AkzoNobel Provides Essential Ingredient for

Cities to Embrace Urban Gardens

he power of urban gardens to re-
vitalize cities and make peoples
lives more liveable and inspiring
is being showcased by AkzoNobel at
the Habitat III Conference on Housing
and Sustainable Urban Development,
which starts today in Quito, the capital
of Ecuador.
As part of the events Habitat III
Village, a vertical garden has been cre-
ated to help transform a bleak expanse of
concrete into a colorful and more attrac-
tive space for local residents. The garden
has no soil and is based on a hydroponic
system, which uses micronutrients sup-
plied by AkzoNobel to provide essential
minerals for the plants.

more sustainable.

centrated around cities is present-
ing ever-increasing challenges to the

AkzoNobels Methodology for Sustainable
Ship Owners Wins Environmental Award

kzoNobels pioneering methodol-
ogy for rewarding ship owners
who use sustainable hull coatings
has been named Environmental Leader
Product of the Year for 2016. The award
recognizes the introduction of the ship-
ping industrys first carbon credits meth-
odology, which was developed by the
companys Marine Coatings business.
Launched in 2014 in conjunction
with The Gold Standard Foundation
and Fremco Group, the scheme is based
on ship owners converting existing ves-
sels from a biocidal antifouling system
to a premium, biocide-free hull coating
such as Intersleek, part of AkzoNobels
International range of marine coatings.
The methodology financially rewards
ship owners for using sustainable hull
coatings that improve operational ef-
ficiencies and reduce emissions. This is
reflected in the awards success, which
specifically recognizes the role of the ini-
tiative in improving environmental and
energy management in the shipping in-
dustry, while delivering bottom line ben-
efits to those who participate.
Commenting on the companys award,
the judging panel said: Intersleek is a
great technology to help reduce green-
house emissions from the shipping indus-
try, and the carbon credits methodology
will help incentivize ship owners to adopt
it. This could be a very impactful initia-
tive, leading the industry towards sustain-
able shipping.
Oscar Wezenbeek, managing director of
AkzoNobel Marine Coatings, added: We
are delighted that our efforts to support our
customers, while also making an important
contribution to reducing global emissions,
has been recognized. This award shows the
impact and relevance of our carbon credits
methodology, not just within the shipping

will give ship owners further motivation to
enroll in the scheme.

Earlier this year, Neda Maritime
Agency Co Ltd, a leading Greek tanker
and bulker owner, became the worlds
first ship owner to be awarded carbon
credits through AkzoNobels landmark
scheme. The company received a total of
13,375 carbon credits potentially worth
around $60,000.
Each carbon credit accrued represents
the avoidance of one ton of CO2 be-
ing emitted to the atmosphere, meaning
that Neda Maritime has offset a total of
13,375 ton of CO2 from its business.

Axalta Coating Systems
to Acquire Coil and Spray
Coatings Manufacturer
Dura Coat Products
Axalta Coating Systems has announced
that it has entered into a definitive agree-
ment to acquire Dura Coat Products, a
manufacturer of coatings for metal coil
and related markets in North America.
Pursuant to the agreement, Axalta will
initially purchase a majority stake in Dura
Coat at the closing which is expected to
occur in the third quarter of 2016 and the
remaining outstanding shares by January
2019, subject to required regulatory ap-
provals and other customary closing con-
ditions. Financial terms of the transaction
were not disclosed.
Founded in 1986, Dura Coat has de-
veloped a leadership position in the mar-
ket via its singular focus on overcoming
customer challenges through innovation.
Well-known Dura Coat brands include
Durapon, Ceranamel and the XT series
of specialty coatings. Dura Coats in-
novative product lines have been for-
mulated to suit a variety of building
construction needs, general industrial
applications, and treatment of aluminum
extrusions. Dura Coat takes great pride
in its strong environmental initiatives
which it achieves through sound manu-
facturing practices and with products
that have eliminated or reduced hazard-
ous air pollutants. Its products are mar-

PPG Helps Refurbish
Associaci de Solidaritat i
Ajuda Venal Center with
Volunteers, Donated Paints
PPG recently helped to rejuvenate the
Associaci de Solidaritat i Ajuda Venal
(ASAV) community center in Rubi,
Barcelona, Spain, with donated paint
and paint supplies as well as employees
who volunteered to fix and brighten the
centers walls. Participating PPG employ-
ees work at the companys Rubi facility
as well as nearby sites in Montcada and
Barber del Valls.
Paint supplies and about 200 liters
of DYRUP brand paints were donated
by the Barber del Valls site. Also,
nine PPG employees collaborated to
perform needed repairs and painting
at the center, where nonprofit organi-
zation ASAV offers support and work-
force training to individuals who are
trying to rebuild their lives.
This was such a fulfilling project,
said Cristina Soler, PPG human resources
director, Portugal and Spain. At the end
of the day, we saw how our efforts and
PPGs donations together helped to im-
prove our community.

Sika Stengthens its
Presence in Latin
America
Sika continues to expand its
presence in Latin America. Another
mortar factory has come on stream in
Ecuador, and a new subsidiary has been
set up in Nicaragua. These two growth
initiatives tap into additional potential in
Latin America and mark the ongoing suc-
cessful implementation of Strategy 2018.
The new mortar factory in Durn near
Guayaquil includes a packaging and lo-
gistics unit in addition to the production
lines that will expand the product port-
folio in the fast-growing mortar segment.
The production facility is Sikas second
in Ecuador. The increased production
capacity will enable Sika to expand its
market share and continue to tap into the
potential offered by Ecuadors construc-
tion sector.
Sika has set up a new subsidiary in
the Nicaraguan capital Managua so that
it can distribute its own products and
further increase its share in the countrys
flourishing construction market. Sika
products have been marketed through
distributors in the country since 1998
and are an established brand.
Nicaragua is one of strongest grow-
ing countries in Latin America. The de-
velopment of the countrys infrastructure,
which includes road and mining projects,
ports, hospitals and schools, is in un-
der realization. Residential construction

PPG Donates More Than
$12,000 to Support Child-
Focused Programs in Two
Russian Communities
PPG has donated $12,100 to help two
child-centered organizations in Russia
expand their programs and services to
area youth. The contributions were made
on behalf of the PPG facilities in Lipetsk
and Kolomna, Russia.
In rural Lipetsk, a donation enabled
administrators at the Griazy orphanage
to repair and update the buildings gym-
nasium. The project received additional
support from local PPG employees, many
of whom volunteered to help renovate
the heavily-used space. Using paints do-
nated by PPG and its distributor, volun-
teers replaced toxic materials on floors
and walls with safer PPG products and
worked side-by-side with children who
live in the orphanage to add decorative
touches throughout the gymnasium.
Five hours north of Lipetsk, a dona-
tion is enabling a local school in Kolomna
to teach children about road safety.
With support from PPG, the Kolomna
Gymnasium No. 2 Kvantor, located near
Moscow, recently purchased and installed
an interactive road-safety training pro-
gram to increase childrens awareness
of common traffic hazards and how to
avoid them. Employees at the PPG facil-
ity in Kolomna requested a donation to
fund the program because they felt their
community needed it.

BCF Drives Major Non-
Compliance Campaign
The British Coatings Federation (BCF)
has launched a major campaign to ensure
solvent-based basecoats in vehicle repairs
are used in a compliant way. Although
the VOC Paint Product Directive has
been in place for over ten years, there is
widespread abuse of the Directive, with

an estimated 30 percent of basecoats

The BCF has recently written to all
vehicle refinish (VR) distributors outlin-
ing the details of the campaign, which
includes a poster to help explain the dif-
ference between solvent- and water-based
basecoats, and when they should be used.
The letter also outlined a mystery shop-
ping exercise where one in four VR dis-
tributors will be visited in the next 12
months, to gather evidence of non-com-
pliance in the sector.
The campaign is backed by the ma-
jor national distributors who attended
a joint meeting with paint manufactur-
ers in January, to discuss this initiative.
The UKs Governments Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
also supports the work of the BCF to
tackle this issue and are keen to ensure
compliance with the regulations.
The ultimate aim of the campaign is

Bodyshops across the UK have invested
heavily in water-based equipment and
compliant technology, as have the paint

tors. It is not fair that they are financially
disadvantaged by this widespread abuse
of the regulations. We are determined to
assist the authorities in enforcing the reg-
ulations and for non-compliant distribu-
tors to be prosecuted as a consequence of
their actions.

