FMST Quick Start Guide

Introduction
This Quick Start Guide contains basic set up and operational procedures for the
Universal Avionics Systems Corporation (UASC) Flight Management System
Trainer (FMST). More detailed descriptions are provided in the FMST Help System
located within the FMST program.
NOTE: Refer to UniNet at www.uasc.com/uninet for the latest Flight Management
System (FMS) Operators Manual as a companion reference to this guide.

Description
The FMST is a MS Windows based application that is intended to allow a user to
learn operations for the Universal Avionics FMS. The trainer is composed of
several components, including:
An emulator that executes real FMS source code
A simulated display of the FMS Control Display Unit (CDU)
A display of FMS generated annunciators
A flight trajectory model to simulate flight conditions
A simulated autopilot that flies to the FMS guidance
A Mode Control panel to make Heading, Altitude and Speed selections
Generic Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Navigation Displays (ND)
User controls to manipulate the simulation

FMST.01
Page 4 8 January 2015
FMST Quick Start Guide

The FMST is also capable of connecting with an FMS CDU by using a harness and
adapter. FMS entries are performed using the mouse to press the simulated
keyboard buttons. Entries to the simulation program can use the PC keyboard.
On program startup the FMS Trainer presents a CDU with the FMS turned OFF
and the simulation position, heading, altitude and airspeed at default locations /
settings.

There are several ways to prepare for an FMS flight:

1. Using an Initial Conditions preset scenario dropdown menu and pressing GO
2. Using the Set Position Button and window to search for a position by Identifier
3. Turning on the FMS and entering an airport identifier
Setting the Initial Conditions or Position sets the starting location and provides a
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) simulation of this position to the FMS.
The Initial Condition scenarios include not only position data, but initial heading,
altitude and airspeed to which the model will fly. The user can define multiple Initial
Condition scenarios that are stored in the FMST and chosen from a dropdown list.
Turning on the FMS will cause it to go through normal Power On Self-Test and
pause on the INIT page. Complete FMS initialization includes INIT, FPL and FUEL
page entries.

Getting Airborne
You have two options to get the FMST aircraft into the air:

1. Click the TOGA button on the Mode

Control Panel.

This starts the FMST aircraft down the runway with the throttles at full
power. The aircraft will automatically rotate and the FMST will
automatically engage the autopilot after liftoff. The autopilot will
remain in TOGA mode until new lateral and vertical modes are
selected. Select NAV to follow the FMS lateral guidance.
or

2. Click the Fly Now button on the Flight

Simulation toolbar.
This control immediately places the FMST aircraft into the air. If the
aircraft was previously on the ground and valid altitude and airspeed
targets were not set, the Fly Now button will set the airspeed to 250
knots and the altitude to 10,000 feet. Otherwise, the aircraft is set to
fly at the altitude and airspeed you specify. Select NAV to follow the
FMS lateral guidance.

Updating the Navigation Database

Download a Current Navigation Database
If you do not have an active navigation database service to use for the update, you
can get a current navigation database on UniNet at www.uasc.com/uninet (current
published prices apply).
1. Log in at the UniNet Login screen.
2. Once in UniNet, select the Navigation Data tab at the top of the page.
3. On the UniNet Navigation Data Download Center page, click the desired
navigation database to download. USB flash drive or SD Card navigation
databases are identified with an S after the part number prefix (such as
802SW2). Each navigation database subscription has an associated self-
extracting zip file (e.g., WORLDWIDE 2000' - 802S-W2 WORLDWIDE 2000').
4. On most browsers, a dialog box will appear that asks you to choose to either
Open/Run the file or to Save the file to disk.

FMST.01
Page 18 8 January 2015

5. Save the file to your HARD DRIVE, not the USB flash drive. Note the file
name and location.
6. Locate the folder after downloading and double-click the file to extract the
navigation database onto a USB flash drive or SD Card.
7. Depending on the version of the OS, you may see the security warning shown
below. If it appears, click Run.

8. The self-extraction program will ask for a location to unzip the navigation
database.

FMST.01

9. Browse to the USB flash drive uasc folder and click Ok.
10. Click the Install button to extract the data to the uasc folder on the USB flash
drive. The Installation progress window should display.
NOTE: If a Confirm file replace window displays, select Cancel. Do not choose
Yes or Yes to All to overwrite contents with new data.
Instead, select Cancel and access your USB flash drive
uasc folder, delete all contents, and repeat the
procedure.
(A USB flash drive card may hold only one folder at a
time. Storage of multiple databases on one USB flash
drive is not supported).

Designate a Simulated DTU Location

The FMST requires a Simulated DTU Location to load the navigation database. By
default, that location is set to either GPS FMS Trainer or SBAS FMS Trainer as
follows:
SBAS FMS Trainer C:\Documents and Settings\<MyAccount>\My
Documents\FMS Trainer V3-Docs\SBAS FMS Trainer\DTU.
GPS FMS Trainer C:\Documents and Settings\<MyAccount>\My
Documents\FMS Trainer V3-Docs\GPS FMS Trainer\DTU.
To change the Simulated DTU location:

1. From the menu bar at the top of the

screen, click Configuration to open the
dropdown menu.

2. Click Application and FMS Options to open the Options window.

FMST.01

3. From the FMS Settings tab, under DTU, click Browse to select the drive or
folder containing the navigation database update files.
4. Click OK to set the new location.
5. Click OK again to close the Options box and save the settings.

Load the Navigation Database

1. If not already done, press [ON/OFF DIM] to start up the FMS. The FMS will run
through a startup self-test and then display the INIT 1/1 page.
2. Click ACCEPT, LSK [5L] to accept the position on the INIT 1/1 page.
3. Click the [DATA] key to access the DATA 1/X page.
4. Click DISK, LSK [4L] to access the DISK MENU page.
5. Click DISK LOAD, LSK [2L]. A blank page with CHECKING DISK TYPE will
display while the FMS verifies the data storage device. Upon verification, the
DISK LOAD page will display.
6. Click LOAD, LSK [5L]. A box with ERASING MEMORY will display while the
FMS clears the memory before loading the database. As the database loads, a
load status in percent complete will display adjacent the LOAD STATUS line.
NOTE: Pressing the CANCEL LSK during the loading process will abort the
database load and will erase any part of the database already loaded. The
load procedure will have to be started over.
Once the load is complete, the LOAD STATUS field will display RCVD to indicate
the entire database has been loaded into memory. TESTING will then display
adjacent LSK [5R], indicating the FMS is testing of the database. Upon successful
test completion, the LOAD STATUS field will display PASS.
