World War II: Conquering the Content

Relevant SC Standards: Grade 5United States Studies: 1865 to the Present

5-4.5 Analyze the role of key figures during World War II, including Winston Churchill,
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, and Adolph Hitler.

5-4.6 Summarize key developments in technology, aviation, weaponry, and


communication and their effects on World War II and the United States economy.

5-4.7 Summarize the social and political impact of World War II on the American home
front and the world, including opportunities for women and African Americans in the
work place, the internment of the Japanese Americans, and the changes in national
boundaries and governments.

Description: This app lesson will develop 5th grade social studies students knowledge and
understanding of World War II and its effect on world history and U.S. history.

Instructional Objective: Students will read excerpts and watch videos that emphasize important
material from World War II and then sketch an outline of the important vocabulary, events, and
figures of World War II. Next, they will collect and arrange information about a key figure and
apply knowledge of propaganda and social effects of the war. Lastly, students will review and
assess gained knowledge about World War II.

Step 1: Students will examine the content on the World War II Interactive app by completing an
app scavenger hunt that is comprised of many different questions in which answers are located
throughout the app in text and video clips.

Step 2: Students will define vocabulary words and identify important events and figures from the
World War II unit using the Quizlet app. They can later use the flashcards and app-generated
tests to review for the projects and test assessments.

Step 3: Students will demonstrate an understanding of a key figure from World War II by
partnering up with another classmate to create a Facebook profile for one of figures using the
Facebook app. This will allow students to collect and discuss important ideas, beliefs, events,
etc. of their designated key figure. Also, each pair will use their figures Facebook page to
comment on the Facebook pages of three other groups to underline the relationship between
different figures.

Step 4: Students will illustrate their understanding of propaganda by creating their own World
War II propaganda posters using the Vanilla Pen Poster Maker app. Along with the poster made
on the app, students will evaluate the impact of their propaganda topic on the war in an informal
oral presentation.

Step 5: Students will review what they have learned by playing the World War II quiz I made on
the Kahoot App.
