The home: A semi-detached house

in Leopardstown
Who lives here? Louise, Peter
and their three children

A
fter more than ten years in their
house Louise and Peter faced a
situation that so many homeowners
will be familiar with. While they
loved the site their house was on
they needed more space and so had toyed with
the idea of moving.
Louise explained: For years we went back
and forth on the decision as to whether to
move. If we moved it would have been so we
could be closer to the schools but then realised
we wouldnt be able to have the size of house
we wanted.
Last year they decided that, rather than move
house, they would stay put but add a large
extension to the side and rear of the property.
The former layout was that of a traditional

28 THE BEST OF IRISH KITCHENS

KITCHENS

semi-detached house with a small utility room

and separate kitchen and dining room but the
remodelling work meant they could create a
new open plan kitchen/living/dining area.
Louise said: The new kitchen was very much
the main focus of the work as its really the
centre piece of the house. Our last kitchen was
small and storage was limited so we could never
bulk buy and we rarely used our dining room
for the purpose in which it was intended.
We visited the Noel Dempsey Design
showroom on the back of some of their lovely
pictures in magazines and on Houzz. We saw
more beautiful designs there, met with David
and knew this was the right kitchen company
for us. Right from design to install the whole
experience was a pleasure! The design process
was very collaborative where we blended our
ideas with Davids ideas and expertise and we
went through a few iterations until we nailed
down our final design.
As Louise used to work in the United States and
the family regularly holiday in France she wanted
the kitchen to take inspiration from a mix of
American and European styles with the emphasis
very much on it being a family living space.
In the kitchen area she wanted clean lines
and integrated appliances with everything
hidden away to keep the space open and airy.
As she was so impressed with Davids plans
for the kitchen Louise also asked him to design
units for their utility room and lounge and
create closets for the hall.
At all stages from start to finish, if I was
unsure of how something would work, I would
drop the team a call or an email and it was
promptly answered or worked through with me
over the phone or in the showroom or onsite,
said Louise. They connected with the builders,
electricians etc. keeping me continuously
informed which gladly took that stress away
from us. It was so obvious that everyone cared
about their craft and the quality of their work.
The family are delighted with their new kitchen
from both an aesthetic and functional perspective.
Louise commented: Its genuinely
transformed our lives. We now have the space
to enjoy cooking, theres plenty of storage in
both the cupboards and fridge freezer and we
can really socialise as a family.
The other night Peter was sat on his laptop, the
kids were on the X-Box and I was making dinner,
previously that would have meant us all sitting in
separate rooms but thats no longer the case.

Louise and Peter wanted a functional

open plan living/kitchen/dining area with
clean lines and integrated appliances.
They wanted to be able to use the space
as a family area and it was important the
room had a sense of flow and balance.
The island with its contrasting tone is one
of the rooms main focal points but is
also very practical with its extra sink and
storage. The mirrored splashback behind
the hob is great, not only for reflecting
light back into the room but for also
giving it a very social feel as it means you
never really have your back to anyone.

they wanted to go for more of a mix
of classic and contemporary. With four
children under the age of 14 theirs is a
busy household and they needed a kitchen to
suit their lifestyle.
With windows along most of the walls the
plan for the kitchen took care of itself somewhat
and the layout very much dictated the scheme.
Anna said: We knew we wanted a lot of
windows when we were building the house but
it did then mean when it came to the kitchen
there was only a small amount of wall space which
meant we had to go for under counter storage.
I had a pretty good idea in mind for what
I wanted. Wed previously had a white kitchen

darker tones and wooden look. As the room is
so bright I knew it could take it and I also felt it
wouldnt date as quickly.

deliver a bespoke service and after seeing
the work of Shalford Interiors in a magazine
decided to meet with designer Ferghal to hear
what suggestions he might have.
I loved that when I met with Ferghal he
seemed genuinely excited about the project,
Anna commented. He took all my ideas on board
then added in a few of his own. I also loved that it
was him doing the job from start to finish.
Among Annas requirements was an island,
a larder and a range cooker. Deep presses
ensure storage isnt an issue and there is plenty
of counter space for preparing packed lunches
and dinners. Ferghal designed the larder with
its blackboard front to take all the familys food
produce and its location next to the fridge freezer
means unpacking the shopping is no chore.

