a) The paper is divided into two sections A and B. You have to attempt all the questions.
b) Questions 1 to 5 are one mark question.
c) Questions 6 to 10 carry two marks each.
d) Questions 11 to 22 carry three marks each.
e) Questions 23 is four marks question.
f) Questions 24 to 26 are five marks questions.

1. A particle is projected with a velocity of 14 m/s at an angle of 60 with the horizontal


direction. Write down the magnitude and direction. Write down the magnitude and
direction of velocity of the particle at the highest point of the path. ( g = 9.8m / s 2 )

at all possible angles. What will be the total area on the ground that will receive shower?

c) Look at the following diagram and write resultant vector in the form of remaining two
vectors.

10. On an open ground, a motorist follows a track that turns to his left by an angle of 60
after every 100 m. starting from a given turn specify the displacement of the motorist at
the third and sixth turn. Compare the magnitude of the displacement with the total path
length covered by the motorist in each case.
11. The following figure shows the acceleration time graph of a body.
a) Draw the corresponding velocity time graph
b) Draw the corresponding displacement time graph
c) Also calculate total distance covered in 20 second. Given that; at time t=0, velocity
v=0.

12. Find the scalar and vector products of two vectors:


A = (3i 4 j + 5k) and B = (2i + j 3k)
13. a) A block of mass 2 kg is placed on the floor. The coefficient of static friction is 0.4. A
force F of 2.5 N is applies on the block, as shown. Calculate the force of friction between
the block and the floor. ( g = 9.8m / s 2 )
b) A chain of length L is partly on a table and partly hanging outside the table. If the
coefficient of static friction between the chain an the table be s , what maximum length
of the chain can be kept does not slide?

14. A physical quantity P is related to four measurable quantities a, b, c and as follows:

15. In a harbor, wind is blowing at the speed of 72km / h 1 and the flag on the mast of a boat

speed of 51km / h 1 to the north, what will be the direction of the flag on the mast of the
boat?

16. a) State condition at equilibrium of a particle.


b) See figure A mass of 6 kg is suspended by a rope of length 2m form the ceiling. A force
of 50 N in the horizontal direction is applied at the midpoint P of the rope, as shown.
What is the angle the rope makes with the vertical in equilibrium? (Take g = 10m / s 2 ).
Neglect the mass of the rope.

Draw required free body diagram and calculate T1 , T2 & T3 .

17. a) State Newtons third law of motion. Give one example.


b) The figure shows a mass less, frictionless pulley hanging by a spring balance. The
free ends of a cord passing over the pulley carry 1 kg and 5 kg weights which move under
the action of gravity. Will the spring balance read 6 kg wt or less than 6 kg wt or more
than 6 kg wt during the motion of the weights?

18. Check dimensional correctness of following formula.

Here S=displacement, u=velocity, v=velocity, a=acceleration, t=time, T=time period,
l=length, g=acceleration due to gravity, y=displacement, a=amplitude.
19. The mass of an elevator (lift) is 500 kg. calculate the tension in the cable of the elevator
when the elevator is
i. Stationary
ii. Ascending with an acceleration of 2.0ms 2
iii. Descending with the same acceleration. ( g = 9.8m / s 1 )

20. A body of mass m suspended from an ideal spring is executing simple harmonic
oscillations. The force-constant of the spring is k and the time-period of the body is T.
Show by dimensional method that the formula T = 2 m / k is incorrect. Establish its
correct form.
Given that [m] = M ,[T ] = T and [k ] = MT 2
21. a) A hunter aims his gun and fires a bullet directly at a monkey on a tree. At the instant
the bullet leaves the gun, the monkey starts falling freely. Will the bullet hit the monkey?
Explain. (Assume that muzzle velocity of bullet is sufficient.)
b) If in the above question, had the muzzle velocity of bullet been 20 ms 1 , height of tree
30 2 and distance of the hunter from the root of the tree is 30 2 then what will be your
answer?
22. a) What is parallax?
b) Explain with the help of suitable diagram, how will you measure distance of moon
from earth using parallax method.
23. Two towns A and B are connected by a regular bus service with a bus leaving in either
direction every T min. A man cycling with a speed of 20 kmh 1 in the direction A to B
notices that a bus goes past him every 18 min in the direction of his motion, and every 6
min in the opposite direction. What is the period T of the bus service and with what speed
(assumed constant) do the buses play on the road?
24. A particle is following uniformly accelerated motion;
a) Obtain expression for displacement covered in t th second of its journey.

b) Obtain third equation of motion using calculus method.
c) The following graphs (a), and (b) show respectively the position time (x-t), velocity
time (v t ) ,. Which of these cannot possibly represent one-dimensional motion of a
particle, and why?

a) Obtain second equation of motion using calculus method.


b) The velocity of a train increases at a constant rate from zero to v and then remains
constant for an interval and finally decreases to zero at a constants rate . If x be the
total distance covered by the particle, then prove that the total time taken is

25. a) A particle is thrown with speed u at an angle with horizontal. Derive expression for
time period of flight and range.
b) A fighter plane flying horizontally at an altitude of 5 km at a constant speed of 720
km/h passes directly overhead an anti-aircraft gun. At what angle from the vertical
should the gun be fired for the shell with muzzle speed 600ms 1 to hit the plane? At what
minimum altitude should the pilot fly the plane to avoid being hit? ( g = 10m / s 2 )
Or
a) A particle is thrown with speed u at an angle with horizontal. Show that it follows
parabolic path.
b) There are two angles of projection for which the horizontal range is the same. Prove
that the sum of the maximum heights for these two angles does not depend upon the
angle of projection.
26. a) State laws of limiting friction.
b) The rear side of a truck is open and a box of 40 kg mass is placed 5 m away from the
open end, as shown. The coefficient of friction between the box and the surface below it is
0.10. On a straight road, the truck starts from rest and accelerates with 2 ms 2 . At what
distance from the starting point does the box fall off the truck? (Ignore the size of the box
and take ( g = 10m / s 2 )
Or
a) Define angle of repose and obtain expression it.

b) Determine, in the given diagram, the acceleration a of the system and the tension T1
and T2 in the strings. Assume that the table and the pulleys are frictionless and the
strings are massless ( g = 10m / s 2 ) .
