P58204 PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC

DEVELOPMENT FOR MARKETERS

REFLECTIVE STATEMENT

SUBMITTED TO: JO FEEHILY

STUDENT NO: 16041907
Reflective writing is an expression of the mental process on the paper. In other words it is a reflection
of what we have done is a particular course of time to enhance our knowledge and personality.
However it is truly said in order to reflect something we need to learn and therefore this module of
professional and academic development helped us to think in the areas in which we were weak so
that we could work on the same. Hence the aim of this statement is to reflect on the things done by
me to achieve my framed CPD action plan. The statement written below gives a briefing about how I
worked on my weakness to overcome them.

In the initial stage the module required us to frame an action plan in which I wrote about my strengths
and weakness and the things I wanted to improve alongside my masters degree to grow as a
professional. The major pointers included in my plan were: - improvisation of CV, enhance my writing
and speaking skills, attending conferences to socialize with different people and lastly to intern or
work in any company.

In the starting of the semester in Brookes being new to the UKs education system I had trouble in
drafting reports and referencing them so to overcome this problem which ultimately affected my
grades I joined Academic English lectures in the university itself. These lectures gave us a deep
understanding in how to draft a report and essay. Secondly the professor told us how to refer to
different articles and journals and most importantly how to cite them in our report. I also learnt how to
analyze a topic and what are the major areas and boundaries one should properly look at to answer
and understand it. Lastly seven hours spent in these lectures helped me a lot in the completion of my
coursework during the degree year.

The workshops arranged by our professors further helped me in building my writing skills. The
workshops related to essay and report writing gave me second hand tips on further improving my
coursework. Then workshops related to writing of covering letter and resume writing told me about
how firms in UK ones CV to look like and what are the key areas to focus on. Hence this was from this
point I decided to work as every firm big or small wanted an experienced personnel. Henceforth the
above stated English lecture and writing workshops have helped me improve my grades as one can
notice the change in grades of semester one and two.

Moving on to improving and strengthening my CV I joined a Part Time Job to add up to my work
experience. I worked as a team member in Tossed a healthy food joint located in Welcome Break,
M40. Being my first experience in the work field the manager so very polite and did not burden me
with work in initial days. My major role was as a cashier and also as a assistant to manager in which I
helped her in the management of the store and also assisted in sales while promoting the sides. The
experience at work not only added to my CV but also taught me to deal with and understand different
kinds of customer behaviour.

Further I attended a Research Conference undertaken by our own professors in the start of the term
to give us an insight about how the research is done in regards with our dissertation. During this talk
we learnt many things which were helpful to us in the later stage of dissertation and even while writing
the research proposal. I got an overview of the things to be done and the framework to do research
and also understood the importance of doing a research. Apart from this the conference was our first
major interaction with our professors and our class mates and therefore it proved to be effective as we
got to socialize and open up.
Later in the module itself we presented a Mini Presentation in group of three in which we
demonstrated the two major dream jobs in which we want to see ourselves in future. While working on
our presentation we learnt about the key qualities and qualification required for the role of a brand
manager and marketing assistant. Further we also got to know about some of the key task and
responsibility for both the roles.

To then improve my speaking skills and to learn more about the marketing and management field and
how people have achieved their goals I attended various kinds of talks and went for B2B expo.

I attended a Talk By Gary Frank who is the CEO of Delicious Doughnuts. In merely two hours time
he inspired us by telling his success story. He gave us guidance on how to work in tough times and
majorly taught us the key rule of life which is never to give up. Moreover he spoke to us how a small
idea can be turned to a big one with team work. Lastly he ended by saying that all one needs is the
passion to do something.

The Oxford Brookes Marketing Society also arranged few people to come over and talk to us
regarding the field of marketing and how does various companies work. And hence I took the privilege
of attending one talk given by the member of Spotify a music related company. The lady told us how
the company does promotion and marketing of the brand by approaching various universities and
organizing events for them. She told us how the company chooses specific candidates and arranges
a party in a far and unknown place hence by creating interest and desire to connect with the brand. At
the end she offered us to apply for the post of brand ambassador of Spotify for our own university.

I was also attended the biggest B2B Expo Marketing organized by Excel London. The marketing
event organized involved marketers of top and renowned companies who not only gave seminars but
also connected with vast number of audience. Some of the names of the companies whose
representatives were involved in a two day event were Google, IBM, HSBC, Digital Doughnut,
LinkedIn, Sales force etc. The event provided the perfect platform to hear influential marketing leaders
and also helped to boost professional knowledge. The business leaders delivered an essential mix of
advice, ideas and inspiration that helps in ones personal development.
On the first day of the expo I attended the talk given by Jeremy Waite- Marketing Evangelist at IBM.
He referred to the future of marketing and how consumer behaviour will change in next 5 years thus
challenging the business industry while giving them the opportunity on the same hand. Then was the
talk given by Jason Miller- Global Marketing Content Leader at LinkedIn. He gave a brief discussion
on how changes in societys ability to multi task are transforming the ways in which companies
approach towards their content marketing. He at the end debated that companies should now start
thinking in terms of brain over budget. At the end of the day I attended talk by Heldl Myers- Marketing
and Communications Director EMEA at Meltwater. According to her years of work experience in the
field of digital marketing she spoke about the influence that digital media creates on consumers. She
phrased that brands reputation can be made or slayed in the tap of a tweet.
On the second day more experts enlightened us by their expert and intelligent views in the field of
marketing. Some of them were- seminar by Mark Maclure on building brand loyalty- how B2B can
learn from B2C, Kobi Omenaka- how digital marketing really works etc. Raja Saggi- Head of B2B
Marketing UK at Google provided us with some great tips on how to use digital advertising to solve
B2B customer growth and retention challenges.
To improve my leadership and communication skills I opted for the post of class representative and
addressed the problems of students with the professors. And to work in a proper manner I attended
CR training workshops which helped me to contact my class mates in a better way.

Lastly I gave myself the private study time in which I read journals and articles which helped me
complete my coursework and gave a better understating of a particular topic.

To conclude my reflective statement I mention below the particular time that I have spent on each of
the activity referred above and also the proof of all the activities I have done to grow my professional
and personal skills.
