Choosing the path of Medicine is like choosing a life partner.

Similar to a
marriage, true love never goes away and is the key ingredient for a happy
medical career. Therefore, I have always urged students to be truthful to
yourselves and choose the program that you love to have a lifelong career in
Medicine.

Through this new ebulletin, I am delighted to share with you a peek into what life
might be like for you with us and the people you will be working with. As you get
to know our programs, we invite you to discover your love of Medicine with
SingHealth Residency.

RESIDENTS PAY IT FORWARD
Peer-pressure takes on a positive meaning at Internal Medicine (IM). Diagnostic Radiology
DRadioResidency@singhealth.com.sg
With the introduction of CADENCE a peer-teaching initiative which just began this June, the passing rate of Emergency Medicine
the MRCP PACES exams has raised significantly by more than 20% to above 80%. This initiative is led by two IM EMresidency@singhealth.com.sg
Residents, Dr Jonathan Yap and Dr Mark Cheah. They have both received the Young Educators Award at
SingHealth Residencys RiSE Awards this year. Family Medicine

Doing what is natural for friends General Surgery
CADENCE systemizes the peer teaching culture of IM, providing an avenue for those who are willing to step GSResidency@singhealth.com.sg
up. CADENCE means running in rhythmic steps together and thrives on the concept of paying it
forward. Residents who have just passed the MRCP exams will take on the role of Resident-mentors and guide Internal Medicine

an assigned group of Residents weekly once a week, over a three-month period.
More than 30 Residents have benefitted from CADENCE to date. Obstetrics & Gynecology
Dr Tanujaa D/O Rajasekaran, who recently passed her exams OGResidency@singhealth.com.sg

has only made it natural that I should do the same for my peers.
Orthopaedics
Indeed, CADENCE has helped to bring the IM community OrthoResidency@singhealth.com.sg
together where Residents foster a genuine interest to help each

other excel. We feel down when our peers dont make it

through the exams, and will all help to get them through it the

Success factors Pediatrics
One of the contributing factors to the success of CADENCE has to be the strong camaraderie within the PedsResidency@singhealth.com.sg
specialty. Since the Resident-mentors already know the Residents well, they are able to help track their
progress more accurately and motivate each other to press on. Surgery-In-General
SIGSSResidency@singhealth.com.sg
Another factor would be its sharing culture inspired by exemplary figures like IM Program Director-
Designate, Dr Phua Ghee Chee, who often goes out of the way to maximize potential of his Residents. When Transitional Year
asked on Dr Mark Cheahs motivation behind CADENCE, he simply puts it If Dr Phua in all his TYResidency@singhealth.com.sg
busyness can offer dedicated time to teach us in small groups, what excuses do we have not to do the same?

Generous spirit of sharing rubs off STAY CONNECTED

Just like how the Residents are motivated by their facultys commitment, the faculty
are likewise inspired by their Residents too. I am very proud of the outstanding
PACES results of our residents. I am even more proud of the strong community spirit
that exists amongst our residents, and how much they care for their juniors. Their
energy and enthusiasm in running resident-led peer support initiatives e.g. CADENCE
facebook.com/SingHealthResidency
(PACES support) and REACH (residents-as-teachers) inspires us to work harder to
provide them with the best learning experiences. says Dr Phua Ghee Chee.

Congratulations to our IM residents who did well for their MRCP exams. Keep the Director-Designate,

spirit of paying it forward going! youtube.com/SingHealthResidency
