NICARAGUA
It was in 2007 that Nicaragua, through
their then-president, pushed renewable
energy through investments. In 2012,
they already achieved the fifth-highest
percentage worldwide of its GDP in devel-
oping renewable energy. Until June 2015,
Nicaragua already produced 54% of their
electricity through renewables. The goal
in 2020 is to become 90% dependent on
renewable energy.

There was a time when Germany had even
to pay people to use electricity for several
hours because they have too much ener-

feat, Germany, through their solar power,
has been able to meet up to 78% of a days

Despite being the worlds largest carbon

stalling wind energy in 2014, the most in
the world. In the same year, they also had
the second highest installed solar PV ca-

42% of its electricity in 2015 even with
two wind farms offline. That enabled them

Quite a feat in solar power is that of the
United States of America: in 2014, a new
solar energy system is installed every two
minutes and 30 seconds, which earned
them the fifth place on the installed solar
PV capacity worldwide. Not only does the
US specialize in solar, but also wind: they
have the second highest installed wind

some imbalance between electricity gen-
eration and demand, with only 13 percent
of the countrys electricity in 2014 coming

possible that we can reduce 36 billion tons (and expected
to grow year on year) to zero, nil, nada, niente?
Gates has a simple yet masterful illustration of how the
world might get its CO2 emissions down to zero.
He explained that CO2 is a product of four factors:
P (population), S (services used by each person), E
(energy needed to provide each of those services) and
C (carbon dioxide, which is produced by E). Gates said
that in order to reduce CO2 to zero, one of the factors
should be zero. Simple multiplication, isnt it?
But, reducing one of the factors to zero may be easier environmentally friendly technologies, carbon-free

EKOenergy
REVOLUTIONIZING SUSTAINABLE
RENEWABLE ENERGY
EKOenergy believes that using renewable energy every-
where is possible. Though it might take years to con-
vince governments of this idea, this non-profit organi-
zation is going the extra mile to raise awareness on using
renewable energy.
EKOenergy wants change in the energy sector. As an
international network of organizations dedicated to the
environment and renewable energy, it has continually
encouraged people in different parts of the world to use
sustainable energy instead of coal and fossil fuels. Mo-
bilizing thousands of citizens across the globe to protect
nature.
Launched back in 2013, this organization is growing
fast, with its members increasing and certifying around
1 TWh of green electricity. Theres definitely no sign of
resting for EKOenergy. In this exclusive interview, get
the chance to know more about the people behind it and
their plans to achieve their goals in providing sustain-
able energy. They even have an advice for all the young
engineers out there.
THE COMPANY
GN: Describe your company.
EKOenergy is a not-for-profit organization that pro-
motes renewable energy. Our most visible tool is our
EKOenergy label for sustainable renewable electricity,
which we launched in 2013. We started in Europe but
are now also preparing for launch in other continents.
Our members, over 40 environmental NGOs from over
30 countries, decide about the global strategy and the
budget. The daily management is in the hands of the
Secretariat, which is based in Helsinki.
GN: How big is EKOenergy?
After only 3 years of activities, we now certify 1 TWh
of green electricity and we have about 50 licensed sell-
ers in 15 countries. Both our volumes and network are
growing fast.
GN: Describe your mission, vision and values. CLEAN ENERGY AND
ITS IMPORTANCE
We promote sustainable renewable energy and encour-
age consumers to vote with their wallets. Our ecolabel GN: What is clean energy?
helps consumers navigate the electricity market.
All energy we promote comes from renewable sources:
GN: Where is this company headed? hydropower, wind, solar, biomass. What some people
dont realize is that the production of renewables can

