1) (a) An orifice meter with orifice diameter 15 cm is inserted in a pipe of 30cm diameter.

The pressure
difference measured by a mercury oil differential manometer on the two sides of the orifice meter gives
a reading of 50 cm of mercury. Find the rate of flow of oil of specific gravity 0.9 when the coefficient of
discharge of the meter = 0.64.
(b) A window, in a vertical wall is at a distance of 30m above the ground level. A jet of water, issuing
from a nozzle of diameter 50 mm is to strike the window. The rate of flow of water through the nozzle is
3.5 m3/minute and nozzle is situated at a distance of 1 m above ground level. Find the greatest
horizontal distance from the wall of the nozzle so that jet of water strikes the window.

2) (a) In a 45o bend a rectangular air duct of 1 m2 cross-sectional area is gradually reduced to 0.5m2 area.
Find the magnitude and direction of the force required to hold the duct in position if the velocity of flow
at the 1 m2 section is 10m/s, and pressure is 2.943 N/cm2. Take density of air as 1.16kg/m3.
(b) A nozzle of diameter 20 mm is fitted to a pipe of diameter 40 mm. Find the force exerted by the
nozzle on the water which is flowing through the pipe at the rate of 1.2 m3/minute.

3) (a) A horizontal venturimeter with inlet diameter 20 cm and throat diameter 10 cm is used to
measure the flow of water. The pressure at inlet is 17.658 N/cm2 and the vacuum pressure at the throat
is 30cm of mercury. Find the discharge of water through venturimeter. Take Cd=0.98
(b) Find the discharge of water flowing through a pipe 30 cm diameter placed in an inclined position
where a venturimeter is inserted, having a throat diameter of 15 cm. The difference of pressure
between the main and throat is measured by a liquid of sp. Gr. 0.6 in an inverted U-tube which gives a
reading of 30cm. The loss of head between the main and throat is 0.2 times the kinetic head of the pipe.

4) (a) An open circular cylinder of 15cm diameter and 100cm long contains water upto a height of 80 cm.
Find the maximum speed at which the cylinder is to be rotated about its vertical axis so that no water
spills.
(b) In a two dimensional potential flow, the velocity potential is given by = x (2y -1 ). Determine the
velocity at the point P (4,5). Determine also the value of stream function at the point P.

5) (a) A closed cylindrical vessel of diameter 30cm and height 100cm contains water upto a depth of
80cm. The air above the water surface is at pressure of 5.886 N/cm2. The vessel is rotated at a speed of
250 rpm about its vertical axis. Find the pressure head at the bottom of the vessel: (i) At the centre (ii) at
the edge.
(b) The velocity distribution in a two dimensional flow are u=y3/3 +2x x2y and v= xy2 -2y x3/3. Show
that these components represent a possible case of an irrotational flow.

6) (a) In a three dimensional incompressible steady flow, three mutually orthogonal velocity
components are u= -x+y , v= x+2y-z, w= -y z. Find velocity and acceleration at point (2,1,1)
(b) Define stream function in two dimensional fluid flow. In two dimensional fluid flow in x-y plane,
the component of velocity in y direction at any point P(x,y) is kx. What is the simplest form of velocity
component in x direction? What is the simplest form of stream function ? Sketch three consecutive
streamlines = k, = 2k, = 3k
