Langham Asian Series 2017 presents the first event of
the Langham 75th Anniversary of Japanese Canadian
Internment with a special evening, Tuesday, July 11, 7 pm,
with Joy Kogawa and Soramaru Takayama. Put it on your
calendar!
In an innovative poem within a poem format, this lit-
erary event commemorates the 75th anniversary of the
internment, dispossession and dispersal of Japanese
Canadians. Joy Kogawa, recipient of the Order of Canada
and Japans Order of the Rising Sun, best known for her
award-winning novel Obasan, partners with an up and
coming Japanese poet Soramaru Takayama of the Van-
couver TASAI Artist Collective.
Joy performs her own poems, one from Obasan, the
other from Gently to Nagasaki, within an original dra-
matic poetry monologue created by Soramaru. The poetry
will guide you on a pilgrimage through Joys memories.
After the performance there will be an opportunity to talk
to Joy Kogawa. This is a treasured opportunity to hear the
story of internment from a Canadian literary giant and a
living treasure.

on Kootenay Lake
The greatest fireworks display ever will be set off once
again over Kootenay Lake from the Crawford Bay Airstrip
and beach. With no street lights and reflections from the
water, this annual event sponsored by the Kootenay Lake
Chamber of Commerce brings thousands of watchers
every year. This year there was greater than ever fund-
ing from the Government of Canada and donations from
businesses. The giant illuminations will be set off by the
Riondel Fire Department.

#Canada150 Photos
Posterjack, a Canadian photo printing company, gave
Zach Baranowski, a talented young photographer, the
opportunity to travel across Canada for a once in a life-
time trip.
Between April 20 and May 16, Baranowski set out in an
RV and travelled from coast to coast with his camera in
hand. From the 15,000 photographs Zach captured, 150
were chosen to present as a gift for Canada on its 150th
birthday.
The goal of this project was to encapsulate the whole
country at this historic moment. Im excited to present
Canada with these photographs, says Baranowski. Its
amazing how diverse the landscape of the country is. The
Badlands in Alberta reminded me of Utah; British Colum-
bia reminded me of the rain forests of South America; and
Newfoundland was reminiscent of Ireland.
Fewer than half of Canadians have explored outside of
their home provinces, specifically residents of Ontario,
Quebec and British Columbia. We wanted to give Cana-
dians especially those whove never had the chance to
see it themselves a chance to experience their country in
a new and unforgettable way, says Tim Faught, president,
Posterjack. This is Posterjacks gift to Canada on its 150th

Heritage Structures Face The Future
Heritage structures are physical reminders of our com-
munities pasts. They may represent community defining
businesses that have come and gone, or early ways of life
that no longer exist. They may stand alone as singular
examples or be part of a string of historic structures that
add interest to a neighbourhood.
Now, 16 heritage structures in the Columbia Basin will
be better able to take on the future after being upgraded
thanks to support from Columbia Basin Trust. Through
its Built Heritage Grants, administered by Heritage BC,
the Trust is committing over $1.4 million to these projects.

The three year, $6.15 million funding program helps
groups preserve heritage structures to withstand time,
rehabilitate them for continued use or new uses, or restore
them to the way they once were. Heritage buildings are
markers of our history, add character to our communi-
ties and remain valuable for many types of activities,
said Wayne Lundeberg, Columbia Basin Trust director,
Delivery of Benefits. Improving them for both today and
tomorrow whether theyre important architecturally,
culturally, visually, for tourism or otherwise is one of
our priorities.
In Meadow Creek, the Lardeau Valley Historical Soci-
ety is taking on a project to preserve the one story log
cabin of one of the areas pioneers. The cabin was built by
Billy Clark in approximately 1939 and had to be moved to
higher ground when Duncan Reservoir flooded the land
in 1966. This year, the society will move the cabin onto
secure concrete slabs behind the Meadow Creek Museum.
In future years, it hopes to do more in-depth restoration.
The Billy Clark cabin is the singular tangible structure
that survived the flooding and thus very much represents
the stories of pre-60s pioneer life, said Peter Jonker, pres-
ident, Lardeau Valley Historical Society. The restored
cabin, when situated in a park like setting behind our
museum, will become our focal point of recreating and
interpreting the life of a local pioneer trapper, hunter and
craftsman.
In Nelson, the Nelson Coke and Gas Works building was
constructed in 1910 and helped establish a waterfront sec-
tion (now known as Railtown) as the industrial area of the

coke, tar, creosote and paint, the business supplied the
town with coal gas for heating and cooking. Once natural
gas arrived in Nelson in 1957, the plant closed down. Now
the City of Nelson will be undertaking exterior renova-
tions on this long vacant building, with hopes it can soon
be occupied and useful again.
An important and culturally significant part of Nelson,
Railtown borders the downtown core and waterfront and
features a number of historical landmarks, said Peter Sin-
stadt, facilities maintenance manager, City of Nelson. By
modernizing the Coke and Gas Works building, we can
ensure that this historic building remains a cornerstone
of Nelson for years to come.

Kootenay Food volunteers will be helping Phil to process his
garlic scapes into a garlic salt blend with our industrial sized
dehydrator and other mobile kitchen equipment. The finished
product will be shared between Phil and our Kootenay Food
pantry for fundraising sales and future events. While you are
checking out the mobile unit you can enjoy some delicious
BBQ by The Killbillies Grill. Slocan Valleys traveling slaugh-
ter men will be grilling links from both Legendary Meats and
hog farmer Jim Ross of Havesome Hogs Farm (also on the
tour this year). Including and promoting local farmers like
Jim is something we at Kootenay Food are passionate about,
ensuring it is an integral part of all of our activities.
This is just one example of what to expect on this years 12
site tour! Each garden on the tour will have a lovely assort-
ment of local craftspeople, music, food and festivities. The
diversity of gardens this year are sure to inspire; from pris-
tine manicured grounds and productive farms to whimsical
homesteads with artists in residence. Kootenay Food is so
honoured to have these incredible local growers open up
their homes and share their inspiring stories.

Play it safe when boating or swimming this summer. Our reservoirs can be
enjoyable recreation destinations, as long as we are being safe.

Because the water in our reservoirs is utilized for ood control and the
production of electricity, reservoir water levels can change daily. Reservoir
users should be aware that changing water levels can hide submerged hazards,
particularly in shallow water near the shoreline. It is important that visitors be
aware of these potential dangers and stay safe. Canadian Hydrographic Charts
are an excellent reference for boaters and are available at charts.gc.ca.

Boating, shing and swimming above or below a dam or generating station

can be dangerous. For everyones safety, obey all warning signs and stay out
of restricted areas.

Boaters must comply with all Canadian Coast Guard regulations and practice
safe boating at all times.
