Unlike flexural design where we desing for the maximun moment, for shear we must desing along

the beam, we will have to plot the shear across the entire beam lenght and then desing for
different regions.
If we recall mohr circle, what was the pourpuse of mohr circle? Its to determine what the states
of stress are at given point if we change our oriantation. Then for this we find that our worst case
scenario its when the partical has moved to an angle of 45, becuase weve got pure tension in
one direction and pure compression in another, and as we know concrete does not like tension

We can notice in the picutre above that a concrete beam undergoing a load if such element fails in
shear itll do it near the support at 45 angles.
Note: d/s is a meassure of how many stirrups we have within a 45 shear fail. Since we asume the
fail occurs at a 45 angle, its pretty obvious to notice that the horizontal lengh of the crack will
equal the depth of beam.
