Ingls Instrumental III. Septiembre 2014.
Este examen escrito supone el 80% de la calificacin total de la asignatura para los estudiantes que
hayan optado por la evaluacin continua, y el 100% para los que no. Consta de 4 partes
(vocabulario, pronunciacin, traduccin y lectura/resumen). Es necesario alcanzar al menos el 50%
de cada una de las partes para superarlo. Por tanto, no se deben dejar preguntas sin contestar.
1A. Give a Spanish word or, if necessary, a very short phrase which means the same or nearly
the same as each of the English words below (10 points):
a) tumble - caerse
b) bunch - grupo
c) layer - capa
d) riot - provocar disturbios
e) raid - asaltar
f) chop - picar
g) revenue - ingresos

Comentarios
ii. No es necesario dar la misma traduccin que aparece en el libro English Skills for
Indepenedent Learners; cualquier traduccin avalada por los diccionarios se da por
buena.
iii. Saber una palabra supone saber cmo se escribe correctamente; los errores de
ortografa son errores.
iv. En las asignaturas Ingls Instrumental III, IV, V y VI se estudian las 6500 palabras ms
frecuentes de ingls. La investigacin demuestra que un estudiante avanzado necesita
un vocabulario mnimo de entre 9 y 10 mil palabras. El objetivo en esta pregunta debe
ser acertar todas o casi todas las palabras.
v. No saber qu significa una de estas palabras frecuentes es malo, pero no tanto como
pensar que significa algo completamente distinto. Por lo tanto, en el caso de no saber
una de las palabras no se aconseja tratar de adivinarla; la posibilidad de acertar es muy
baja mientras que la de perder tiempo y causar mala impresin es muy alta.

Comentarios
iii. La correcta pronunciacin de palabras que son comunes como question /kwestn/ es
esencial dado que se trata de sonidos que aparecen en muchas palabras en ingls.
Pronunciar mal question, por ejemplo, da a entender que tambin se pronunciar mal
otras palabras muy frecuentes que contienen la secuencia st- como suggestion,
gesture, etc.
a) Tambin le gustan las lenguas extranjeras y puede que decida estudiar ingls o francs;
tan pronto como llegue a casa, le voy a preguntar si quiere ms informacin sobre los cursos
disponibles.

b) Dijo que me llamara y espero que lo haga porque no me voy a ocupar del problema bajo

Comentarios
i. Cada error supone una penalizacin de 3 puntos. Por lo tanto, con siete errores se han
perdido 21 puntos ms del 50% de los puntos y en principio se suspende el examen
entero.
ii. En este nivel (B2) segn El marco de referencia europeo sobre el aprendizaje, la
enseanza y la evaluacin de lenguas el usuario debe mostrar, Buen control
gramatical; todava puede cometer deslices espordicos, errores no sistemticos y
pequeos fallos en la estructura de la frase, pero son escasos y a menudo puede
corregirlos retrospectivamente. En este contexto de un examen escrito hay tiempo
suficiente para corregir los errores retrospectivamente. Por error no sistemtico se
entiende un error que no infringe reglas gramaticales, ortogrficas o lxicas.
iii. Se debe recordar tambin que las frases que aparecen en el examen son idnticas o
casi idnticas a frases que aparecen en las secciones del libro Gramtica Inglesa para
Hispanohablantes que se identifican en la Gua del Estudio para que se estudien en
preparacin para este examen.

