Today's session was all about getting to know our student Elaina and her feeling comfortable with us.
We were given questions to ask her; for example what topics she likes to learn about, what's her favorite subject
at school, does she do any extracurricular activities (sports), and what she likes to do. Elaina was very talkative
and made conversation with us easily; to the point we were rushing to finish the questionnaires and surveys,
because once she got into a story, she kept talking and talking until one of us had to snap her back into
answering the questions. However, we didnt want to stop her from telling her stories. She also moved a lot.
She never stayed in one place. She took her shoes of a few times during the session and asked if we can do
something fun after finishing the questionnaires.

Upon from meeting Elaina, she was expressing herself right away and being goofy. She fascinated us
when she told us she learned about drugs in school, shes five turning six in a few weeks. She also wrote her full
name and told us everyones name in her family and whose birthday came first in the year. In addition, she
loved telling stories and is very communicative. I love how she knew what she wants to be when she grows up.
When she grows up she hopes to do everything! She also wants to go to Molloy when she graduates high school.
She loved sharing about her family, and her gymnastics! She was so excited to graduate Kindergarten and for
her gymnastics recital. I love her personality and intelligence and it truly showed through todays session. We
cannot wait to work with her and see how she does with each lesson we will engage her in.

In our first session of testing, we started Elaina with sequencing. We asked her if she knew what
sequencing is and she responded with whats sequencing? She watched a brain pop video as an introduction
to the lesson. She was very engaged and loved the quiz; which she answered most of the questions correct. We
were very impressed with her ability to retain all the info from the video.
For the math part of the testing, Elaina completed a task card activity. Mary read Elaina the problem on
the task cards and Elaina answered the problem on the task card and wrote the sum on a piece of paper. During
the activity, Elaina kept asking if we can do something more fun. She was excited to play games and learn
through those games.

Getting to know Elaina last session, we observed that she is a visual and kinesthetic learner. We
incorporated these two multiple intelligences by having her engaged with videos and hands on activities. Elaina
loves to draw and color, so for introducing Elaina to transitioning words of sequencing, we had Elaina trace her
hand and had her write down each transition word in order on each finger. She loved it. For math, she got a bit
bored and wanted to do another activity. Which we planned a fun interactive game for the next sessions.

In our second session of testing, we read a passage about the life cycle of a frog, which Elaina chose last
session to read. She wanted to know why frogs have a tail as a tadpole. Elaina read beautifully. Better than most
five year olds I know. She struggled reading words when she didnt follow the words with her finger. She
seemed be pause to look for the next word.
For the math part of the tutoring, we started with addition. The activity we played with Elaina is called
Addition War similar to the card game I declare War She loved playing with cards and wanted to help
straighten everyones deck. Elaina is very competitive and always wants to win; we noticed she would get
discouraged if the sum of her cards was smaller than everyones sum. When she got stuck adding, it took her a
while to answer and sometimes she would say I dont know but we all knew she knew it. She had trouble
adding even when counting it out on her fingers, usually if it was adding bigger numbers such as 9 + 7.

We were very impressed with how much Elaina loved taking quizzes during the post and pretests. She
always wanted to get all the answers correct; and for the most part, she did. She answered a few questions so
fast that she got impatient because the game was taking too long to load the next question. She also loved
playing against Nikki and wanted to beat her all the time. In Blooms theory, he states that learners will be able
to learn ninety percent of what they say and do. Having Elaina for an hour and giving her two different lessons,
she is of percentile to Blooms theory she is a very intelligent girl!

Reaction to Effectiveness of Instructional Activities Which Took Place during the Tutoring Session,

In our third session of testing, Elaina started to learn and write her first draft about the passage Frogs
Life Cycle from last sessions read. Before Elaina wrote her first draft, we had her re-read the passage. After she
wrote her first draft, we recorded Elaina reading her first draft on an app called Chatter Pix. Elaina loved chatter
pix! She did say she didnt like the sound of her voice, but who does? I think the Chatter Pix is great for Elaina,
especially with learning how to write a paragraph. She will be about to notice where sentences dont make sense
or if she has to edit her mistakes.
For the math part of testing, we started Elaina with two-digit addition. She had a bit of a harder time
with adding a two-digit number to a one-digit number. To help Elaina and engage her, we played twister math;
which she loved because she was up and moving and running and touching colors. This game was a great way
to incorporate math and a game all children love to play.