Rather than moving house they made the

Joanne is still reeling from the difference the
extra space has made, she said: Its such a huge

Joanne said: We loved what Mark did in our

Anita explained: The house was in good

The kitchen was one of the rooms most in need
of a little TLC and required some renovating to
bring it in line with the couples lifestyle.
Anita said: It just wasnt working for us. The

the rooms proportions. A good range of
appliances was another key feature, as was
lots of functional, easy to access storage.
A custom built double larder for practical
food storage was also on the wish list.

Moore Architects the clients
wanted an extension that
would replace the existing dark
and outdated kitchen and open
up the back of their house and give them a
larger, brighter kitchen/living/dining space.
The previous kitchen was small and no
longer fit for purpose. Paul Moore, director and
designer commented: The clients came to us
in the very first instance, initially to discuss the
renovation and extension and then we worked
through to the kitchen design.
The previous kitchen was compact and dark
so they wanted to make much better use of this
space and bring it more in line with modern,
open plan living.
The transformation has resulted in a bright,
sociable family space.
Tearing down everything that had gone
before the design team took the new scheme
out to the side and rear of the existing semi-
detached house utilising the garage space and
transforming a small living room into a rear
entrance hall and cloakroom. It also gave the
house something it had previously lacked;
a back door and some much needed storage
space.
Knocking through from the front to the back

appliances and plenty of visual hooks.
Appearances are deceptive though as what
looks like panelled cupboard doors on the wall
to the left of the island actually conceals a secret
door through to the utility room and a large oak
lined larder unit.
The eye catching walnut unit around the
island adds in interest and houses a bespoke
rack and wine cooler.
We had very definite boundaries with the
kitchen, we couldnt go beyond the existing
building lines so had only left to right to work
with. This meant making very square inch
of space count and basing every decision
around how functional it would be. It was
about maximising any opportunities we had,
commented Paul.
By building in a banquette they were able
to fit in a large dining table that can easily
accommodate 10-12 and makes the best use of
the available space.
The raised height of the Smeg gas hob draws
the eye and sits at contrast with its surroundings
to stylish effect. A fully integrated Elica cooker
hood sits in the middle of the upper level
cabinetry while the cupboards on either side
with under-lit glass shelves reflect the light back
into the scheme.
Commenting on the finished scheme and the
design process Paul said: Being involved from

and somewhat unique position. We have the
vision and experience to see the bigger picture

The home: A detached property

Who lives here? Ursula and Michael

U
rsula and Michael wanted a
completely contemporary scheme
for the kitchen in their new build
home. Working with the architects
Paul McCreanor & Co they created a
home that is striking in its simplicity with plenty
of straight lines and an abundance of light.
They initially struggled to find a kitchen
designer that could create the look they were after
and it was on Pauls recommendation that they
visited Darren at Designer Kitchens by Morgan.
Ursula explained: A lot of the kitchen
companies we tried at the start were very
much focused on the more traditional style of
kitchen. We were quite clear in our idea of what
we wanted and when we met with Darren he
just got it straight away and was right on our
wave length.
The couple wanted a very sleek, minimalist,
design with no high level units and a separate
pantry for additional storage. Using a colour
palette of grey and white with additional tones
of copper and brown ensured the kitchen was
in keeping with the rest of the house.
The stunning Dekton breakfast bar is a
main focal point in the room as is the backlit
extractor hood.
As the couple love to entertain high quality
appliances and a practical layout were of
upmost importance. The rooms linear look
makes maximum use of the available space and
helps achieves the ultra modern scheme the
couple wanted.
The larder is much more than just a functional
storage space. Painstakingly designed by Darren
with an acute arrangement of angular shelving
and leaning vertical supports it provides
aesthetic impact and drama.

