Foreword
During the past three decades, the diagnosis and treatment
of patients with cerebrovascular diseases have advanced
rapidly, whereby especially the eld of neuroimaging has
made a huge progress. In comparison to other imaging
techniques, neurosonology encompasses different ultra-
sonographic methods which offer excellent time resolution,
a bedside approach and noninvasiveness.
In 1996, the rst meeting of the European Society of Neu-
rosonology and Cerebral Hemodynamics (ESNCH) in Munich
became the cornerstone for further successful coopera-
tion in developing new ultrasound diagnostics and even
for new therapeutic techniques in neurosonology. In 1997,
selected contributions to the aforementioned symposium
were published in the book New Trends in Cerebral
Hemodynamics and Neurosonology. The subsequent annual
European meetings have become a popular platform for
scientic exchange among all who are interested in neu-
rosonology not only in Europe, but also worldwide. This
successful tradition continued in 2011, when the 16th ESNCH
Meeting again took place in Munich.
Because of the large number of high-quality scientic
contributions at the 2011 Munich Meeting, we decided to
build on our rst 1997 book success and to follow with a new
book, New Trends in Neurosonology and Cerebral Hemody-
namics an Update, which features lectures and some of
the best-rated posters presented at the meeting, and which
highlights the most interesting current topics in the eld of
neurosonology and cerebral hemodynamics. The concept of
this book is very modern due to its additional online access.
It enables the reader to view ultrasound images and videos
that were included in the scientic contributions.
This new book reects the development in the eld
of neurosonology during the past 16 years. In addition
to covering the current state of the art in traditional
neurosonographic topics, such as extra- and transcranial
Doppler- and duplex ultrasonography, emboli detection,
cerebral autoregulation, functional testing, etc., we also
included articles presenting the newest imaging and
therapeutic technologies, such as imaging of plaque per-
fusion, cerebral perfusion techniques, or sonothrombolysis.
We are grateful that not only neurologists but also authors

from other disciplines have contributed with their articles
among others about mechanical recanalization in acute
stroke treatment, about neuro-navigation and functional
guidance in intracranial tumor surgery, and about ultrasound
fusion imaging as well, so that readers will nd a compre-
hensive overview of the latest discoveries and knowledge in
neuroimaging and of therapeutic strategies in this eld.
Scientists from 51 countries all over the world parti-
cipated at the Munich meeting. It is a great pleasure for us
to also present the contributions of colleagues from those
countries where neuroimaging techniques were not estab-
lished until recent years. Despite the starting difculties in
implementing ultrasonography and introducing it into clini-
cal routine, these colleagues are playing an important role
in transferring neurosonographic methods worldwide.