More Than $290,000
Through National Merit
Scholarship Program
The PPG Foundation announced that it is
sponsoring more than $290,000 in under-
graduate college scholarships for U.S. stu-
dents through National Merit Scholarship

The new scholarships in-

Valspar Packaging Expands
Capacity in Asia
The Valspar Corporation announced that
it is expanding production capacity at
its Singapore facility to meet increased
demand for its food and beverage pack-
aging products in the Asia Pacific region.
The expansion is expected to come on
line in 2017.
This investment represents another
important milestone in our growth strate-
gy for the region, said Louie Wang, man-
aging director of Valspars Asia Pacific
Packaging business. We have been expe-

Ann Arbor, Michigan Crowned Tnemec 2016 Tank of the Year

The municipal water tank in Ann Arbor, Mich., is this years win-
ner of the Tank of the Year competition sponsored by Tnemec
Company, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance coat-
ings. The 500,000-gallon elevated water tank was selected by a
panel of water tank enthusiasts based on criteria such as artistic
value, significance of the tank to the community, and challenges
encountered during the project.
The Ann Arbor water tower was repainted this year using
a design that depicts various birds in flight, as well as fish swim-
ming in the Huron River, which supplies drinking water to Ann
Arbor, according to Doug Hansen, Director Water Tank Mar-
ket for Tnemec. The design was the winning entry in the citys
Art in the Sky public art contest that drew nearly 600 entries
from city residents of all ages.

BCF Member Survey Shows

Increased Satisfaction
Nearly 100 British Coatings Federation
(BCF) members from across the paints,
coatings, printing inks and wallcover-
ings sectors responded to BCFs major
biennial member survey in the Spring of
2016. Results showed that overall mem-
ber satisfaction has risen from 88 per-
cent to 90 percent.
The survey, of which CEOs or business
heads, or those involved in technical/reg-
ulatory affairs made up over 50% of re-
spondents, showed the highest satisfaction
levels were with technical and regulatory
advice, BCF staff service, communica-
tion with members and responsiveness to
member needs. The top three valued ser-
vices remain the same as in 2014, which
are lobbying, communications to members
and technical advice and guidance.

PG has introduced
SPECTRACRON SPM Series
DTM (direct-to-metal) mono-
coat, a one-component coating that
helps prevent corrosion on heavy-duty,
transportation, agricultural and con-
struction equipment.
Spectracron SPM coating represents
a significant technical advance because
it is engineered for direct application
to pretreated metal substrates while
providing corrosion resistance that is
comparable to traditional two-com-
ponent primer-topcoat systems. The
proprietary high-solids, high-gloss for-
mulation also enables Spectracron SPM
coating to be applied over pretreat-
ment chemistries such as iron-phos-
phate, zinc-phosphate and zirconium
at supplier-recommended weights.

Organizations may apply analytics to busi-

Its no secret that the amount of data and
information that exists is growing rapidly
with no sign of decelerating. Companies
across industries are increasingly looking
to capture new information, better use
of current information and drive timely
action based on analytics. However, the
analysis is only as good as a companys
ability to capture the right data and man-
age it, which is where many companies
are failing.
To produce quality and meaningful
analysis companies are engaging with
consulting firms to develop a strategy
around how to capture, store and se-
cure their data. To best meet client needs
consulting firms are evolving their data
management capabilities to address more
specialized needs, including meeting the
needs of inherited data structural design
and new digital platforms and address-
ing regulatory needs around data quality,
hosting and isolation.
In the industry of commercial analyt-
ics software, an emphasis has emerged
on solving the challenges of analyzing
massive, complex data sets, often when
such data is in a constant state of change.
Such data sets are commonly referred to
as big data. Whereas once the problems
posed by big data were only found in the
scientific community, today big data is a
problem for many businesses that operate
transactional systems online and, as a re-
sult, amass large volumes of data quickly.
The analysis of unstructured data
types is another challenge getting atten-
tion in the industry. Unstructured data
differs from structured data in that its
format varies widely and cannot be stored
in traditional relational databases with-
out significant effort at data transforma-
tion. Sources of unstructured data, such
as email, the contents of word processor
documents, PDFs, geospatial data, etc.,
are rapidly becoming a relevant source of
business intelligence for businesses, gov-
ernments and universities. For example,
in Britain the discovery that one company
was illegally selling fraudulent doctors
notes in order to assist people in defraud-
ing employers and insurance companies,

These challenges are the current in-
spiration for much of the innovation in
modern analytics information systems,
giving rise to relatively new machine
analysis concepts such as complex event
processing, full text search and analysis,
and even new ideas in presentation.
Analytics is increasingly used in edu-
cation, particularly at the district and
government office levels. However, the
complexity of student performance mea-
sures presents challenges when educa-
tors try to understand and use analytics
to discern patterns in student capability
ratings predict graduation likelihood, im-
prove chances of student success, etc. To
combat this, some analytics tools for edu-
cators adhere to an over-the-counter data
format (embedding labels, supplemental
documentation, and a help system, and
making key package/display and content
decisions) to improve educators under-
standing and use of the analytics being
displayed.
Another emerging challenge is the
dynamic regulatory needs. As can be
appreciated in the banking industry, fu-
ture capital adequacy needs are likely to
make even smaller banks adopt internal
risk models. In such cases, cloud com-
puting and open source can help smaller
banks to adopt risk analytics and support
branch level monitoring by applying pre-
dictive analytics.
Analytics & Dashboards
As we view it, the pyramid illustration is
the very foundation of analytics and the
organization of the data gathered via an-
alytics methodologies can be a significant
management tool once this knowledge
is placed into one of many possible
dashboards.
So what is a Business analytics, how
does it work and who benefits from the
results? Business analytics refers to the
skills, technologies, practices for continu-
ous repetitive exploration and investi-
gation of past business performance to
gain insight and drive business planning.
Business analytics focuses on develop-
ing new insights and understanding of
business performance based on data and
statistical methods. In contrast, business
intelligence traditionally focuses on using
a consistent set of metrics to both mea-
sure past performance and steer business
planning, which is also based on data and
statistical methods.
Business analytics makes extensive
use of statistical analysis, including ex-
planatory and predictive modeling, and
fact-based management to drive decision
making. It is therefore closely related to
management science. Analytics may be
used as input for human decisions or may
drive fully automated decisions. Business
intelligence is querying, reporting, and
online analytical processing .
In other words, querying, reporting,
and OLAP can answer critical questions .
. . what happened, how many, how often,
where the problem is, and what actions
are needed. Business analytics can answer
questions like why is this happening, what
if these trends continue, what will happen
next (that is, predict), what is the best that

After being processed and analyzed, the data
is used to provide the basis for models or algo-
rithms to measure and forecast the performance
of coatings and other materials.
Ships and installations such as offshore oil
and gas rigs and wind turbine are particularly
suitable for the application of data-gathering
equipment on machinery and structures. As a

result marine coatings, such as those for com-
bating corrosion and fouling, are among the
first coatings to be subjected to Big Data moni-
toring schemes.
Consequently there have been an increasing
number of performance monitoring services
companies offering different auditing and data
analytics systems. As a result the shipping sec-
tor, including coatings producers as well as
monitoring operators and classification soci-
eties have been calling for a single interna-
tional standard.
If we want to become more environmen-
tally friendly in the maritime sector we need
standards based on a common understanding
on how to measure a range of values, said Till
Braun, market development manager in fleet
performance management, DNV GL, Oslo,
Norway, which provides a classification servic-
es as well as a separate performance monitoring
services operation for shipping.

