GENERAL RULES AND GUIDELINES IN GENERAL MATHEMATICS 2016

1. The contest is open to all bona fide students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines
under the TTBO (The torch Bearer Organization) who have been selected by year level as
representatives.
2. The General Mathematics is a team contest which consists of three (3) members. Only one (1)
team shall represent each year level.
3. The contest proper will be held on December 2, 2016 from 1:30 pm onwards at ROOM A-103
4. Only the top three (3) teams with the highest cumulative scores from the quiz proper will be
awarded as 1st, 2nd 3rd place and participants.
5. The Basic Mathematics Contest shall cover the following subject matters: Algebra,
Trigonometry, Geometry, Business Mathematics, and Basic Mathematics .
6. No calculator, mathematical tables, and the like will be allowed during the entire contest.
7. Clarifications regarding the rules shall be entertained by the Committee of the Basic
Mathematics Contest before the start of the contest proper.
8. All teams are required to be at the contest site at least thirty (30) minutes before the scheduled
time.
9. Non-compliance with any of the stated general rules will mean disqualification from the
contest.

CONTEST PROPER
CONTEST/QUIZ PROPER

1. Each team should provide themselves illustration board, and eraser and an official writing board
(illustration board) where the name of the year level is indicated, Chalk are provided.
2. Each team will be accompanied/assisted by one (1) facilitator who will be responsible in
checking the answer of the contestant and any unfairness in the quiz proper.
3. Each question shall be read twice. After the second reading, the quiz master shall signal GO.
This is the only time when the timer shall start counting down the time allotted using the
following time table per question type.
a. Easy Questions- 5 seconds
b. Average Questions- 10 seconds
c. Difficult Questions- 15 seconds

4. Each team may start deliberating the answer with their teammates even if the quiz master is not
finished with the second reading. However, all team must raise the official board with their
official answer as soon as Time is up was announced by the quiz master. Then, the
contestant will raise the official board to show their answer.
5. The quiz master shall reveal the correct answer after all the team raised their board with official
answers. Only the board/s with correct answer/s will be read by the quiz master. The following
cases will be considered incorrect answers:
a. If the answer written is not in the simplest form;
b. If the correct value is written with incorrect unit;
c. If the answer written has wrong spelling

d. Failure of the team to raise the official board with answers within the allotted time
period
6. The questions for the entire quiz are divided into three (3) levels namely Easy, Average and
Difficult questions. Questions will be flashed on the screen while the quiz master is reading it.
Before reading the actual question in each category, the quiz master will announce the type of
question and the subject category of the selected question.
7. In each level category, the correct answer of each team will be given the following points and/ or
credits:
a. Easy Questions 1 points
b. Average Questions 3 points
c. Difficult Question 5 points
8. The team that will accumulate the highest score from the three (3) categories shall be declared
as the Champion. The second with the highest cumulative score will be the First Runner-Up
and the third highest team, the Second Runner-Up.
9. In cases where teams included in the top three (3) have the same cumulative scores at the end of
the three(3) level categories, clincher questions will be asked until a winner emerges in that
particular rank.

5. The contest will be held on December 01, 2016, Thursday at 1:00 P.M at the ROOM A-104. No
contestant will be allowed entry into the contest venue 15 minutes after the contest has started.
Contestants are therefore advised to be at the contest venue 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
6. The topic of the contest will be given 10 minutes before the contest begins.
7. The contest will be limited to one hour and thirty minutes only. The participants will be informed
thirty minutes prior to the end of the competition to wrap up their essays.
8. Contestants must bring their own pen (preferably 0.5 tip, black ink). Contestants are not allowed
to use pencil. Papers will be provided to the contestants by the committee at the start of the
contest.
9. No books, printed materials, dictionaries and the like shall be brought inside the contest room.
10. Mobile phones and other electronic gadgets must be turned off when the contest begins.
11. No coaching or assistance will be allowed from coaches, teachers, parents, fellow contestants,
and organizers once the contest starts.
12. The decision of the board of judges is final and irrevocable.
13. Winners of this contest will be determined after the contest.
14. Awarding ceremonies will be announced during the Culminating Night
