Sheet (3) Synchronous Machine
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Mention conditions required for synchronization.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. An isolated three phase alternator produce no load line voltage 13.2 kV. If a load having a
lagging power factor 0.8 is connected to the machine. Must the excitation be increased or
decreased to maintain the same line voltage.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. A three phase alternator runs at 1000 rpm and generate a no load voltage 9kV, 50 Hz. How
will the terminal voltage be affected if the following loads are connected to its terminals:-
a. Resistive load.
b. Inductive load.
c. Capacitive load.
If the field current is kept constant, calculate the no load voltage and frequency if the speed
is:-
d. 900 rpm.
e. 50 rpm.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. A test taken on a 500 MVA, 15 kV, Y connected synchronous generator yields the following
results:-
1) Open circuit line voltage is 15 kV for a dc exciting current of 1400 A.
2) Using the same dc current with the armature terminals short circuit, armature short
circuit AC current was 21000 A.
a. If armature resistance equal 0.1 , calculate the synchronous reactance.
b. Calculate the generator voltage regulation if the generator feeds full load with 0.8
lagging PF, 0.8 leading PF, and unity PF.
c. Calculate the generator voltage regulation if the generator feeds 40 %full load with 0.8
lagging PF, 0.8 leading PF, and unity PF.
d. Calculate the generator voltage regulation if the generator feeds 60 %full load with 0.95
lagging PF, 0.95 leading PF, and unity PF.
e. Repeat a, b, c, d if the generator is delta connections.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. A 36 MVA, 21 kV, 1800 rpm, 4 poles, Y connected synchronous generator has a
synchronous reactance 9 /phase and neglected armature resistance. The generator is
connected to a power grid. If the machine exiting voltage is 21 kV, and the power grid
voltage is 17.3 kV. Calculate the following:-
a. Frequency.
b. The active power delivered by the machine if the power angle =30.
c. The maximum power which the generator can deliver before the generator become
unstable.
d. The reactive power delivered by the machine.