An international standard on hull and
propeller performance ISO 19030 is
currently coming into force. It looks
likely to be followed by other standards
on performance measurement systems for
other sections of ships and for marine in-
stallations. The standard itself will also
be constantly improved so that perfor-
mance criteria will become tighter.
The introduction of the standard
by the Geneva-based International
Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)
shows now much the trend to exploiting
Big Data to apply uniform quality speci-
fications to coatings and similar products
is gathering pace.
There is growing pressure for im-
provements in energy performance in
particular by improving the quality and
maintenance of hulls and propellers.
Around 10 percent of the world shipping
fleets costs and greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions stems from poor hull and pro-
peller performance with the main culprits
being biofouling and mechanical damage,
according to the Marine Environment
Protection Committee (MEPC), a branch
of the United Nations International
Maritime Organisation (IMO).
Owners and operators of ships see Big
Data as an opportunity to raise the en-
ergy efficiency of vessels in order to meet
targets for both energy consumption and
for CO2 emissions.
Classification organizations, which
audit ships to categorize their quality and
efficiency for insurance and other pur-
poses, are wanting to take advantage of
the rising amount of data on the perfor-
mance of vessels, especially in areas like
anti-corrosion.
Coatings companies and performance
monitoring specialists have been intro-
ducing monitoring systems with different
levels of data detail.
AkzoNobel, for example, launched
four years ago its Intertrac service for
helping ship owners and operators to
measure the energy consumption and
CO2 emissions of their vessels with an
emphasis on the performance of anti-
fouling coatings of which it is a producer.
This was based on data from a satellite-
controlled Automatic Identification
System (AIS) for tracking vessels. Then

last year the company brought out
Intertrac Vision, a scheme which provides
more detailed data.
AIS data provides the time and loca-
tion of the vessel only, explained Michael
Hindmarsh, AkzoNobels Intertrac Vision
manager. We align this position data
with other databases some of which use
Big Data to calculate the fouling chal-
lenge and fouling risk of a vessel trading
in that location at that point in time.
On the other hand Intertrac Vision
uses algorithms that has been developed
from 3.5 billion datapoints to predict the
hull performance. It is not a hull perfor-
mance analysis tool, said Hindmarsh.
The prediction algorithms take into
account the fouling challenge, the ves-
sel type, the vessel activity, average hull
roughness and fouling control perfor-
mance. There is no requirement for the
crew to collect data.
DNV GL, which said it is a market
leader among service providers in Big
Data-scale monitoring of ships perfor-
mances, runs a scheme under which a
ships crew do the data gathering.
(What is measured ) includes data
on changing environmental conditions
to which vessels are exposed, such as
wind, different temperatures, degrees of
calmness and hull roughness, salt content,
and chemical properties of sea water,
said Braun. All of these factors can in-
fluence the demand for power by a ship.
A ships crew should be recording at
least 3-4 data values per day, he contin-
ued. This is equivalent to using Big Data
to make comparisons of the effectiveness
of different coatings on different vessel
types when exposed to different environ-
mental conditions.
With anti-corrosion coatings, the
trend has been to move on site some of
the sophisticated testing done in labora-
tories with imaging and related equip-
ment. A major means of recording on site
data is through sensors. But a big chal-
lenge is that the sensors themselves can
become corroded.
The ISO started the procedure of
drawing up a hull and propeller per-
formance standard three years ago
with Svend Soeyland of Nordic Energy
Research acting as convener of the
working group and Geir Axel Oftedahl
of Jotun project manager.
Over 50 experts and observers from
shipping companies and associations,
ship builders, coatings producers, per-
formance monitoring companies and
NGOs participated in seven meetings of
the group. A ballot on the final standard
took place in March.
This standard is intended for all
stakeholders that are striving to apply
a rigorous, yet practical way of measur-
ing the changes in hull and propeller
performance, Soeyland and Oftedahl
told the Hull Performance & Insight
Conference 2016 in Italy earlier this
year in a joint paper.
It will also provide much needed
transparency for buyers and sellers of
technologies and services intended to im-
prove hull and propeller performance,
they added. Finally, it will make it easier
for the same buyers and sellers to enter
into performance based-contracts.
The scope of ISO 19030 includes
sensor requirements, measurement
procedures and methods of calculat-
ing performance indicators in main-
tenance, repair and retrofit activities.
One of the indicators is comparisons
between the performance of, for exam-
ple, coatings at different times between
dry docking maintenance.
Ship owners and operators have been
already preparing supply and other con-
tracts based on the new standard, ac-
cording to Soeyland and Oftedahl. But
many of them will have first to be in a
position to adopt performance monitor-
ing systems.
Only a minority of ship owners and
operators are using Big Data-type perfor-
mance monitoring systems, said Braun.
We estimate that around 80 to 85 per-
cent are not into performance manage-
ment yet; five percent of global fleet is
using our Navigator Insight/ECO Insight,
eight percent are using the systems of nu-
merous competitors and three percent
are doing the monitoring themselves.
With data standards likely to be become
even stricter as Big Data becomes more
prevalent, it could be some time before per-
formance monitors system are applied by
a large proportion of world shipping. CW

of the Italian firm Co.ver.lit. Ltd.
He said the company works with pro-
ducers of metallic packaging -beverage espe-
cially in the food industry such as aluminum
screw caps, boxes, aerosol cans or trays.
These are some of the people we ex-
pected to meet the event and connect with
them, make contacts and explore oppor-
tunities in the African market, he said.

tive/marine and vehicle refinishes, told
delegates that a recent study by the com-
pany shows increasing demand for sol-
ventborne direct to metal (DTM) coatings
for the agriculture, construction, earth-
moving (and transportation) equipment
(ACET) segment to increase productiv-
ity and thus cost efficiency.
The solventborne DTM coatings avail-
able in the global market today, he said,
have failed to meet the needs of ACET us-
ers because the products lack in corro-
sion and humidity resistance.
He said the global market for solvent-
borne DTM coatings is currently being
driven by the demand for high perfor-
mance solutions that offer characteris-

he housing market in the United States, as well as inter-
nationally, remained strong through 2016 and is expected
to continue growing through at least 2017. An increase in
renovations on existing homes and construction of new homes,
particularly in the higher end of the real estate market, will con-
tribute to an already strong exterior architectural coatings market.
A Strong Global Market
According to Grand View Research, the global exterior coatings
market is expected to reach 39.04 billion by 2024. Researchers