The home: A dormer bungalow

in Terenure, Dublin
Who lives here? Clodagh and Paul
and their three children

W
ith three children and another
one on the way Clodagh and Paul
made the decision to renovate
their home to give them some
extra space. A large extension
took their home of ten years from 900 square feet
to three and a half thousand square feet. A spacious
open plan living/kitchen and dining area was at the
heart of the renovation and Clodagh wanted a style
that was classic and timeless.
Contemporary just isnt us, she explained.
Especially with young children and the style
of the house, it just wouldnt have worked.
Instead we wanted something traditional but
bright and fresh. Its a big undertaking so you
want it to stand the test of time.
After thorough research and looking around
Clodagh and Paul decided Ferndale Kitchens
and designers John and Orla were the right
people for the job.
Clodagh said: We loved what we saw in their
showroom, the quality just really stood out and
then when Orla showed us the design theyd
come up with we just loved it.
As the open plan area is so large it was
important the design got the dimensions of the
room just right. Focusing the majority of the
kitchen scheme and appliances along one wall
allowed for freedom of movement and a clear
working zone.
A large island with seating was high on the
wish list and ample storage was crucial for this
expanding family. A spacious walk in larder
unit sits adjacent to the island and holds all the
familys tinned and dried food goods.
We have extra storage space and an
additional fridge in our utility room for any
overflow but to be honest we never need it,
commented Clodagh. Everything has a place
in the kitchen and is close at hand and easy to
find. The larder is an amazing addition to the
kitchen; its so handy.
The island unit straddles the kitchen and
living/dining areas, acting as a soft divide along
with the contrasting gloss and wood floor tiles.

The client wanted a classic kitchen with

contemporary features that wouldnt date,
for the open plan rear extension to their
home. Storage and counter space were
key considerations in the design. We
decided to place a bank of tall units
on either side of the main run in order
to frame the feature mantelpiece and
provide ample storage for the family. A
large island with the sink at one end was
added to provide a large clear surface to
work at.We used a half strength version of
the deeper wall colour on the cabinetry to
create a complementary colour pallet.

they wanted for the kitchen in
their new home Shannon and
Peter were fairly confident.
They wanted something that
was fresh and modern looking but with classic
tones. While they were certain of the look they
wanted to achieve they admit they had little
idea when it came to layout and functionality.
Working with the team at Cherrymore they
were very reliant on designer Lorraine for
advice and input into how to get the best out
of the room.
Shannon explained: Several of our friends
had used Cherrymore and their kitchens are
beautiful. We knew the quality of the work and

The couple love that the kitchen works equally

Weve been genuinely surprised by how much
we use the room, Shannon commented. Theres
so much free floor space that the little one can

Who lives? Rosemarie, Paul and their

W
ith two children under the age
of three Rosemarie and Paul
needed a kitchen that was
functional and family friendly
but didnt want to compromise
on appearance. Building their new build home
they wanted something quite striking and
totally different to what they previously had.
As the kitchen was such a vital room in the
home they actually ended up having to change
their planning permission to suit the layout that
they wanted.
Where originally there had been three
windows along one wall they decided they
wanted an extended overmantel above the
range cooker with a window framing it on
either side.
While still living in their previous home they
visited Brian Dukes Kitchens showroom in
Derry/Londonderry and were impressed with
what they saw. Given the location of their new
house the staff recommended they call into the
Donegal branch and it was here they spotted
their perfect colour scheme.
Rosemarie said: We wanted something a
little out of the norm and loved the idea of a
two-tone colour scheme. When we first visited
the Dukes showroom in Newtowncunningham
we saw a gorgeous grey and navy kitchen and
knew it was exactly what we were looking for.
Aesthetics aside we were also really
impressed with the staff and their approach
to the design process. Oran really listened and
paid attention to what we wanted. He took all
our ideas on board and then made suggestions
based around the information we gave him.

As with all our clients we used the initial

consultation to get to know the client and
help them figure out what they wanted.
Rosemarie wanted a kitchen that was
unique to them and something that looked
great and was very practical but that wasnt
too formal. As in most kitchens storage was
an important factor but they didnt want
the scheme to look too crowded. The large
pantry meant we could limit the rest of the
cabinetry, allowing the room to look very
open and spacious. We incorporated plenty
of points of interest with the detail on the
cabinetry, island and overmantel.
