HOW TO WORK WITH: COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITIES

Here are some activities which are easy and dont require any extra material. (besides the board)

What is it?

Any activity where your students are able to talk to each other.

Activity 1: Cards: You have a pdf. on this

What should the teacher do while they are practicing? Join them or just look and help the ones in need.

Activity 2: Games: There are so many things you could do just using the board. Ill write another file specific on
this.

What should the teacher do while they are practicing? Be the mediator of the game.

Activity 3: Writing Conversations (ALL LEVELS AND UNITS)

What should the teacher do while they are practicing? Keep quiet and relax, monitor sometimes and help if
necessary. Check it out for mistakes when theyre finished.

What for?

1. Students interaction.
2. Grammar practice.
3. The students have to use their imagination. They are going to use the language as wish.

How to?

Ask your students to write a conversation similar to the book ones. Present them a theme and the grammar
they are supposed to use.

Let them write it in groups. Each of them has to be a character. Give the students 20 minutes top for that.

Ask them to practice and after that ask them to present the conversation to the whole class. Tell the students of
the other groups youre going to ask questions about the conversations presented by the groups otherwise they
might not pay attention. You can give points to the groups or people that get to answer correctly.

TIP: Ask them to write something similar to the oral test so they can practice.

Example: Basic unit 8: Write a conversation where you and your friends are preparing a party. Use: will,
would, should and at least 5 WH-QUESTIONS.

Activity 4: Oral Interaction (BASIC B +)


What should the teacher do while they are practicing? Join them or just look and help the ones in need.

What for?

1. Students interaction.
2. Grammar practice.

How to?

Its very similar to the one above, the difference is they dont do the writing. They have to speak right off.
Students are supposed to act out specific situations. Teacher is allowed to join.

Example: Inter unit 7: The students have to get messages sent by the teacher to someone.

- Teacher goes to the coordination room and let the reception telephone in the classroom with the
students.
- Teacher calls, one of the students picks the phone.
Hi, could I talk to Anna, please?
Sorry shes not in
Could I leave a message?
Yes
Would you tell her

TIP: Explain really well what they should do. Say that they have to get the message, the name of the person
calling, to whom is the message, the message and the phone number.

Activity 5: Interviews (ALL LEVELS)

What should the teacher do while they are practicing? Seat back and watch, help if they need.

How to?

- Students are supposed to interview each other.


- The teacher has to provide at least 5 questions.
- They ask each other in pairs and report back to the teacher.

Variation:
- You could ask them to create the questions.
- They could interview people from outside the class (other teacher, Manuel, Irma, Rejane, students of
higher levels)