market growth. A key factor here is pricing and eco-friendliness.
The introduction of green coatings coupled with the in-
creasing usage of nanocoatings will create immense opportuni-
ties for growth over the next eight years, researchers found.
Key findings of the report suggest that primer is expected to
witness high revenue gains at a CAGR of 6.4 percent from 2016
to 2024, as it acts as a protector and leveler for other products
including enamel and emulsions. The revenue generated by the
use of exterior architectural coatings in the non-residential sec-
tor was valued at $8.20 billion in 2015 and is expected to wit-
ness rise on account of growing FMCG, IT, telecom and retail
sector in MEA and Asia Pacific. Moreover, rapid industrializa-
tion, increasing FDI and government infrastructure spending
will promote market growth, the report states.
Additional key findings indicate that the global demand for
exterior architectural coatings was 7.12 million tons in 2015
and is expected to show high gains in light of rapid infrastruc-
tural development in India, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Indonesia
and the U.S.
Furthermore, alkyd resin will witness high volume growth at
a CAGR of 5.3 percent from 2016 to 2024.
Growing usage of alkyd resins in light of their high durabil-
ity and superior gloss is expected to stimulate industry growth.
Furthermore, rising consumption in outdoor applications owing
to its low cost along with high-temperature resistance will fuel
its demand over the forecast period.
North America accounted for 22.6 percent of the global
volume share in 2015 and is expected to witness significant
gains in light of rising reconstruction activities in the U.S. cou-
pled with infrastructure development in Canada and Mexico.
Furthermore, the implementation of the National Infrastructure
Program 2014 - 2018 (NIP) in Mexico is expected to promote
the product growth over the forecast period.
Latin America is projected to witness substantial revenue
growth at a CAGR of 6.4 percent from 2016 to 2024 owing to
the presence of various participants including BASF, Sherwin-
Williams and AkzoNobel. Increasing government efforts to off-
set Brazils housing deficit, and provide low-interest rates for
housing will stimulate product demand over the forecast pe-
riod, researchers found.
Customer Demand
Dan Passinault, PPG, director, Innovation, Products and
Commercialization, said that consumers are looking for paints
and stains that offer high quality, durability, convenience, easy
application and pleasing aesthetics without high VOCs or
strong odors.
Passinault added, In the architectural coatings industry, low-
VOC is no longer a specialty product offering, it is a must-have
option for all brands in the space. In a crowded and competitive
landscape, it is important to know how these products differ, un-
derstand the standards for low- and zero-VOC certification and
how they impact job specifications. The main differentiator in the
market is the classification as low-VOC vs. zero-VOC. Previously,

painters were forced to make major sacrifices with product appli-
cation to achieve lower VOC levels. However, low- and zero-VOC
products have come a long way and now apply similarly to regular
paints in coverage and spreadability. In addition LEED V4 is now a
primary requirement for most commercial new construction proj-
ects, which calls for a higher level of understanding and commit-
ment to sustainability in product offerings.
As the low- and zero-VOC paint space progresses, we find
that consumers will be looking at additional ways to be environ-
mentally friendly, such as using recycled paints or paints made
from bio-renewable resources, or participating in Paint Care
programs, he concluded.
Consumers of exterior architectural coatings are looking
for products with similar properties as interior coatings, ac-
cording to Judy Lynes, press representative for Dunn-Edwards.
Customers are looking for performance attributes that paint-
ing contractors are looking for with interior paints: excellent
sheen uniformity, touch-up and blends well, good job hiding
(good opacity), and ease of application.
According to Lynes, Dunn-Edwards offers a wide array of
paints that are environmentally friendly in order to meet cus-
tomer demand. All Dunn-Edwards paints bearing the EG Free
logo, are EG-FREE AND TAC/HAP-FREE. Ethylene Glycol (EG),
a solvent often used in water-based paints, is listed as a Toxic
Air Contaminant (TAC) and Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP). In
1983, we were the first in the industry to voluntarily replace EG
with propylene glycol, a non-toxic alternative generally regarded
as safe by the FDA. Also, every Dunn-Edwards product with the
EG-Free logo is free of any other TAC or HAP, too.
New Products
This year, the PPG Paints brand introduced the next generation
of the <50 grams per liter volatile organic compound (VOC)
version of BREAK-THROUGH! interior and exterior water-
borne acrylic paint. One of the PPG Paints brands most popular
products, Break-Through! paint offers a unique and versatile
technology that provides excellent adhesion, hardness and block
resistance to a variety of residential and commercial surfaces as
well as quick drying time, Passinault said.
PPGs Olympic Paints & Stains brand provided consumers
with the opportunity to extend staining season, introducing
Olympic Maximum Stain + Sealant in One with Weather-Ready
application. The products features enable homeowners to stain
when they want to, even if the weather isnt perfect.
Additionally, the Pittsburgh Paints & Stains brand in March
2016 announced its launch of the new Paramount super pre-
mium line of interior and exterior paints, as well as a Paramount
exterior stain line at Menards. These innovative products marry
technology, strength and style to offer the most advanced pro-
tection and beautiful, lasting color.
Dunn-Edwards has several products for the exterior coat-
ings market, including Aristoshield, Spartashield and Acri-Hues.
Aristoshield is an ultra-premium interior/exterior ultra-low
VOC enamel formulated with advanced water-based urethane
alkyd technology for an oil like finish. It is ideal for use on high

Colors of the Year, 2017

In addition to the need for high-quality, environmentally-friend-
ly paint and coatings products, consumers also have to like what
they see. Choosing paint colors for ones home can be a time-
consuming and very personal process. Generally speaking, peo-
ple want to acknowledge trends without giving the impression
that they are following a script. To help consumers find the right
palette for their homes, every year leading paint companies an-
nounce their color of the year, color trends and palettes.
According to Dee Schlotter, PPGs senior color marketing
manager, after seeing its presence on fashion runways and in
the hospitality industry over the past year or so, one of the main
trends consumers can expect to see is an increased usage of a
grayed-off violet in home dcor and in paint colors.
In keeping with consumers ever-expanding mindsets and
the blending of many conventional definitions of male/female,
work/play, young/old, and traditional/modern, indoor/outdoor
2017 will usher in moody, chameleon-like shades that blend
calming, introspective hues with the sense of luxury typically
associated with violet.
PPG Paints brands grayed-off Color of the Year Violet
Verbena perfectly embodies this innovative mix of sultriness
and serenity, while Olympic paints Cloudberry offers similar
minimalism encapsulated in a rich, elegant plum hue. Glidden
paints Byzantine Blue is another great example of chameleon-
like color, as it appears to be grayer when paired with dark neu-
trals yet looks more blue or purple when partnered with white
colors. These trends represent a manifestation of the increas-
ingly bohemian consumer lifestyle that places a high emphasis
on spiritual exploration and introspective thinking.
In keeping with this trend, Benjamin Moore recently an-
nounced its highly anticipated Color of the Year 2017 Shadow
2117-30, a rich, royal amethyst. The company also unveiled
Color Trends 2017, a corresponding palette consisting of deep,
saturated hues.
Allusive and enigmatic, Shadow is a master of ambiance.
It is a color that calls to mind a past, yet it can also make a
contemporary, color-confident statement, said Ellen ONeill,

as well as a newfound level of color confidence in deeper hues
among design professionals and consumers. The inspirational
Color Trends 2017 color card illustrates the use of color in ways
that celebrate how shadow and light travel throughout a space
during the course of a day. The Color Trends 2017 palette in-
cludes a total of 23 colors.
Sherwin-Williams recently announced Poised Taupe (SW
6039) as its color of the year. According to the company, this
color creates a cozy lifestyle and brings a sense of sanctuary
into our homes. It diffuses the stresses of the world outside our
doors so much so that we feel restored and in balance when
we walk across our threshold.
The Danes have a word to describe this feeling, hygge (pro-
nounced hue-gah), which loosely translates as cozy, or creating
a sense of coziness and warmth. The soft glow of candle-light, a
toasty drink, and the company of family and friends is certainly
hygge, but this feeling comes from creating the right atmosphere.

