Data for 2009 were compiled by the Council's General Secretariat. Data for 2010, 2011 and 2012 were compiled by the Commission (DG HOME) in accordance with Article 46 of the Visa Code
(Regulation 810/2009). Full and detailed data for these three years are available at DG HOME's website: http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/home-affairs/what-we-do/policies/borders-and-visas/visa-
policy/index_en.htm
Schengen States: Austria (AT), Belgium (BE), Switzerland (CH), Czech Republic (CZ), Germany (DE), Denmark (DK), Estonia (EE), Greece (EL), Spain (ES), Finland (FI), France (FR), Hungary (HU),
Iceland (IS), Italy (IT), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Latvia (LV), Malta (MT), the Netherlands (NL), Norway (NO), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Sweden (SE), Slovenia (SI), Slovakia (SK).
Liechtenstein (LI) is also a Schengen State but it does not deliver visas.
Visa data are collected on the basis of the place where the application is made, and not on the basis of the citizenship of the visa applicant. Thus, for instance, data on applications made in
Russia do not necessarily concern only Russian nationals. A non-Russian legally residing in Moscow who needs a Schengen visa will apply for a Schengen visa in Moscow, not in his/her country
of origin, and his/her application will be counted under the 'Russia' data.
This visa entitles the holder to transit through the international transit area of airports situated on the territory of a Member State without actually entering the territory of that Member
State, during a stop-over or transfer between two stages of an international flight.
"A" visas can be issued for a single airport transit or for multiple airport transits (Multiple A).
a) Uniform short stay visas ('C visas') entitle the holder to stay in the territories of all Member States for a period of maximum 90 days/180 days. Such visas may be issued for the
purpose of a single entry or multiple entries ("MEVs").
b) A short stay visa with limited territorial validity ("LTV") entitles the holder in principle to stay only in the Member State(s) for which the visa is valid. Exceptionally, an LTV may be
valid for the territory of several Member States. A LTV visa may be issued in cases where the traveller does not fulfil all the entry conditions, when at least one Member State does
not recognise the travel document on which the visa will be affixed or when, for reasons of urgency, a visa is issued without carrying out, when applicable, the prior consultation.

Main figures
The number of applications for uniform short stay C Schengen visas ('C visas') increases from year to year. In 2009, 10,216,091 C visas were applied for. In 2010,
the number was 11,812,352, an increase of 15.6% from the previous year. In 2011, 13,483,497 C visa applications were recorded, an increase of 14.1% from the
previous year. And in 2012, 15,116,973 applications were lodged, an increase of 12.1% from the previous year. The increase between 2009 and 2012 was 48%.
In 2012, the 5 countries where most C visa applications were lodged were Russia (6 million, 40% of total), Ukraine (1.3 million, 9%), China (1.25 million, 8%),
Belarus (0.7 million, 5%) and Turkey (0.67 million, 4%).
Between 2009 and 2012 visa applications increased by 108% in China, 87% in Russia, 89% in Belarus and 86% in Saudi Arabia. Visa applications lodged in the top-
10 countries represented 66.3% of all applications lodged worldwide in 2009. The percentage increased to 77.5% in 2012.
Of the 10 Schengen States' consulates receiving most C visa applications in 2012, 7 are in Russia, and 1 in Ukraine, China and Belarus each. These 10 consulates
received 31% of all Schengen visa applications.
On average, 4.8% of C visa applications were refused in 2012 (down from 5.5% in 2011). There are, however, important differences between Member States
(Belgium refuses 16% of applications, while Lithuania and Latvia refuse around 1%) and between third countries (while in Algeria 27% and in Iran 18% of
applications are refused, in Russia, Belarus and South Africa the refusal rate is below 1%).
In 2012 41.6% of all short stay visas issued were multiple entry C visas (MEVs) in. The percentage of MEVs was significant in Saudi Arabia (68%), the UAE (53%),
and Russia (49%), whereas it was relatively lower in China (13%) and Thailand (16%). These differences are often explained by local circumstances, differences in
travel purposes and frequency of trips.
In 2012, the Schengen states registering most C visa applications were France (2.3 million worldwide), Germany (1.85 million), Spain (1.8 million), Italy (1.7
million) and Finland (1.4 million, mainly in Russia). These 5 Member States received 60% of all C visa applications.
More than 80% of the C visas issued by Finland and Slovenia were MEVs. The share of MEVs in the total number of C visas issued by Germany, Spain, the Czech
Republic and Iceland was less than 20%.
138,144 C visas were issued at border crossing points in 2012. The BCPs were most visas were issued were the seaports of Rotterdam, Barcelona and Antwerp.
By the end of 2013, about 25% of all visa applications worldwide will be made in countries where the VIS has been rolled-out.
