Title : How Green Building Index will help to achieve sustainable

development

General Purpose: To Persuade

Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to use Green Building Index to achieve

sustainable development.

Central idea : Commercial construction method not help to preserve no renewable

recourse and reason why green building index need to be introduced
widely for construction, different between commercial construction
method with green building index and and benefit of using green
building index.

Introduction

i. In this new century, world is becoming more polluted and carbon dioxide release
uncontrollable driving to green house effect.
ii. Green house effect will lead to more problem such as melting of iceberg, increasing
temperature.
iii. Solution need to be taken to help reducing this effect to preserve environment for
future generation.
iv. The reason why all this happen is due to pollution due to releasing carbon dioxide
without control and using non renewable source without outline.
v. how much carbon dioxide release to environment ???
I. According NASA earth Observatory :
a) Eight gigatons of carbon dioxide was emitted to environment
today.
b) Number of global carbon dioxide emission keep increasing
drastically each year
vi. show how much carbon dioxide emission emission increasing annually
(transition: now we see must much world is effected by carbon emission)

(transition: Lets look how Green Building Index help in controlling carbon emission)
 GBI is developed specifically for the Malaysian-tropical climate, environmental
and developmental context, cultural and social needs and is created to:

I. Transform the build environment to reduce it negative environmental

effect
a) GBI promoted using natural resources to fulfilled all
human need

II. GBI have rating system which promoted people using natural
resources.

a) To maintain the certification, the building is

reassessed every three years. Points are given for
performance above benchmarks and current industry
practice.
b) The building will be awarded four type of rating which
are certified, silver,gold and platinum.

I. How this rating system help promoted sustainable development?

Based on 6 criteria :
Energy efficiency:
a) According to the GBI rating book:
1. It help to improve energy consumption by
optimising building orientation, minimizing
solar heat gain through the building envelope,
harvesting natural lighting, adopting the best
practices in building services including use of
renewable energy, and ensuring proper
testing, commissioning and regular
maintenance. .
2. Most of electric usage will decrease by using
natural resources such as daylight, wind and etc.
II. Indoor air quality.
a) Based on GBI rating system:
1. Point will be given if the building can achieve
good quality performance in indoor air quality,
acoustics, visual and thermal comfort. These
will involve the use of low volatile organic
compound materials, application of quality air
filtration, proper control of air temperature,
movement and humidity.
2. Resident can feel comfort without using high
energy consumption machines
 b) Site chosen for construction building also help reducing
carbon usage.
1. The site planned was near to public transport
access, promoting people to use public transport.
2. Avoiding and conserving environmentally
sensitive areas through the redevelopment of
existing sites and brownfields. Implementing
proper construction management, storm water
management and reducing the strain on
existing infrastructure capacity.

(transition: So how we can promote usage of GBI to help reducing carbon emission?)

I. A tax incentive from government

a) Government will pay back to developer the material for
GBI use
b) Developer can save million of it cost and promoting
using of GBI for their construction

II. We must providing information to whoever does not know GBI

a) Tell anyone who dont know GBI about what the benefit.

b) Attend GBI course as conducted in CIDB

.
III. GBI must set to be compulsory step by step.
a) Although GBI not compulsory, GBI must be set as
compulsory by government step by step.
b) Make sure people can adapt to the situation and after
that started to slowly make it compulsory for
construction field.

The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysias industry recognised green rating tool for
buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise awareness among
Developers, Architects, Engineers, Planners, Designers, Contractors and the Public
about environmental issues and our responsibility to the future generations.

The GBI rating tool provides an opportunity for developers and building owners to design
and construct green, sustainable buildings that can provide energy savings, water
savings, a healthier indoor environment, better connectivity to public transport and the
adoption of recycling and greenery for their projects and reduce our impact on the
environment.