ors. The companys 2017 palette, a curated collection of livable,

The Comfortable palette features soft, tranquil and versa-
tile colors. They work well for small spaces and help open up
rooms that do not get a lot of natural light. Recently, pastels
have transformed from sweet to mineral matte shades. Light

ustainability is currently one of the most discussed sub-
ject matters in our industry, yet arguably one of the least
understood. The never-ending interpretations of the word
tend to fog the actual meaning, leaving many confused on what
achieving sustainability truly looks like.
The attention given to this topic, spanning both back-end
developers like, architects and coating manufacturers, and
front-end users like building owners and tenants, has not
gone unnoticed.
According to the U.S. Environment Protection Agency and
the U.S. Green Building Council, construction and operation of
all buildings in the United States results in the consumption of
72 percent of electricity resources, 29 percent of total energy
used, 30 percent of CO2 production and a 12 degrees increase

numbers that we can all agree should be lowered, and we as a
whole are coming together to make the change across all spaces
of construction and design.
Given the extent to which buildings affect the environment,
it is important that coating manufacturers set an example and
continue to produce more sustainable products and technolo-
gies. Lets take a look at a few different sectors within the indus-
try to see how each is utilizing sustainable materials and what it
can mean for architectural development as a whole.
Sustainability in Education
Education is what feeds advancement and progress for our fu-
ture, providing the foundation that young people across the
country need in order to flourish in their professional and per-
sonal lives. Educational facilities and environments provide
these formative experiences and have an influence on all who
participate within them.
The focus on sustainability has made its way into the edu-
cation division as schools across the country are aging, becom-
ing outdated and going through renovations, or simply being
rebuilt. During this process, those at the forefront are look-
ing for ways that their schools can better serve local student

bodies with a more sustainable approach. Some environmen-

tally and resource-friendly features that educational facilities
are implementing include natural lighting, the use of reusable
or recycled materials, and metal wall and roof panels to im-
prove energy efficiency.
Specifically for metal roof panels, sustainable coating formu-
lations have been improved to increase building resistance to
the negative effects of ultraviolet rays and provide dirt and stain
prevention, which can increase the lifespan of a building.
A great example of this focus on sustainability can be seen in
the expansions of the Odyssey Elementary School and Kankakee
Community College.

Sustainability in Health Care
The health care industry pursues to protect, restore and enhance
public health. As a result, it is important for health care organi-
zations to adopt an approach to design, construct and maintain
facilities that support healthy environments for their patients
and surrounding communities. This is where our industry can
help, as the use of sustainable materials can drastically enhance
a buildings overall health.
The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in
Connecticut placed a focus on sustainable design measures when
undergoing its restructure. The laboratory focused on energy ef-
ficiency, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), and site conserva-
tion. They also used metal panels finished in a durable coating
that provides the exterior with added protection and will extend
the life of the building. The use of metal panels helped further
the buildings sustainability goals as the metal material itself is
made of recycled products. The coating applied then helps to
protect the panels, conserving the product and ensuring that
they will not need to be replaced in a few years, consequently
requiring the use of additional building materials.
As an extension to the Childrens Hospital of The Kings
Daughters and part of the Sentara Princess Anne Medical cam-
pus, the Princess Anne Office Building was constructed in 2008
to provide medical offices, an outpatient surgery center, labora-
tories, and a radiology suite to support the organizations grow-
ing needs. Due to the buildings proximity to the Atlantic ocean,
the Princess Anne Office Building was designed with an ocean-
themed motif that extends all the way to its sloping metal roof
that was constructed to emulate the cresting ocean. The metal
roof was finished in a protective solar reflective coating that en-
hances the energy-efficiency of the building, in turn helping to
lower cooling costs and conserve resources.

Sustainability in Public Buildings
The year 2015 was documented as the warmest in record. In to-
tal, the 10 hottest years in history have all occurred since 1998.
The efforts of reducing energy use and carbon emissions are
crucial to managing this shift. In public buildings, especially
located in compact urban areas, a growing issue occurs when
additional energy is used for cooling because this usage adds
to the problem of urban heat island effect. Urban heat island
effect refers to the risk of increased temperatures in urban areas
relative to the surrounding rural or natural areas due to the high
concentration of heat-absorbing surfaces. For example, temper-
atures in urban areas have increased up to 12 degrees above the
normal temperature in nearby rural areas.
A main contributor to this issue also comes from the fact that at
least 20 percent of the land surface in most urban areas is covered by
roofing, and traditional roofing materials absorb 85 to 95 percent of
the suns heat energy. As part of the solution, the need for more prod-
ucts that reduce the amount of energy we consume and place more
emphasis on their environmental effects has grown. The global green
coatings market has seen an increase in demand in recent years and
is forecasted to grow 5.1 percent annually through 2020.
The coatings industry has seen a similar need for helping to
solve the urban heat island effect and has worked to formulate
coatings with the highest Solar Reflective (SR) values to develop
a solution. Solar reflective coatings are formulated to reflect the
suns infrared energy, which in turn reduces the amount of in-
frared light absorbed by an exterior surface. In consequence,
this helps to combat the urban heat island effect and can result
in lower energy consumption for a building, and in turn a city.
For example, the Polk Penguin Conservation Center in the
Detroit Zoo utilized solar reflective coatings to help achieve a
resembled look of an Antarctic iceberg. With the goal to reflect
a penguins natural icy habitat, the manufacturers installed dia-
mond-shaped metal panels and applied a unique solar reflective
pearlescent coating, providing the penguin center with a beauti-
ful and energy-saving exterior. The coating contains 70 percent

One homeowner living in the California
countryside was looking to both downsize
as well as create a truly sustainable home.
Driven by these two goals, the owner de-
signed and constructed a net-zero metal
home, using efficient technologies like solar
panels and geothermal heating and cool-
ing throughout the house. He also chose
insulated panels for the walls and roof,
which provided an R-value (the capacity
of an insulated material to resist heat flow)
of 42 well exceeding Californias build-
ing standards. In addition, a solar reflec-
tive coating was applied to the metal roof,
further contributing to the homes energy
efficiency. The coating also helps with the
longevity of the homes appearance, as its
resistant to humidity, fading, chalking,
abrasions and most chemicals.
Metal roofs are one sustainable prac-
tice making its way from the commercial
realm into residential spaces. Alone, the
use of a metal roof can contribute to a
more sustainable building, but when
finished in a coating that contains solar
reflective pigments, the benefits are multi-

director at Grace Matthews, a middle-market investment bank providing merger,
acquisition and corporate finance advisory services for chemical companies. Hinz offered
his insight into the global adhesives and sealants market

Coatings World: What is the size of the global adhesives and
sealants market?
Andy Hinz: Most estimates for the size of the global adhesives
and sealants market range from $40-50 billion. Adhesives ac-
count for approximately 90 percent of that total, with sealants
making up the balance. In terms of geography, Asia Pacific,
North & South America, and EMEA each represent roughly
one-third of market demand. Growth in the Asia Pacific region
has significantly outpaced that experienced in the Americas and
EMEA in recent years, and this trend is expected to continue in
the near term.
CW: How has the economy affected the market for adhesives
and sealants?
Hinz: Adhesives and sealants volume has increased around 4
percent annually in recent years, supported by a steady recovery
in major end markets such as construction and automotive. In
the U.S., single family housing starts have been growing at a
double-digit annual rate since the end of the recession, while
non-residential construction spending has been growing more
than 6 percent annually since bottoming in 2011. Growth in
sales of automotive adhesives and sealants has been supported
by underlying strength in vehicle sales coupled with ongoing

efforts to improve fuel efficiency through weight reduction, as
metal components are replaced with composites that can be
bonded with adhesives.
A growing middle class in Asia-Pacific (particularly China)
has generated strong demand for adhesives and sealants,
while Europe has been relatively weaker due to a more chal-
lenging economic backdrop.
On the cost side, falling oil prices have contributed to
lower costs for some raw materials, offering a tailwind in
recent quarters for many adhesive and sealant formulators.
However, many formulators are expecting raw material pric-
es to begin firming in the months ahead as oil prices have
rebounded from their early 2016 lows. Key commodity raw
materials used in adhesives, such as ethylene, propylene, and
vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), have been moving significant-
ly higher in recent months.
CW: What consumer markets offer the most opportunity for
growth?
Hinz: The engineering adhesives market, a $12 billion market
that includes adhesives for electronics, energy, and automotive/
transportation applications, is rapidly growing and has be-
come a key focus area for formulators. Several of the major
adhesive formulators, including H.B. Fuller, have made recent