Elaina, as we all know if very gifted. She reads and does math on a first and second grade level. It is
hard to challenge a student like Elaina. Jerome Bruner states that children can tackle challenging topics in age
appropriate ways. These topics can be revisited and expanded upon year after year. For Elaina, she loves
playing games and board games and fun activities on the computer. Incorporating a childhood board game to a
new math lesson helped Eliana in many ways. I feel like she will remember tricks we taught her by
remembering that game. It also helped her because the answers were on the back of the card and she could self-
assess herself while learning and having fun.

In our fourth session of testing, Elaina began to edit her first draft. Before editing, we review the editing
checklist with Elaina to she will understand what to edit in her writing. She will use resources (posters) to edit
her writing for capitalization, punctuation, and to make sure it makes sense.
For the math part of testing, Elaina used a big dice to add! She loved throwing it around and running to
where it landed. Thankfully the dice is soft because it sometimes landed on our heads or on Elizabeths laptop!
For this activity, Elaina rolled one big dice at a time and Elaina had to count whichever dots was facing up and
add those two numbers together. I believe she benefited from this game because she was having fun and kept
saying oh, thats easy!

I feel like I enjoyed this session just as much as Elaina. Using the manipulatives such as the dice and the
counters, it made math easier and more fun. She wasnt just sitting on the floor or at a desk reading and writing
out math sentences, although she would breeze through those as well. Elaina was also starting to understand the
process of writing a paragraph. I believe since we review what we did last session and repeat the quizzes during
pre and post-testing, she begins to recognize and remember the processes. Her ability to memorize and attain
information in such little time amazes me each time we meet.

In our fifth session of testing, Elaina began the last process of the process of writing a paragraph. Today
she wrote her final draft and read it onto chatter pix. She always gets excited for it. She loves to see the mouth
of the character we picked more and her voice following the mouth! She gets such a kick out of it. Not sure if it
was the weather today but Eliana seemed drained out when writing her final draft. She kept making silly
mistakes and asking to go onto the computer instead. However, she did finish and her handwriting was excellent.
For the math part of testing, we used Brain Pop. Elaina loves playing fun learning activities on the
computer so today we utilized this opportunity to challenge her knowledge about the addition and subtraction
she learned in our past sessions. She was very engaged in the activity and kept asking is she could play again.

This tutoring session felt a bit relaxed. Elaina was more inactive today. She really enjoys the Chatter Pix
and so far we have tried to incorporate that to her ELA lessons as much as possible. At first she was nervous but
as we got through other lessons, she was more excited and kept getting Elizabeths phone so she can start
reading her writing.

In our last session of testing with Elaina, we ended with her reading her published writing assignment
onto Chatter Pix. After, we got a ball and wrote down all the transition words on the ball. We played catch and
whichever word was under her right thumb she had to read the word and give the definition. We were amazed
that she knew what all the transition words are and defined them! We all felt accomplished and so proud of
Elaina!
For the math part of the testing, we played math bowling. She loved rolling the ball, but half the time
she was being silly and rolling the ball to other things. We reviewed addition and subtraction using the activity
and she had a blast!

Watching Elaina understand and know the process of writing a paragraph in a few short lessons amazed
me. She is very intelligent for her age. I know we challenged her and she successfully surpassed our
expectations of her knowing what we knew before we even met her. Im so happy she loved the math bowling
game, we wanted to end with a game that is fun and yet she is still learning. I love her not only do we challenge
her but her parents challenge her at home. As a visual and kinesthetic learner, I believe we engaged her in the
learning styles she was strongest at. As Gardner states, learning through using your body is one of the basic
ways in which we can take in information and learn it.
