SECTIONS: Fibonacci, Pascal, Newton, & Napier

June 27, 2017

Section: Gauss
I. OBJECTIVE(S) At the end of the lesson, at least 75% of the students with 75 proficiency should be
able to achieve the ff. goals:
1. Explain the processes that occur in a divergent boundary;
2. Determine the geological events that could happen as well as the geologic
features that will be formed during a divergent boundary.; and
3. Recognize the relevance of divergence in a day-to-day life.
II. SUBJECT MATTER A. UNIT 1 : Earth and Space
Module 1: Plate Tectonics
Topic: Divergent Boundary
B. Reference/s: Science Learners Material for Grade 10 pp. 25-26
C. Materials: illustration of ridges & rift valleys
III. LEARNING TASKS
A. ENGAGE Start the lesson by asking, what are the signs that 2 friends or lovers are going
separate ways?

(Students must mention the words break apart, move away from each other etc.

Then introduce the term DIVERGENT.

B. EXPLORE 1. The activity is entitled Going Separate Ways.
2. Students will be required to analyze four pictures. The two topmost pictures
are rift valleys while the bottom are oceanic ridges.

3. The ff. questions should be answered during the activity:

a. What are common in the four pictures?
b. Millions of years ago, the land masses in each picture were once connected.
What do you think is happening to the Earths crust in those pictures?
c. If this event continues for millions of years, what do you think will be the
effect on the crust?
d. Complete the drawing below to illustrate your answer in question c.
At present

After millions of years

C. EXPLAIN Facilitate the discussion using the ff. guide questions:

Answers to Questions:
a. What are common in the four pictures?
Answers: All four pictures show a fissure or a crack between two land masses.
b. What do you think is happening to the Earths crust in those pictures?
Answer: The land masses are moving away from each other.
c. If this event continues for millions of years, what do you think will be the
effect on the crust?
Answer: The distance between the land masses will be far greater than what
is shown in the picture.
d. Complete the drawing below to illustrate your answer in question number 3.
Answer: The illustration of the students should show a wider crack or fissure
between the two land masses.

KEY CONCEPT:
Divergent boundaries occur along spreading centers where plates are moving apart
and new crust is created by magma pushing up from the mantle.

1. Effects that are found at a divergent boundary between oceanic plates

include: a submarine mountain range such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; volcanic
activity in the form of fissure eruptions; shallow earthquake activity; creation of new
seafloor; and a widening ocean basin.
2. If a divergent boundary is between continental plates, the effects are: rift valley
formation which will soon develop into linear sea; shallow earthquake activities,
and numerous normal faults.

D. ELABORATE Emphasize that divergence is also important in terms of people with different origins,
personalities etc It adds colors to life.
E. EVALUATE In 3 statements, explain the processes that occur during a divergent boundary.

IV. ASSIGNMENT Cut-out pictures (2 for each) showing ocean ridges and rift valleys in the world. Much
better if the features will be from the Philippines.
V. REFLECTION