acquisitions in this market to enhance their position.
The ongoing recovery in the North American construction
market also represents a source of strength for both adhesives
and sealants.
Geographically, emerging markets represent a major growth
opportunity for formulators due to increasing levels of indus-
trialization and consumption. A growing middle class in these
geographies should drive growth in end market such as packag-
ing, hygiene, and assembly.
CW: Who are the major players and how do they keep their
competitive edge?
Hinz: The top ten adhesive and sealant formulators, which ac-
count for almost half of the global market, include Henkel, H.B.
Fuller, Bostik, Sika, 3M, Dow and Royal. Operating in a high-
ly-competitive market, major formulators maintain their edge
through both sales-based and cost-focused efforts.
On the product and sales side, companies are investing in
innovation/R&D, brand building, and fostering strong rela-
tionships with customers to support their competitive position.
For example, Henkel spent more than $300 million in 2015
on R&D in its Adhesive Technologies segment, and generates
roughly 30 percent of its adhesive sales from products launched
over the past five years. Another example is Bostik, which is

in the process of rationalizing its portfolio of 40 brands into a
global Bostik brand along with several local brands. Bostik is
combining this rationalization effort with enhanced marketing
to build awareness around the Bostik brand.
Cost-focused efforts include improving manufacturing and
supply chain efficiencies and building scale through capital in-
vestments and M&A. As an example, H.B. Fuller recently set
a target of reducing manufacturing costs by 200 basis points
between 2015 and 2020 through a greater focus on sourcing ef-
forts, manufacturing excellence, and infrastructure investments.
The successful formulators are incredibly savvy when it comes
to balancing growth investments with cost management in or-
der to maximize long-term profitability and competitiveness.
World Adhesives & Sealants Market is Expected to Reach $66,876 Million by 2022Allied
Market Research
According to a new report published by Allied Market Research,
titled, World Adhesives & Sealants Market: Opportunities and
Forecasts, 20152022, the adhesives and sealants market is ex-
pected to reach $66,876 million by 2022, growing at a CAGR of
3.7 percent from 2016 to 2022. Water-based adhesives segment
held about 40 percent share of the global adhesives market in
2015, owing to its viability as an alternative choice to conven-
tional solvent-based adhesive products.
Factors driving the overall adhesives and sealants mar-
ket are increasing automobile production and surging de-
mand for packaging material. The automotive industry is
gradually replacing welding activities of engine parts as-
sembly with adhesives and sealants products to reduce
the vehicle weight, which in turn increases fuel efficiency.
Strong growth in infrastructure activity is also expected to
drive the growth of adhesives and sealants market. Rapid
urbanization and population growth in developing coun-
tries combined with rebounding construction activities in
developed markets of Europe and the U.S. is fueling the
demand for adhesives & sealants products. Stringent regu-
lations on volatile organic chemical (VOC) emission is likely
to restrain the market, as solvent-based adhesives (vinyl
acetate, resins, rubber and others) have the tendency to
react with nitrogen oxides present in the atmosphere to
form ozone, which poses a health threat by causing respira-
tory problems. The increasing popularity of environment-
friendly adhesives over traditional solvent-based and wa-
ter-based adhesives acts as an opportunity for the market
growth.
Water-based adhesives segment is expected to continue
its lead throughout the analysis period. This is owing to in-
kling of major end-user industries namely packaging and
construction toward water-based adhesive products; as sol-
vent-based adhesive products are highly prone to volatile
organic compound (VOC) emissions. Other factors attribut-
ing to its growth are its user-friendly nature and safety in

CW: How have VOC and other environmental regulations af-
fected the market for adhesives and sealants?
Hinz: The U.S. EPA and other organizations have worked dili-
gently to institute measures designed to reduce the impact of
VOCs and other potentially hazardous materials on the environ-
ment, workers in manufacturing environments, and end users.
The ongoing conversion of solvent-based adhesives to water-
based adhesives for certain applications is an example of this
trend. Recent actions like the passage of TSCA reform by the
U.S. House and Senate will serve to formalize efforts to review,
test, and regulate chemicals used in the adhesives and sealants
market. While the underlying health and environmental benefits
of these reform measures are hard to dispute, the higher costs

toxic elements and hazardous organic elements, thus fulfill-
ing the regulations. In the year 2015, the silicone-based seal-

associated with compliance and raw materials (when reformula-
tions are required) are real and can be substantial particularly
for smaller companies. Although resistance to change, by both
end users and manufacturers, and the cost of compliance may
hinder the rate of adoption somewhat, more stringent environ-
mental regulations are a way of life for industry participants
and will need to be continually addressed.
However, increasing environmental regulations are not
always viewed as a hurdle by the industry.
For example, more stringent fuel economy regulations are
driving the trend of vehicle lightweighting, which directly ben-
efits adhesive and sealant manufacturers. The regulatory envi-
ronment also is forcing investment in R&D and new technology
development, which should benefit the industry over the long
term. More and more companies are committing to sustain-
ability efforts and social responsibility practices, and are taking
a proactive approach when it comes to regulations.
CW: Have there been any major company news, such as ac-
quisitions, joint ventures, in the adhesives and sealants in-
dustry lately?
Hinz: The industry has undergone a continuous period of con-
solidation in recent years, with more than 100 adhesive and seal-
ant formulator acquisitions (globally) reported since the start of
2014. Corporate balance sheets remain strong, private equity

groups are flush with cash, and relatively inexpensive credit is
available all which have combined to create an extremely ro-
bust M&A environment. Beyond the major formulators, rel-
atively few adhesive and sealant companies have revenues in
excess of $100 million, leading most strategic buyers to pursue
smaller bolt-on acquisitions that provide access to new prod-
ucts, technologies, or geographies, with the added potential for
meaningful cost synergies.
Examples of recent transactions include Bostiks pur-
chase of Den Braven, which will significantly enhance
Bostiks position in the sealants market, and H.B. Fullers
acquisition of Cyberbond, which is well-aligned with H.B.
Fullers strategy to grow in the engineering adhesives mar-
ket. Royal Adhesives has continued its serial acquisition
strategy by completing three deals in the first half of 2016.
We expect deal activity to remain strong for the foreseeable
future, with major adhesive and sealant formulators taking
an active approach to M&A.CW

G
lobal seaborne trade continues to grow despite the cur-
rent economic difficulties facing many trading nations.
But it has been the shipping industry that has felt the
pinch most significantly. Thin margins are forcing vessel opera-
tors to search for efficiencies at every turn, which has encour-
aged owners and operators alike to carefully scrutinize every
aspect of their operations. Using innovative hull coatings to
save on fuel costs has been a major focus in recent years; the re-
sult is that owners and operators now look more strategically at
the coatings they use as a tool to increase operational efficiency.
Like shipping, the offshore sector is not faring well in light
of continuing low oil prices. Therefore, operators of complex
steel structures in the offshore environment, such as oil and gas
installations, must carefully consider their choice of protective
coating as a tool to manage operating and maintenance costs
and, therefore, enhance profitability.
Developing highly complex and technologically advanced
protective coatings that deliver the required efficiencies to these
specialized market segments raises a number of technical chal-
lenges for coatings providers.
Above the Waterline
Offshore structures are permanently exposed to highly saline and
corrosive conditions along with extremes of temperature and

