Holy Communion (ELW 3)
INTRODUCTION
The mystery of Gods ways is sometimes hidden from the wise and
intelligent. Jesus associates with the lowly and outcast. Like Paul, we
struggle with our own selfish desires and seek Gods mercy and
forgiveness. We gather to be refreshed by Christs invitation: Come to me,
all you that are weary. Gathered around word, water, and meal, we find
rest for our souls.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
God of the covenant, in our baptism you call us to proclaim the coming of
your kingdom. Give us the courage you gave the apostles, that we may
faithfully witness to your love and peace in every circumstance of life, in
the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS

Let us pray.
God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning
us from our sin to live in your love. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit
that we may confess our sin, be reconciled with you, and live abundantly in
Jesus Christ, the Savior and Lord of all.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We
have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have
done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the
sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us,
and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67

The marriage of Isaac and Rebekah helped to fulfill Gods promise that
Abraham and Sarah would become the ancestors of many nations. While
her family urged delay, Rebekah eagerly set out to meet Isaac.

[Laban, Rebekahs brother, received a visitor who said,] 34I am Abrahams

servant. 35The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become
wealthy; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and
female slaves, camels and donkeys. 36And Sarah my masters wife bore a
son to my master when she was old; and he has given him all that he
has. 37My master made me swear, saying, You shall not take a wife for my
son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live; 38but you
shall go to my fathers house, to my kindred, and get a wife for my son.

I came today to the spring, and said, O LORD, the God of my master
Abraham, if now you will only make successful the way I am going! 43I am
standing here by the spring of water; let the young woman who comes out
to draw, to whom I shall say, Please give me a little water from your jar to

SECOND READING: Romans 7:15-25a

Life enslaved under sin is a catch-22 existence in which we know good but
do not do it and do things we know to be bad. Through Jesus Christ, God
has set us free from such a futile existence.

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do
the very thing I hate. 16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law
is good. 17But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within
me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I
can will what is right, but I cannot do it. 19For I do not do the good I want,
but the evil I do not want is what I do. 20Now if I do what I do not want, it
is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies

Jesus chides people who find fault with both his ministry and that of John
the Baptist. He thanks God that wisdom and intelligence are not needed to
receive what God has to offer.

generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one
another,

Benedict of Nursia, Abbot of Monte Cassino, died around 540

Tuesday, July 11, 2017
Benedict is known as the father of the Western monastic movement.
Educated in Rome, he went to live as a hermit, and eventually gathered a
community of monks around him. He wrote a rule for living in monasteries
that is used by Benedictines and adapted by others.

Nathan Sderblom, Bishop of Uppsala, died 1931

Wednesday, July 12, 2017
A winner of the Nobel Prize for peace for his efforts to unite peoples after
the First World War, Sderblom also called attention to the revival of early
church worship principles, and helped to lay the groundwork for the World
Council of Churches.

The Altar flowers are administered by the worship committee. The 2017
Altar Flower chart is posted on the bulletin board in the lower lobby and
there is attached to it a tear-off sheet for donors to complete and hand into
the office or place in the offering plate for proper publication in the
bulletin.
