PREFACE

Process simulators such as HYSYS have become an indispensabletool

for design and retrofit of refierim and e c a l plants. Originally
created for the commodity industry, the advantages provided by these
tools have maqe them also an attractive option for othei indastrial
application su& as pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals. Software
compwes are constantIy increasing the capability of simulator to
include novel technology and expand their application market. In the
20 years, simulators have become more user friendly and have been
expanded to incorporate equipment design and, costing tools. As a
result, Chemical Engineering programs thfoughout the nation started
using them for a variety of reasons. Some professors see process
simulators as a must-do-must-tea&. students are familiarized with
its use by the time they graduate. In this case, process simulators are
generally introduced during the senior design sequence or simply
that plant design courses. Others have found that process simulators
as a valuable teaching aid.
HYSYS allows engineers to incorporate steady state and
dynamic modeling techniques to evaluate designs and rate existing
plants. HYSYS simulations are used to develop high fidelity operator
training simulators, examine detailed unit and plant-wide
perfonnance, and simulate dangerous and non-profitable operating
conditions to improve plant profitability and business perfonnance.
Equipment and instrumentation detail is appropriate for detailed plant
simulations that support high-end operator training, and detailed '
safety and capacity studies. HYSYS includes all of the steady state
capabilities of HYSYS,in addition to the,high-end dynamics.