physical stress; these factors present a unique set of challenges
for the coatings industry. Traditionally, inorganic zinc-rich coat-
ings (IOZs) such as zinc silicates have been the preferred primers
for these environments because of their enhanced anti-corro-
sive properties, with zinc epoxy coatings taking a back seat.
However, while IOZs exhibit superior anti-corrosion properties,
they tend to suffer from low mechanical strength and require
specific conditions for application. Because of this, an increasing
number of offshore installation operators are choosing a zinc
epoxy instead. But the problem here is that zinc epoxies require
a more regular re-coat which usually means taking the asset out
of service. Each system, therefore, has its limitations.
In both zinc silicates and zinc epoxies, the zinc acts as the
sacrificial element and corrodes instead of the iron to leave the
steel intact. This process - known as the galvanic effect - only
works if the zinc primer is able to transfer galvanic current. In
general, a normal zinc coating is around 60-80 microns thick
but it is only the first 20-30 microns of a traditional zinc epoxy
coating that delivers the galvanic protection. The epoxy resin
insulates the zinc particles causing them to lose their galvanic
properties. Even at high zinc loads, around 80% of the zinc is
too far away from the point of corrosion for it to be of any use.
Activated Zinc
As a coatings specialist, our challenge has been to activate more
of the zinc to improve the galvanic effect of the coating without
increasing the actual zinc content itself. Doing this ensures that
the zinc throughout the film is delivering anti-corrosion protec-
tion. Our solution was to introduce two new substances into the
primer - hollow glass spheres and a proprietary activator. The
combination of these new items, together with the optimum mix
of binders, pigments, fillers and additives ensures that the zinc is
activated throughout the coating.
In general, traditional zinc coatings are porous and so offer
little resistance to water. But with our new coating, as well as
significantly enhancing the galvanic effect, we also found that
our new activated zinc primer had a lower water permeability.
Once the zinc becomes activated, the resistance to water is in-
creased as it forms a layer of insoluble salts on the surface and
within the film the barrier effect. The benefits of such a barrier
within the marine environment where an installation is per-
manently immersed in water are significant and can provide
additional protection over the lifespan of the installation.
Its also important to note that water is not the only destruc-
tive force for installations operating offshore. In particularly
aggressive saltwater environments, chloride ions will penetrate
a protective coating to cause pitting corrosion. Our coating ef-
fectively captures these chloride ions by forming chloride-con-
taining salts around the hollow glass spheres. This significantly
delays the corrosive process as the chloride ions are trapped
within the coating and prevented from reaching the steel surface
the inhibitor effect.
Avantguard Technology
These innovations have been captured in a new Hempel coating

technology called Avantguard. This has, in our view, redefined
anti-corrosion coatings as Avantguard delivers a triple protec-
tion. It exhibits greater galvanic activity by increasing the ac-
tivation of the zinc; it creates an inorganic salt barrier against
water and other corrosive species; and it acts as a chloride scav-
enger by capturing chloride ions.
Offshore structures are often exposed to severe mechanical
stress and fluctuations in temperature which can cause a zinc
primer to crack as the steel contracts and expands. The new
Avantguard technology compensates for this through its unique
self-healing properties. The hollow glass spheres within the
primer absorb much of the energy from the cracking process
to prevent initial cracks from widening and developing. In ad-
dition, the sub products formed by the zinc activation process
will occupy the space left by micro-cracks and prevent them
from developing into something more serious. This significantly
reduces rust creep and ensures that the coating maintains its
anti-corrosive performance for much longer.
In terms of the application process, an Avantguard coating
may be applied at high temperatures and levels of humidity
without blistering. And, with a re-coat interval of one hour at
20 C, it is 50 percent quicker to dry than most zinc-rich epoxy
primers at similar temperatures. Its high dry film thickness is not
susceptible to cracking which means that operators neednt be
overly concerned when applying to welds or in corners where
over-application tends to occur.
Efficiency Gains
The advantages of utilizing this innovative technology in aggres-
sive environments are significant. Owners of offshore structures
can increase the lifetime of their assets and reduce maintenance
requirements and costs. This is particularly relevant for hard-to-
access areas that require a shut-down to maintain. For contrac-
tors, having confidence in their choice of coating allows them to
offer enhanced warranties for the equipment and structures they
supply. Avantguards wide tolerance allows contactors to touch-
up and repair a coating on site. For fabricators, Avantguard is
easier to apply than other similar primers and enjoys a shorter re-
coat interval which improves speed and efficiency. All in all, this
new technology has redefined anti-corrosion coatings by reducing
rust creep, enhancing resistance to corrosion, improving crack re-
sistance and heightening tolerance to varying climatic conditions.
Below the Waterline
Ship owners are keen for their vessels to maintain a smooth
and foul-free hull. Fouling increases the drag of the hull which,
in turn, increases the fuel consumption and associated harmful
emission. The right coating keeps the hull smooth thus minimiz-
ing the need for cleaning operations or premature docking of
the ship.
The antifouling market is dominated by conventional anti-
fouling coatings that rely on biocides to control hull fouling.
This is traditionally achieved by the addition of cuprous ox-
ide as a pigment, combined with organic co-biocides, in order
to deliver the required biocide activity to fight off the entire

span of marine-based biofouling organisms. Conversely, foul-
ing release systems are generally biocide-free. They are based on
polydimethylsiloxane, known as PDMS or silicone, that mini-
mizes the strength of adhesion of the fouling organism, allow-
ing for release during the operation of the vessel. The problem
here is that PDMS coatings have limited effect at low operat-
ing speeds. This is particularly relevant in todays market where
ships can be idle for longer periods or are steaming more slowly
to save on fuel costs.
Resistance to Fouling
The way around this is to combine a PDMS coating with a
hydrogel to deliver improved resistance at slower speeds or
when the vessel is idle. A hydrogel is a layer of water trapped
in or around a network of hydrophilic polymers. An organism
wanting to attach to a hydrogel-covered hull will first need to
recognize if the surface is suitable for settlement. As the hull is
covered in bound water, most organisms will simply not recog-
nize it as a suitable surface and find a home elsewhere. A water
bound surface will also require the organism to expel the water
before it can apply its own adhesive direct to the hull, and most
organisms dont have the energy to do this.
Actiguard Technology
Moving the concept on, we are now combining the hydrogel
layer with biocide to form a biocide-activated hydrogel layer
a technology called Actiguard. Here, the hydrogel traps the
biocide during its diffusion out of the film and this increases the
surface concentration of biocide. It thereby prolongs the reten-
tion of biocide on the surface enabling Actiguard to remain ex-
tremely effective with lower amounts of biocide. Because of this,
an Actiguard coating is able to release biocide in a stable and

controlled manner for vessel speeds
(or currents) exceeding 0.1 knot
and upwards. This is significant for
a ship owner as it means the hull re-
mains protected even when the ves-
sel is idle, or is slow steaming. From
an environmental perspective, the
stable release of biocide irrespective
of speed means that less biocide is
released into the oceans when trav-
elling at higher speeds.
The efficient use of biocides al-
lows for a very low pigment and
filler volume concentration; they
also enjoy a low VOC content.
Low biocide content also ensures
the coating is smooth after applica-
tion, which is important for a vessel
to maximize its fuel efficiency and,
therefore, reduce operating costs.
Even if the hull suffers scratch-
ing, Actiguard offers a window of
defense and tests have shown that
Actiguard coatings will retain their protection levels for at least
22 months when scratched.
Performance Consistency
Efficiency is paramount in the current shipping markets and
tests of Actiguard technology show that its fouling defense prop-
erties remain effective for vessels that switch from slow to fast
steaming and that remain idle for periods up to 120 days. This
is particularly interesting for larger container vessels and tank-
ers that, for example, may wish to increase speed on one route
to meet schedules and slow steam on the other to achieve extra
fuel savings. It also means an operator can lay up a vessel for up
to four months without having to clean the hull. Additionally,
fuel savings of 6 percent on average, across the entire docking
interval, have been achieved which is significantly higher than
conventional self-polishing technologies. Further efficiencies are
gained due to the extended re-coating interval which reduces the
time a vessel spends in dry-dock.
Galvanizing Change
Tough markets and challenging physical conditions are encour-
aging those who operate in such environments to demand more
from their coatings provider. This provides an opportunity to
push harder and develop ever more sophisticated coatings solu-
tions for the benefit of our customers, and the environments
in which they operate. Contemporary coatings must offer the
highest levels of protection as well as opportunities to enhance
efficiencies and control costs. In turn, as coatings providers, we
can play a significant role in helping our customers develop their
operational capabilities. A heavy investment in continued R&D
will pay dividends in both quarters, and we will all benefit from
the ripples of change. CW