velop activities in all countries, with thousands of sellers mass can result in deforestation. At EKOenergy, we take
and millions of proud EKOenergy consumers. these aspects into account as well: we set strict sustain-
ability criteria.
GN: Whats the importance of pursuing clean energy?
We all know that the fight against climate change is a
race against the clock. Amidst a lot of scary news, there
is at least one reason for hope: technically it is possible
to replace all fossil fuels with renewable energy. Also
financially it is possible, renewables have a reputation
for being expensive when this is not the case. In many
areas, renewable energy is already cheaper than fossil
fuels, and the prices continue to fall.
Where politicians and traditional companies dont act
(or dont act fast enough), consumers can take an im-
portant role. Think of the RE100 (www.there100.org),
a group of large multinationals, all striving for 100%
renewable energy. Such actions arent only sound eco-
nomic choices, they also accelerate the necessary, global
growth of renewable energy.
EKOENERGYS FUTURE
AND ITS CHALLENGES
GN: What are the future innovations that your company
is pursuing?
We want to bring our EKOenergy label to new markets.
We made small steps forward in several Asian countries
and also in Latin-America we have concrete plans. Re-
cently we started looking for contacts in the Arab world
and in Africa. By the way, we welcome all help!
My own task is to map opportunities in Russia. We are
in contact with several key stakeholders and discussing
how to enable Russian consumers to play a role in the
energy transition.
Apart from that, we are now also working on the first
international ecolabel for renewable gas and district
heating.
GN: What impact have you delivered?
The best measures of impact are the projects we finance
via our Climate Fund mentioned earlier. Apart from
that, we also manage an Environmental Fund, whose
money is used to finance river restoration projects. Last
year we financed 4 of these river restoration projects.
We can of course also measure the number of EKOener-
gy consumers, and that number is growing fast.
But much more is happening. Via our positive commu-
nication we convinced more people that a world without
fossil fuels is possible. It is not possible to specify how
big our role is compared to the many other initiatives.
We also think this is not that relevant. The energy tran-
sition is taking place thanks to millions of initiatives all
over the world, and we are proud to contribute to that
evolution.

and employees, MESIA became the largest
and most respected solar association in
MENA with a strong membership base of
over 150 solar related companies.
MESIAs vision is to enable solar energy
deployment in MENA, and be the trusted
partner to both public and private entities
to that endeavor. Through its various
regional initiatives (influencing policies,
finance and technology deployment)
MESIA aims to encourage the growth of
solar industry so that solar energy can
represent a larger portion of energy mix

GETTING TO KNOW
GN: Introduce yourself. How many years have you been
working in your industry?
Karin Haara: I am the executive director of the World
Bioenergy Association and it all started in 2008. Build-
ing up a new global organisation is a major challenge,
but I really believe that bioenergy is going to be one of
the most important players globally in the field of re-
newable energy.
I was born in northern parts of Sweden and studied at
the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. There, I
acquired my Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering.
After attending different initiatives concerning renew-
able energy I decided to devote my professional work
life to something that would be of importance to future
generations, something that would be in balance with
nature. The answer is bioenergy.
In 1983, I started as an energy consultant and later on
in 1988 as a project manager for the Swedish Bioenergy
Association. During this time, I was involved in differ-
ent bioenergy projects such as promoting education, sta-
tistics and information, national and international con-
ferences and lately also international bioenergy business
projects. Bioenergy is a widespread area and throughout

WBAS STAND ON
CLEAN ENERGY
GN: What is clean energy as defined by your organiza-
tion/company?
Karin: Clean energy should be renewable! Clean ener-
gy is tied with the definition of the sustainable devel-
opment as envisaged in the Brundtland commission
report. First and foremost, clean energy should meet the
current energy needs without compromising the needs
of our future generations. Hence, no fossil fuels.
Clean energy should also be affordable and transparent.
Technologies like Nuclear energy which are not only ex-
pensive, but also carry significant cost burdens due to
disasters have to be avoided.
Clean energy should be reliable. Millions of people in
Africa and Asia suffer from unreliable and inefficient

GN: Why bother? Whats the importance of pursuing
clean energy?
Karin: Energy is everything. We use electricity, heating,
transport fuels to run our planet. Everything we do is
tied with the use of energy. It is of utmost importance as
to where we get the energy and how we use it. We have
been using energy unsustainably with little or no care
for the safety of the planet for generations. Only recently
have we realized the drastic negative impacts of climate
change. Climate change impacts everyone from island
nations in the pacific to mega cities in Asia to quaint
Scandinavian countries up north. What we do on this
planet now affects everyone. It is not an issue between
neighbors or cities or even countries. It affects the whole
planet and in that context energy is central.
Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources is
the only way forward!

According to the company representative,
both sources of energy should be able
to generate about 75% of the energy it
