4.2 Safe, Healthy, and Ethical Use

Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information
and technologies.

Reflection

The evidence presented for this standard is my Copyright Project, which I completed in ITEC
7445. This presentation was completed for an audience of teachers to make them aware of the
copyright laws and fair use laws when using images in their instructional presentations. This was
an individual assignment.

Standard 4.2, Safe, Healthy, and Ethical Use established the expectation that I model and
facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. For
this project I researched, modeled, and facilitated for my colleagues how to legally and
appropriately use images for instructional purposes in their classroom. I was able to provide my
fellow teachers with an overview of copyright and fair use laws, as well as provide them with
scenarios to practice their skills. By working through the scenarios with my fellow teachers, I
was able to model the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of using digital information to
facilitate learning. Each of the three scenarios required teachers to utilize the provided Fair Use
Checklist to analyze the situation and see if the teacher in the scenario was following protocol.

Completing this assignment allowed me the opportunity to strengthen my personal knowledge

about copyright laws. By having a more clear understanding of copyright and fair use laws, I am
able to support my fellow educators when questions should arise about using digital content in
their lessons. In the future, I would like to expand on this presentation to include the use of
audio and video as well. In this current digital age, teachers should be aware of all the copyright
and fair use laws that may apply to their instruction.

The work that took place in this assignment directly impacted my personal development, faculty
development, and student learning. The information about copyright and fair use was shared
with teachers to provide support for the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital
information and technologies. Teachers will now be able to provide students with the proper
resources to ensure they are following copyright and fair use protocols. The impact can be
assessed with student pre and post test data on copyright, as well as teacher surveys that analyze
faculty knowledge about copyright and fair use laws.
