THE AWESOME LITERATURE MAPPING AND GAP ANALYSIS

FOR A RERESEARCH WORK

I have heard so many undergraduates complaining and asking for a

guide on how to form a good literature map and run a gap analysis
for an undergraduate project.

Well I am very much pleased to bring to your knowledge dear

researchers that literature mapping and gap analysis is not too
much a task for you to accomplish in no time.

Lets take for instance an undergraduate project student, goes

online to maybe select some free undergraduate project topics and
research materials to aid his research on a particular topic; now
getting to the chapter two of his or her research work, it was
demanded by his or her supervisor to add a literature map and run
a gap analysis for his or her research.

There is absolutely no need to panic!

I shall teach you what gap analysis and literature mapping are all
about; and by the end of this article and undergraduate or post
graduate project student will be able to carry out his or her
research with confidence.

Let us begin by defining literature map

Literature map:

According to the University of the West of England, it was stated

that a literature map is one that maps literature or literary concepts
based on the connections and associations. Much like other maps,
a literature map is a helpful method of visualization

Secondly let us pick a research project topic in education:

Impact of information and communication technology (ICT) in
teaching and learning of integrated science in junior secondary
school (a case study of Makurdi local government in Benue
state)

If look at the topic above, we can see the variables (information,

communication, technology, learning, integrated science) which
must be focused on. We shall define the various concepts that are
in line with the project topic above.

For the literature map for the above topic see figure 1 below:

For the gap analysis; in research work gap could simply means the
area of a particular research that was not covered by the literature.
For instance if we consider the above topic; on the Impact of
information and communication technology (ICT) in teaching
and learning of integrated science in junior secondary school (a
case study of Makurdi local government in Benue state)

At the end of the research work, we shall point out all the areas
that the research could not cover, from chapter one to chapter
three. See figure 2 below for the gap analysis.
