofallcreaturesis
limitedandregulated.IthasSundayforitspeculiartimeandend.

InTaurus,alltransactionsandenterprisesareprosperedandfostered,sothatthey
maygoforwardaccordingtothewillofGod,buttothisendconstantprayersarenecessary,
andparticularlyonSunday.

InGemini,theangelshavepoweroverbodilychangesandtravelfromoneplaceto
anotherovertheheavensandthroughthecourseofthestarshavepoweroverthemotion
ofthewatersinriversandinthesea,causelovebetweenbrethren,friends,andneighbors,
andgivewarningagainstdangers,persons,andobjects.

InScorpio,theangelsruleoverlegaciesandriches,overtreasureandtreasure
seekersarecalculatedbynaturetoconferpower,theartofspeaking,andtoenlightenthe
mindinholythings,inlikemannerasdidtheapostlesintheirunceasingprayerstoGodat
Pentecost.

InLeo,theangelshavepowertomoveeverylivingthing,tomultiplytheirspecies,to
watch,andincertainmannerstojudge.AndthroughthegiftofGodtheyconferPhysicam,
Medicinam,andAlchymiam.

InVirgo,thespiritshavepowertosubvertkingdoms,toregulateallconditions,to
discriminatebetweenmasterandservant,tocommandevilspirits,toconferperpetual
health,andgivetomanMusicum,Logicam,andEthicam.

InLibra,theangelsderivefromGodgreatpower,inasmuchastheSunandMoon
standunderthissign.Theirpowercontrolsthefriendshipandenmityofallcreatures.

Theyhavepoweroverdanger,warfare,overquarrels,andslanderleadarmiesin

InScorpio,theangelshavepoweroversufferingandterror,overwhichmanmakes

countrytoanother,regulatethechangesoftheelementsandthepropagationofanimals.

InCapricorn,theangelsgivehighworldlyhonors,worthiness,andvirtue,suchas
AdamenjoyedinParadiseinhisinnocence.Theyalsoenlightentheunderstandingand
conferhumanreason.

IntheAquarius,angelskeepmaningoodhealth,andteachhimwhatisinjuriousto
him,makehimcontented,andteachhimthroughthecommandofGodthemysteriesof
heavenandofnature.

InPisces,theangelscompeltheevilspiritstobecomesubjecttoman,protectthe
pious,sothatthegreatenemycannotharmhim.

Itisuniversallyknownandacknowledged,thatwearenamedafterthemostholyname
oftheRuleroftheWorld,andthatwereceivetheholyDecalogueorthewrittenlawfrom
him.ItisfurtherwellknownthatinadditiontothelawswhichhegavetoMosesengraved
uponstone,healsogavetohimcertainverballaws,bywhich,throughhisprotractedstay
uponthemountainSinai,wherealldoctrines,explanationsofmysteries,holynamesofGod

equalinholinessandworthiness,willnotbecalledinquestion.Ourwisemendeclare,"He
whowilldailyliveclosertoGod,whodeservestounitehissoulwithHim,andwhoiswilling
toliveintheclosestcommunionwithhim,shouldoftenpraythePsalmswithfervorand
devotion.Happythemanwhodoesthisdailyandhourly,forhisrewardwillbegreat."The
Psalmsareformedanddividedintofivebooks,justliketheThora.Wecan,therefore,
implicitlytrustinthedoctrinesoftheenlightenedKabbalists,whentheyassertthatthe
AlmightyaccordedequaltalentsandpowerstothePsalmsashedidtotheThora,andthatin
themmanynamesoftheMostHighMajestyofGodandhisangels,besides,manymysteries,
arehidden.

Yes,dearreader,youmustnotdoubt.Throughapiouslifeandbyarationaluseofthe
PsalmsyoumayobtainthegraceofGod,thefavorofprincesandmagistratesandtheloveof
yourfellowmen.Youwillbeenabledtoprotectyourselffromdanger,toescapesuffering,
andtopromoteyourownwelfare.

Thatthisisalltrue,thecontentsoftheprayer,withwhichweendeachPsalm,and
whichweareindutyboundtopray,willamplydemonstrate.Butthecorrectnessofitisalso
establishedbytheteachingsoftheTalmudandoftheoldwisemen,whoassureus,thatmany
ofourfamousforefathersavailedthemselvesofapparentlysupernaturalmeansfromtimeto

yetfreetoall,butfoundonlyinthelibrariesandcabinetsofthegreat,althoughnotgenerally
known,shouldatleast,insomedegree,bebroughttolight.

Sincehowever,Icannotgainmyobjectinanyotherwaythanbygivingthesepagesto
theworldinaprintedform,andsincetheywillunavoidablyfallintouncleanhands,Ifeel
myselfconstrained,inordertopreventanunworthyuseofthem,toextendthispreface,which

1. If you are willing to avail yourself of the means indicated, I warn you not to attempt it in a case
of extreme necessity, and when there is no other help at hand.

and ever blessed God, upon whom you may perhaps have hitherto called under, an unknown

3. The ordained Psalm, for this or the other undertaking, besides the appropriate prayer, you

Admonition of the Translator.

BeforeIproceedfurtherwiththetranslationofthePsalms,itisnecessarytoinsertin
thisplaceanadmonition,whichtheauthor,whowroteonlyforhisownnation,deemed
unnecessary,andwhich,nevertheless,shouldbeaddressedtoeveryone.

"Eachhumanbeing,"saysthecelebratedKabbalist,RabbiIsaacLorija,2"exceptonly
theignorantidolator,canbyapiousandvirtuouslifeenterintotheconsecratedtempleof
thetrueKabbalah,andcanavailhimselfofitsbenefitswithoutbeingabletospeakor

of the forty-one holy and important words and names of this Psalm, with which we should especially

Remarks by the Translator.

The extraordinary powers ascribed to the 91st Psalm may all be right and proper enough, but it
is to be regretted that the reader cannot avail himself of its benefits, especially in the last experiment,
because all the recorded holy names consist of the first letter of all the words of the 91st Psalm, and
likewise of the 23rd and 28th verses of Exodus, chapter xii., a passage which has already been quoted.
It is, therefore, impossible to pronounce this name properly, neither can it be translated into English
or into any other language. And how shall we then memorize the first letters of each word of the
Psalm together with the points or vowels belonging to them? If any one, notwithstanding the
difficulties attending the use of this Psalm, should desire to avail himself of its virtues, then he must
undertake the burdensome task of learning the Hebrew language, or he must write it, and wear it
upon his heart as an amulet.
