X 10 CrMoVNb 9-1
9253-06
Part3
Montage; SchweiBen von Rohrleitungsteilen aus X 10 CrMoVNb 9-1 Supersedes 02-08

1 Scope
This Standard applies to the welding of piping components of the material X 10 CrMoVNb 9-1 (EN material no.
1.4903, ASTM A335 P91 ), which will be supplemented by special instructions, if necessary. The requirements
of UN 9253-06 Part 1 "Welding and weld examination of metallic piping" shan be additionany observed.

Deviations from this Standard shall be agreed between the Orderer and the Contractor in writing.

2 Weld preparation
The weld preparation shall be performed according to the technical specification "Welding data sheet for pip-
ing". The type of preparation depends on the wall thickness of the items to be joined.

Bevelling machines shall be used for the weld preparation. The shape of the joint shall be checked for proper
execution. Liquid penetrant testing of beveUed ends shall be pelformed immediately after the weld prepara-
tion.

Pipes should be cut cold. The plasma-arc procedure may only be employed after heating up to the preheating
temperature Ip according to Table 1. After plasma-arc cutting the cut shall be wrapped up with insulation mate-
rial to ensure slow cooling.

3 Welding procedures
The following welding procedures are permitted:
for a wall thickness;; 8 mm: GTAW,
for a wall thickness> 8 mm: GTAW for the root and subsequent two runs, thereafter SMAW.

The internal misalignment of the components to be joined must not exceed 1.6 mm. The weld shall be welded
with continuous weave beads in thin runs of up to approximately 2 mm thickness to achieve the required notch
impact strength (20 c impact test value according to the filler metals manufacturer).

To avoid inadmissible heating of the material grinding shall be performed with utmost care (red heat is not
permitted}. Pneuma~c grinding tools shall not be used because of the risk of undesirable cooling by the ex-
haust air.

4 Welding filler metals

The base materials indicated in the technical specification "Welding data sheet for piping shalt only be welded
with the specified welding filler metals. On the Orderer's request. manufacturer's certificates shall be provided
for all filler metals.

5 Heat treatment
Heating of the material before and after welding shalt be performed by means of adjustable electric heating
elements. The heating elements shall be arranged on both sides of the weld according to Figure 1. In order to
allow tor the required grinding work, the spacing A should be approximately 100 mm. The heat loss which
depends on the wall thickness and the spacing of the heating elements may be controlled by applying or re-
moving insulation material in the area of the weld.

The outer surtaces of the heating elements shalt be provided with heat insulation to avoid heat losses, and to
protect the welder from excessive heat radiation. During annealing, the area between the heating elements
shall be covered with ceramic fiber fabric.

Figure 1. Arrangement of the heating elements

The power supply of the heating elements must not be covered with the insulation to avoid damage of the
power cables.

5.1 Preheating
Preheating of the material up to the welding temperature shall be controlled at four measuring points by suit-
able measuring instruments. Contact thermometers, infrared measuring instruments, or thermocouples are
permitted for this purpose. Measured temperatures shall be recorded.

If thermocouples have to be used, the thermocouple wires shall be tack welded at both sides (M,, M 2) of the
joint by means of a spot-welding device, in each case in the 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock position. Prier to tack
welding, the measuring points shall be locally preheated up to 180 c to 200 c. The measuring points M, and
M2 shall be arranged according to Figure 1.

5.2 Welding and cooling down

Welding shall start as soon as the preheating temperature is in the range of 180 c to 200 c. The interpass
temperature shall not exceed 320 c, when the incfividual passes are applied. A soaking time of 2 hours after
welding at a temperature of 250 c may be specified, which depends on the wall thickness and the local con-
ditions.

Cooling down to the Martensitic transformation temperature of 80 c to 20 c shall be performed at a con-

trolled rate of max. 200 c I hour. The transformation temperature shall be maintained for at least 1 hour, if the
annealing process starts immediately thereafter. Whether annealing shall be commenced with or intermediate
storage shall be done, will be decided by the site management. The storage temperature shall be at least 20
c.
When the storage temperature has been reaehed, the welded ttems may be stored for a maximum of 48 hours
under dry condttions. Care shall be taken to avoid stresses caused by impact or movement.

During the intermediate storage period the weld may be examined non-destructively. Defects found may be
repaired prior to annealing. Time consuming additional annealing will thus be avoided. This intermediate ex-
amination shall not be considered as a substitution of the specified examination after annealing and the re-
lated costs shall be borne by the Contractor.

5.3 Annealing
At welds between pipes of,; DN 300, the annealing temperature shall be controlled at six measuring points by
tack welded thermocouples. Therefore, at the end of the Martensitic transformation time, or after reaching the
storage temperature thermocouple wires shall be tack welded at both sides of the weld (M 1 , M2 ) and on top of
the weld (M,) by means of a spot-welding device, in each case in the 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock position. Prior to
tack welding, the measuring points shall be locally preheated up to 180 c to 200 c.

At welds between pipes of> DN 300 the annealing temperature shall be controlled at nine measuring points.
The thermocouple wires shall be tack welded at both sides of the weld (M 1 , Mi) and on top of the weld (M 3 ), in
each case In the 4 o'clock, 8 o'clock, and 12 o'clock position.

The measured temperatures shall be recorded with a 6-point or 9-point color chart recorder.

Heating up to the annealing temperature of 750 'C 10 'C shall be performed at a rate of 100 c I hour
maximum. The annealing temperature shall be maintained for at least 2 hours, which depends on the wall
thickness. Thereafter, cooling down to 300 'C at a rate of 50 'C I hour shall be performed. Further cooling
down to the ambient temperature may be uncontrolled. The ceramic fiber fabric shall only be removed after
the ambient temperature has been reached.

Uhde UN 9253-06 Part 3 : 2004-06

Pipes with a wall thickness of ,,;, 15 mm shall be subjected to a radiographic examination. Pipes with a wall
thickness of > 15 mm shall be subjected to ultrasonic examinations transversely and longitudinally to the
seam.

During the storage period and prior to annealing all butt welds should be subjected to a liquid penetrant test
and all fillet welds should be subjected either to a liquid penetranl test or a magnetic particle test for crack
detection. All related costs involved shall be borne by the Contractor.

All welds shall be subjected to a hardness test after cooHng down from the annealing temperature to the am-
bient temperature. The hardness values shall not exceed 241 HB. With the approval of !he site management
the hardness values may be degraded in exceptional cases but shall not be less than 155 HB and not more
than 250 HB.

After removal of the thermocouple wires, the tack welds shall be ground flush and subjected to a magnetic
particle test.

Repairs are only permitted up to a depth of one half of the wall thickness. Annealing shall be repeated if the
repair is performed after annealing. Defects in the welds being deeper than one half of the wall thickness shall
be repaired by complete removal of the wald and re-welding. The instructions of the manufacturer of the filler
metal shall be observed.

Repeated repair of a weld is not permitted. Instead of a second repair at the same weld, the site management
may request from the Contractor to insert a new piece of pipe. All costs in connection with the repair of defec-
tive welds shall be borne by the Contractor.
