2. Details of the course for which change in description (s) is (are) being sought:

S.NO. Course No. Name of Course L P U

CE F214 Construction Materials 3 1 4

3. Existing course description(write topics only):

Different types of cements, chemical composition, properties and tests, coarse and fine aggregate for concrete,
tests on aggregates, grading of aggregates and its effect on concrete properties, chemical and mineral
admixtures, properties and tests on fresh and hardened concrete; transportation and placing of concrete, non-
destructive testing of concrete, durability of concrete, quality control and acceptance criteria of concrete,
Factors in the choice of mix proportions, Proportioning of concrete mixes by various methods BIS method of
mix design.; Special Concretes such as fibre reinforced concrete, high performance concrete, self-consolidating
concrete etc., Manufacturing/sources, classification, applications, properties and testing of bricks, blocks, tiles,
stones, aggregates, puzzolanas, flyash, lime, wood, timber, paints, tar, bitumen, cutback, emulsion, modified
bitumen, steel, non-ferrous metals, polymeric material, geo-synthetics, etc. Low cost and waste material in
construction. Latest, BIS, IRC & ASTM specifications and guidelines of all above mentioned material,
Construction equipment, classification, selection and economics.

4. Proposed course description:

admixtures, properties and tests on fresh and hardened concrete; transportation and placing of concrete, non-

Factors in the choice of mix proportions, Proportioning of concrete mixes by various methods BIS method of
mix design; Introduction to special concretes. Manufacturing/sources, classification, applications, properties and
testing of bricks, blocks, tiles, aggregates, lime, timber, paints, glass, bitumen, cutback, emulsion, modified
bitumen, steel, non-ferrous metals, polymeric materials, geo-synthetics, etc. Low cost and waste material in
construction. Latest, BIS, IRC & ASTM specifications and guidelines of all above mentioned material, and
Construction equipment.

5. Justification for the change in course description:

In this course, the all civil engineering construction materials are taught to the students as a theory, including
the procedure for testing of material properties. The CCDCA members felt that it will be beneficial for the
students if they are able to carry out the tests on all the construction materials and that is possible only if the
laboratory component is included in the course CE F214. Hence, it was suggested by the CCDCA members to
Academic and Resource Planning Division

include the laboratory component in to this course along with the theory. This course along with the laboratory
component will be of 4 credits (presently the course is of 3 credits).

The expert committee during the curriculum review and the CCDCA meeting it was observed that Tar has to be
removed from the course description. The existing course content was too large for a 3 credit course and
without the laboratory component. Hence, it was felt across the campus that it is would be effective if the
laboratory tests are included and make this course a 4 credit course. However, the students will be doing the
materials laboratory as a part of RCC (concrete) course.

6. Have the proposed changes been discussed in Departmental committee on academics (DCA ) and
the cross campus Departmental Committee on Academics (CCDCA)?
Yes, the proposed changes have been discussed in the DCA and the CCDCA with Pilani and Dubai campus.