4. Read the extract below and write a summary in a maximum of 24 words (25 points):
Ashenden was in the habit of asserting that he was never bored. It was one of his notions that
only such persons were as had no resources in themselves and it was but the stupid that
depended on the outside world for their amusement. Ashenden had no illusions about himself
and such success in current letters as had come to him had left his head unturned. He
distinguished acutely between fame and the notoriety that rewards the author of a successful
novel or a popular play; and he was indifferent to this except in so far as it was attended with
tangible benefits. He was perfectly ready to take advantage of his familiar name to get a better
state-room in a ship than he had paid for, and if a Customs-house officer passed his luggage
unopened because he had read his short stories Ashenden was pleased to admit that the
pursuit of literature had its compensations. He sighed when eager young students of the
drama sought to discuss its technique with him, and when gushing ladies tremulously
whispered in his ear their admiration of his books he often wished he was dead. But he
thought himself intelligent and so it was absurd that he should be bored. It was a fact that he
could talk with interest to persons commonly thought so excruciatingly dull that their fellows
fled from them as though they owed them money. It may be that here he was but indulging the
professional instinct that was seldom dormant in him; they, his raw material, did not bore him
any more than fossils bore the geologist. And now he had everything that a reasonable man
could want for his entertainment. He had pleasant rooms in a good hotel and Geneva is one of
the most agreeable cities in Europe to live in. He hired a boat and rowed on the lake or hired a
horse and trotted sedately, for in that neat and orderly canton it is difficult to find a stretch of
turf where you can have a good gallop, along the macadamized roads in the environs of the
town. He wandered on foot about its old streets, trying among those grey stone houses, so
quiet and dignified, to recapture the spirit of a past age. He read again with delight Rousseau's
Confessions, and for the second or third time tried in vain to get on with La Nouvelle Helotse.
He wrote. He knew few people, for it was his business to keep in the background, but he had
picked up a chatting acquaintance with several persons living in his hotel and he was not
lonely. His life was sufficiently filled, it was varied, and when he had nothing else to do he
could enjoy his own reflections; it was absurd to think that under these circumstances he could
possibly be bored, and yet, like a little lonely cloud in the sky, he did see in the offing the
possibility of boredom. There is a story that Louis XTV, having summoned a courtier to attend
him on a ceremonial occasion, found himself ready to go as the courtier appeared; he turned
to him and with icy majesty said, J'ai failli attendre, of which the only translation I can give, but
a poor one, is, I have but just escaped waiting: so Ashenden might have admitted that he now
but just escaped being bored.

ii. Resumir un texto en tan pocas palabras supone entender bien el texto y luego decidir qu
informacin es fundamental y de qu informacin se puede prescindir. Lo fundamental en
cuentos suele ser decir quin est haciendo qu dnde, cundo y por qu. Estos conceptos
pueden expresarse en una frase as:
Ashenden, a successful author, who has often said he is never bored, finds
himself in Geneva and close to boredom. (20 words)
1. The extract talks about Ashenden, one man that he thinks if you want to get success in your
live, you have to do anything you can, while that reports you tangible benefits, because if you
get this, you will never get a bored life.
2. Ashenden is a writer obsessed with the idea not to be bored, he is trying to entretain himself
all the time avoiding the boredom.
Este resumen tiene 24 palabras, se mantiene en el mximo permitido. Contiene varios errores
(por ejemplo, not to be bored debe ser of not being bored, entretain debe ser entertain; y the no
es necesario antes de boredom. Se calific con 14 puntos.
3. Ashenden is a remarkable writer who is never bored. His life seems to fulfil all his
expectations. But, sometimes, he feels he is bored.
Este resumen est muy completo. Recoge casi toda la informacin y est
expresado en un ingls correcto. Tiene 24 palabras. Se calific
con 24 puntos.
Comentarios finales
i. Es necesario alcanzar al menos el 50% de cada una de las partes para superarlo. Por tanto,
no se deben dejar preguntas sin contestar. En la prctica conseguir menos del 50% en una
parte no supone el suspenso automtico si se consigue casi el 50% y en otras partes la nota es
alta. Conseguir menos del 50% en dos partes o ms o bastante menos del 50% en una parte
es motivo de suspenso.
ii. En cada una de las asignaturas Ingls Instrumental III, IV, V y VI es necesario demostrar tener
consolidados los conocimientos de las asignaturas previas del bloque Ingls Instrumental.
iii. El nivel de este examen es de B2 del Marco de referencia europeo sobre el aprendizaje, la
enseanza y la evaluacin de lenguas. Hay seis niveles en el Marco. En orden ascendente son:
A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 y C2. El nivel anterior B1 con el cual se termina Ingls Instrumental II es ya
es un nivel muy til; a muchos nos gustara tener un nivel de B1 en japons o rabe por
ejemplo. Pero este Grado en Estudios Ingleses es profesionalizante y los futuros profesores,
traductores, editores o intrpretes necesitan tener el nivel C2.
