Essay section B

Q5
Spiderman heard a loud sound when he jumped down on to a wooden platform
without bending his legs as shown in Diagram 7.1. He repeated the action (at
the same height) but bend his legs while landing and heard a soft sound while
landing on the same platform as shown in Diagram 7.2. The Spiderman
experienced a change of momentum in both situations and he took shorter
time to complete his action when he landed without bending his legs

(i) What is meant by momentum?

(ii) Using Diagram 7.1 and 7.2, compare the change of momentums
experienced by the Spiderman. Relate the time for change of momentum and
the force acting on the Spiderman, deduce a relevant physics concept.

Q13
Diagram 9.1 shows a stationary pistol on a smooth surface. Diagram 9.2 shows
the pistol and bullet after the pistol has been fired by remote control.

(a) (i) What is the meaning of momentum.

(ii) State the total momentum of the pistol and bullet in Diagram 9.1. Using
Diagram 9.1 and Diagram 9.2, compare the total momentum before and after
the bullet is fired. Using Diagram 9.2, compare the magnitude and direction of
the momentum of the bullet and pistol. Name the physics principle that can be
applied to the motion of the bullet and pistol.

Q8
Diagram 10.1 and Diagram 10.2 show two methods of transfering a heavy load
of 50 kg from the ground to the lorry. The forces needed to transfer the heavy
load are not the same. However, the work done for both methods of transfering
are the same.

10.1

10.2
(a) What is meant by work?
(b) Using diagram 10.1 and 10.2, compare the forces needed to transfer the
load, the distance travelled by the load and the Relate the forces needed to
transfer the load and the distance travelled by the load with the work done
State the relationship between the potential energy gained by the load and the
work done on transfering the load.

Diagram 9.1 and Diagram 9.2 show two springs M and N. Both springs are of
the same material and same wire thickness but have different constant.

(i) What is meant by spring constant?

(ii) Using Diagram 9.1 and Diagram 9.2, compare the mass loaded by the
spring, the diameter of the spring and the extension of the spring.
Relate the mass loaded by the spring, the diameter of the spring and the
extension of the spring with the spring constant. [5m]

Q3 (SPM 2008) Section B

Diagram 3.1 shows two identical steel balls placed onto spring M and spring
N. Both springs are elastic a horizontal surface. The springs are pushed down
until the lengths of spring M and spring N are the same. [Assume spring M and
spring N are of the same material, same coil diameter and same original
length]

(i) What is the meaning of elasticity?[1 mark]

(ii) Using Diagram 3.1 and Diagram 3.2, compare the thickness of the spring
wire and the maximum height reached by the balls.

Relate the thickness of the spring wire with the maximum height of the ball to
make a deduction regarding the relationship between the thickness of the
spring wire and the elastic potential energy of the spring.

Q14: Section B
Diagram 9 shows a ball placed on the smooth incline plane at point P. The ball
is rolling down over the incline plane caused by gravitational potential energy.
Point Q and point R are at the middle of the incline plane and at the ground
respectively.

(a) What is meant by gravitational potential energy?

(b) (i) Using Diagram 9, compare the height of the ball, the gravitational
potential energy of the ball, the velocity of the ball and the kinetic energy of
the ball at point P and point Q. Deduce the relationship between the kinetic
energy and the gravitational potential energy of the rolling ball.