HELIATEK to Build
New Solar Film Plant

D
resden-based Heliatek, which is refining organic pho-
tovoltaic cells for its HeliaFilm, recently raised $88
million in mixed funding to increase its roll-to-roll
manufacturing capacity to one million square meters of film
per year. The company aims to promote use of its film in the
building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) market and in the au-
tomotive industry.
The new funding will yield a new 1.2m-wide roll-to-roll sys-
tem, apart from the existing 30cm line that has been in opera-
tion since 2012, producing 250nm thick flexible photovoltaic
film. The film is lightweight, flexible, and effective at harvesting
solar energy under low light conditions, yet is more stable under
higher temperatures that traditional silicon solar cells.
Among contributors to the funding were: fund lead innogy;
Engie; BNP Paribas; CEE Group; AQTON; BASF; eCAPITAL;
HTGF; TUDAG and Wellington Partners. The total included a
loan of 20 million from the European Investment Bank under
its EU Finance for Innovators (InnovFin) program, which is a
joint initiative by the EIB and the European Commission.
The company reports that it has achieved a 13.2 percent
cell efficiency from a multi-junction cell with three absorber
layers in lab, compared with current silicon solar cell effi-
ciencies in the high 20 percent range. Heliatek now produces
solar film at an 8.2 percent efficiency, and aims to boost the
efficiency by roughly two percent per year until 2018, when
large scale production is planned. The company is developing
molecules that absorb ultraviolet light, to be included in it
film along with molecules it has already developed to absorb
infrared wave lengths.
The production process involves vacuum deposition guid-
ed by laser in a plastic film, which is manufactured as a roll-
to-roll product. The film is comprised of homogenous layers
of small-molecule oligomers combined at low temperatures
without the use of solvents, which printing processes require.
Heliatek said that it deposits one gram of organic material
per square meter, which makes it a low cost solar competitor.
Company CEO Thibaud Le Seguillon said in an interview
after the new funding, We know we are going to be cop-
ied but we want to make it difficult for friendly competition.
The only way we are going to keep being the world leader is
through R&D.
Heliatek was created in July 2006 by the Technical
University of Dresden (IAPP) and the University of Ulm.
The companys founding brought together internationally
renowned expertise in the fields of organic optoelectronics
and organic oligomer synthesis. In 2011 the company won
the German Future Prize and in 2015, the World Economic
Forum anointed Heliatek as a Technology Pioneer.
According to a Bloomberg profile, Heliateks partner,
vTrium Energy, is implementing a showcase BIPV project in
Singapore that is also the largest BIPV project in Asia. The
project is funded and supported by Jurong Town Corp. (JTC)
and the Standards, Productivity and Innovation Board of
Singapore (Springs). Some 12 kW of HeliaFilm will be in-
stalled on different parts of JTCs Cleantech Park 1 and 2, as
well as along the Seletar Aerospace walkway. The film will be
installed in different colors on glass, on steel and on curved
polycarbonate, with several versions of transparency ranging
from full opaque to 15 percent or 30 percent transparency
levels. The Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore will
monitor the project. CW

BASF and Avantium Form Joint Venture

ASF and Avantium, a renew-
able chemistry company, have
formed a joint venture for the
production and marketing of furandi-
carboxylic acid (FDCA), which is
produced from renewable resources,
as well as the marketing of the new
polymer polyethylenefuranoate (PEF)
based on the new chemical building
block FDCA.
The aim of the JV named Synvina
with headquarters in Amsterdam, The
Netherlands, is to build up world-
leading positions in FDCA and PEF. It
is planned to invest a mid-three-digit
million euro sum to build a reference
plant with an annual capacity of up to
50,000 metric tons per year at BASFs
Verbund site in Antwerp, Belgium, and
to license the technology for industrial
scale production. For the production
of FDCA, Synvina will use the YXY
process developed by Avantium which
is based on fructose as renewable raw
material.
Industry experts consider bio-based
FDCA to be a promising platform
chemical and a building block for vari-
ous downstream products for differ-
ent applications, the company stated.
FDCA is used for the production of
PEF, a polyester suitable for food and
beverage packaging as well as for fi-
bers for carpets and textiles. For the
packaging industry, PEF offers better
characteristics in comparison to con-
ventional plastics, such as improved
barrier properties for gases like carbon
dioxide and oxygen. It also offers a
higher mechanical strength, thus thin-
ner PEF packaging can be produced
and fewer resources are required. PEF
is suitable for foil pouches, bottles for
carbonated and non-carbonated soft
drinks, water, dairy products, still and
sports drinks and alcoholic beverages
as well as personal and home care
products. Alongside the polyester PEF,
FDCA can be processed to polyamides

ment strategy for its high purity bio-
based n-butanol and acetone, as well

The company aims to market all 100
percent bio-based chemicals under
the brand BioPure. Green Biologics

who will use the mark on a wide range
of consumer and industrial products

slate of 100 percent bio-based prod-

isopropanol and other bio-based alco-

Clariant Bestows CleanTech
Award
Clariant, a global leader in spe-
cialty chemicals, presented the
CleanTech Award for outstanding
scientific achievements in the field of
Sustainable Chemistry as part of the
third Clariant Chemistry Day. This year,
the accolade was awarded throughout
Switzerland for the first time in col-
laboration with the University of Basel
and the Swiss Chemical Society. First
prize went to Luo Jingshan of the cole
Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne
(EPFL) for his accomplishments in
hydrogen fuel generation as a future

Fund VI have announced that American
Securities has partnered with manage-
ment and signed a definitive agreement
to acquire Chromaflo Technologies
Corp., a leading producer of propri-

The transaction is expected to close in
November 2016 and is subject to cus-
tomary closing conditions and regula-

We are currently seeking a National Sales Director to grow our sales with existing business, new
business and manage sales team. National Sales Director will be responsible for developing,
implementing and executing sales strategy/ies for business growth in United States.
Position Summary: Plan, direct growth and sales to large national/international and regional
customers through all channels.

Principle Responsibilities/expectations for this role include:

Achieve annual sales goals and targets. Achieve sales volumes and profitability objectives by
providing necessary leadership to the team.
Develop and implement annual sales plans. Proactively manage to generate new business
Supervise, manage and direct sales team for success and growth.
Liaison with customers and major accounts to help promote and sell products while
increasing sales and market share.
Establish relationships with customers and management and executives.
Have a progressive professional image with markets and customers in order to enhance ABIs
image and recognition of ABI products and services.
Equipment for Sale Ensure sales team is compliance with law and regulations.
Fully responsible for cost management of sales activities.

Trucks Shine at Shades of the Past

C
ars and trucks bearing PPG finishes earned several
key awards at the annual Shades of the Past Hot Rod
Roundup in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Car builders Zach
Ingram and Alan Johnson took two of the three prestigious
honors in the new Street Rodder Triple Crown of Rodding
consisting of Best Street Machine, Best Street Cruiser and Best
Street Rod awards and Kevin Simmons took the noteworthy
Best Finish award, while Dustin Foust and Jason Graham each
earned Top 25 honors.
Zach Ingram and his shop, ZRodz and Customs in
Knox, Indiana, captured the Best Street Machine award
with a 1970 Cuda he entered. The car, owned by Casey
Hornik and painted by Ingram, sported a radiant white coat
achieved with a mix of PPG products: DELTRON DP90LF
Epoxy Primer, DPS3055 V-PRIME Acrylic Urethane Surfacer, came to the show with a 1953 Studebaker he built for Paul and
DAS3025 V-SEAL Acrylic Urethane Sealer-Gray and DBC Betty Gilliam. Johnson and painter Greg Chalcraft used PPGs
