B.S. Community Nutrition Human Dignity and Rights

Dignity pertains to a persons self-worth or self-respect. When one has no dignity, one has no
sense of self-respect or self-worth. Imagine living in a world where people are deprived of
dignity, yes people are aware of their dignity but they are forced to live without dignity. To some,
a world without dignity might sound impossible but no, there are parts of the world where people
live in an undignified way. Not that they choose to live that way, but rather they were forced to.
One case of this is the prostitution in Bangladesh. Prostitution in Bangladesh has been legal
since 2000, although discouraged this is still going on. As young as 10 years old, some women
were sold into the brothel to work as sex slaves earning about $11 to $20 a day, $3 per person.
To me, this is unfair and it makes me mad that people who work there have no choice but to
continue to work as sex worker. This is an example of deprivation of human dignity.

Needless to say, human rights are very important to people. People fight for them, some of us
go extra miles to protect our basic human rights. If people are feeling deprived of any human
right, even one, it causes a revolution to bring about social change. Human rights is a very
sensitive and serious issue nowadays, in Philippines and even worldwide. This is because of
the new leaders that have gained power over Philippines and America. In America, Donald
Trump won the presidency and is focused on bringing about change to make America great
again and this change involves forcing immigrants out of America. Although this is not done
directly but is indirectly being done to people through discrimination, violence and trying to instil
fear to people so they voluntarily get out of America. This is Trumps attempt to make America
white again, Aryan race in Germany, Holocaust led by Hitler, ring a bell, anyone? On another
hand, in Philippines, unfortunately Digong Duterte won the presidency, I can almost see the
similarity between Trump and Duterte although Duterte is focused on trying to eliminate drugs
in the Philippines, which of course involves eliminating the drug-users. This also involves extra-
judicial killings and the oplan tokhang which basically means is to approach and talk. The
oplan tokhang main objectives is to warn drug users to stop their activities. A recent
controversy is the implementation of the capital punishment in the Philippines which is needless
to say, a violation of human rights and justice.

I dont want to live in a country where people are being killed for their crimes. I believe that there
are more ways to bring about justice without violating human rights. I am Camille Grefaldia, and
I say NO to death penalty.
