LESSON PLAN COOPERATIVE 2

Describe the class:

The classroom is made up of 18 students ranging in ages of nine and ten. Two of the students are
ESL (English as a second language) students and three gifted students. Each table has students
sitting together in there group structures.
ESL students: Rosa Diaz and Amy Santiago
Gifted students: Abby Sciuto, Spencer Reid, Penelope Garcia
Subject/Skill:
Art skill: combining primary colors and usage of secondary colors in paintings
Objectives:
Students will be put into Think-Pair-Share groups to discuss and identify what primary and
secondary colors are 75%accuracy.
In their groups of two students will create a color wheel with basic primary and secondary colors
with 80% accuracy and will share it with the class.
In Think-Pair-Share groups will be able to combine primary colors to make secondary colors
using finger paint and will able to discuss their paintings with their classmates with 75%
accuracy.
Procedures:
1. Write objectives on board, state the objects to the class before the students get the
materials. Have each table state the objectives once the students have stated the
objectives they may get there materials.
a. Students will get everything but the paint. (paint will be handed by instructor)
2. Prerequisites:
Students should have the basic idea of what the colors are and how they use
them to color.
Students will need to know the definitions and terms of the following:
o Primary colors, Secondary colors, Tertiary color
3. Once students are all seated with materials the inductor will place the students into pairs
of two.
a. ESL students will each be paired with a bilingual student
b. Gifted students will be in group together.
4. Instructor will begin by placing red, blue, and yellow finger paint in front of each student
pair.
5. Instructor will ask the students to discuss with their pair what colors make red, blue and
yellow.
a. Once students finish discussing have at least 3 pairs answer.
LESSON PLAN COOPERATIVE 3

b. Then reinforce the correct answer by giving the definition of primary colors:
Primary colors are a group of colors from which all other colors can be obtained
by mixing.
6. Once the definition is given ask the student pairs to mix the primary colors together and
see what happens.
a. Have at least 5 pairs show the results.
7. Have the student pairs with the colors green, purple and orange come up and discus to
the class how they make those colors.
8. Once the pairs are done explaining give the students the definition of secondary colors.
a. Secondary colors: are colors resulting from the mixing of two primary colors.
b. Then have the pairs mix one secondary color with a primary color
9. After the pair are done have at least 2 pair come up and explain how they made their new
color.
10. Once they are done explaining ask the pairs, Why do you think the new color you made
is not a secondary color even though you used red, blue and yellow?
a. Once student share their ideas with the class explain that colors like blue- green,
scarlet red, and orange yellow are not secondary colors. Secondary colors are
only the colors mix by primary colors. Mixing a secondary color with a primary
color does not make another secondary color.
b. Then ask student to think up of a name that might reflect what their new color
will be called. (e.g. If blue, red and yellow make primary colors and primary
colors make secondary colors what might primary and secondary colors make
together?)
c. After student pair give their ideas reinforce the correct answer by stating the
definition of tertiary colors.
i. Tertiary colors the mixture of a primary color with a secondary color
11. After lecture is completed give the instructions for the students group practice
(Instructor will monitor and help during indented practice)
a. Group practice #1: Color wheel
i. Instruct the student pairs to create a color wheel using the colors they
learned about today.
ii. Using crayons students will make three circles with in the center of their
paper using primary colors ( one circle for each color)
iii. After the primary color circles are done students will then make three
outer circles using secondary colors.
iv. Students will walk in pairs checking each of their color wheels to make
sure they are correct.
b. Group practice #2 finger paint:
i. After each pair completed their color wheel with at least 80% accuracy
they will work in pairs using the finger paint to create a picture with all
the primary and secondary colors used at least once (mixing the primary
colors does not count as the use of primary colors).
ii. After their pictures are completed they will share with the classroom:
LESSON PLAN COOPERATIVE 4

1. What colors they used in their pictures?

2. How they created the color?
3. What kind of color is it? (primary or secondary)
12. After pictures are finished students are to place their pictures on drying racks (unfinished
pictures as well, is okay if they do not finish)
13. Students will then clean up following clean up procedures on the board.
Materials:
Blank paper, finger paint paper, finger paint, crayons, napkins, water
Group structures:
ESL students will each be paired with a bilingual student
Gifted students will be in group together.
Any students who are not listing or misbehaving can be moved to the single student desk.
Modifications:
All the ESL students will have an instruction sheet with a picture play by play in Spanish of the
procedures. Students who speak both languages are allowed to help ELS students during
instruction. ESL students must speak for 30 seconds when showing their presentation.
Gifted Students are to create their finger paint picture using primary and secondary colors at least
3 times in their pictures and be able to use a tertiary color at least once.
Assessment:
Students will be assess by their performance in making the color wheel. All color wheels must
label all primary and secondary colors correctly
For review and practice students will create their finger-paint using the primary and secondary
colors in class and be able to explain to the classroom what color combinations they have in their
picture with their partners help.
