Hypothesis Testing

1. Research question

For the purpose of our project, we want to check if FSD and FMT students are satisfied with
their final exams results in Semester 1 when they both prepare for 1 week. From the data
collected, there are 31 out of 50 FMT students choosing 1 week to prepare for final exam, while
FSD has 39 out of 50 picking the same amount of time as FMT. Our group designs this
following question to identify the evidence serving for testing:

Question 4: Do you satisfy with your results in final exam

A. Yes

B. No

Question 6: Do you think that you need to have a change in your revision time to gain
better mark?

A. I do need to change.

B. I do not need to change.

C. I have not thought about it yet.

Based on the data collected, the aim of the research is to test the difference in satisfaction of final
exams reslts between 2 categories of gradates. Thus, we decided to use the hypothesis testing
for two poplation proportion to test whether there has difference or not. Specially, the parameter
of interest is the population proportion 1 and 2 , the estimator of this parameter is the sample
proportion
1 and
.

2. Assumption
Independent, simple random samples
Sample sizes are large with n1 =31 (>30), and n2 = 39 (>30). 1 is the number of FMT
students who revise in 1 week are satisfied with their results and 2 is number of FSD
students preparing for final exam are happy with their results.
Populations follow normally distributed
The following conditions hold true

3. Data analysis

After some calculations based on formulas and data collected, we have:

o Question 4:
13 29
The sample proportion: 1 = = 0.4193 and 2 = = 0.7436
31 39

The sample standard deviation:

1 (1 1 ) 2 (1 2 ) 0.4193(10.4193) 0.7436(10.7436)
1 2 = + = + = 0.113
1 2 31 39

Because of the way the alternative hypothesis is set up, this is two tail tests. The critical
value is: z2 z0.025 = 1.96.
o Question 6:
22 13
The sample proportion: 1 = = 0.7097 and 2 = = 0.3333
31 39

The sample standard deviation:

1 (1 1 ) 2 (1 2 ) 0.7097(10.7097) 0.3333(10.3333)
1 2 = + = + = 0.111
1 2 31 39

Because of the way the alternative hypothesis is set up, this is two tail tests. The critical
value is: z2 z0.025 = 1.96.

4. Hypothesis testing procedure

a. Research Question 4:

Our requirement is at 5% of level significant, whether the data collected indicate that there is a
difference in satisfaction of final exams reslts between FMT and FSD students or not.

Step 1: The null and alternative hypothesis

0 : 1 2 = 0

: 1 2 0

Step 2: Test statistics for Two Proportions

( 1 2 )(1 2 ) 1 +2 13+29
= 1 1
where =
1 + 2
=
31+39
= 0.6
(1)( + )
1 2

Step 3: Level of significance:

= 0.05
Step 4: Decision rule:

Critical value: 2 = 0.025 = 1.96. Reject H0 if || > 1.96

Step 5:Value of the statistic:

( 1 2 )(1 2 ) (0.41930.7436)0
= 1 1
=
1 1
= -2.751
(1)( + ) 0.6(10.6)( + )
1 2 31 39

Step 6: Conclusion:

We have |z|= 2.751 > z0.025 = 1.96, therefore, we do reject H0.

From our test for the question, we can reach the conclusion that with the level of significant of
0.05, there is enough statistical evidence to conclude that there has the difference in satisfaction
of final exams reslts between FMT and FSD students who revise in 1 week.

b. Research Question 6:

For our second question, we want to test if there is enough evidence to conclude that the number
of FMT students preparing in 1 week want to change revision time is as not same as the figure of
FSD making sure that they should have a change in revision time.

Step 1: The null and alternative hypothesis

0 : 1 2 = 0

: 1 2 0

Step 2: Test statistics for Two Proportions

( 1 2 )(1 2 ) 1 +2 22+13
= 1 1
where =
1 + 2
=
31+39
= 0.5
(1)( + )
1 2

Step 3: Level of significance:

= 0.05
Step 4: Decision rule:

Critical value: 2 = 0.025 = 1.96. Reject H0 if || > 1.96

Step 5:Value of the statistic:

( 1 2 )(1 2 ) (0.70970.3333)0
= 1 1
=
1 1
= 3.128
(1)( + ) 0.5(10.5)( + )
1 2 31 39

Step 6: Conclusion:

We have |z|= 3.128 > z0.025 = 1.96,therefore, we do reject H0.

From our test for the second research question, we can lead to the conclusion that with the level
of significant of 0.05, there is enough statistical evidence to conclude that there has a large
difference in FMT and FSD students who want to have a change in their revision time to have
better results in next semester.
