16th Note Triplet Fill

Group of 9

This is a fill I get asked about a lot. Its fusion-y phase that youll often hear
played by Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl etc and is particularly useful because its
orchestrated between ride, snare and bass drum so can be used within time
playing.

Its tricky because the sticking is a group of nine but remember, its just
triplets. Always keep that triplet feel going in your head.

Heres the first example (last beat could be something else):

R L R L L R R L L R L R L L R R L L R R L R L L
>6 > > 6 > > > > 6
>
6

/ 4
4

You could then accent the first two snare notes that start each nine:

R L R L L R R L L R L R L L R R L L R R L R L L
> > >6 > > 6 > > > > > > 6
>
6

4
/ 4

This one incorporates the left foot on the first note of each grouping:

R L R L L R R L L R L R L L R R L L R R L R L L
>6 > > 6 > > > > 6
>
6

4
/ 4

And this is how it would look over two bars (this helps learn how to play it for
longer without losing where you are in terms of bars:

RRL
6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6
4
/ 4
