FMST Quick Start Guide
Introduction
This Quick Start Guide contains basic set up and operational procedures for the
Universal Avionics Systems Corporation (UASC) Flight Management System
Trainer (FMST). More detailed descriptions are provided in the FMST Help System
located within the FMST program.
NOTE: Refer to UniNet at www.uasc.com/uninet for the latest Flight Management
System (FMS) Operators Manual as a companion reference to this guide.
Description
The FMST is a MS Windows based application that is intended to allow a user to
learn operations for the Universal Avionics FMS. The trainer is composed of
several components, including:
An emulator that executes real FMS source code
A simulated display of the FMS Control Display Unit (CDU)
A display of FMS generated annunciators
A flight trajectory model to simulate flight conditions
A simulated autopilot that flies to the FMS guidance
A Mode Control panel to make Heading, Altitude and Speed selections
Generic Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Navigation Displays (ND)
User controls to manipulate the simulation

The FMST is also capable of connecting with an FMS CDU by using a harness and
adapter. FMS entries are performed using the mouse to press the simulated
keyboard buttons. Entries to the simulation program can use the PC keyboard.
On program startup the FMS Trainer presents a CDU with the FMS turned OFF
and the simulation position, heading, altitude and airspeed at default locations /
settings.

Getting Airborne
You have two options to get the FMST aircraft into the air:
This starts the FMST aircraft down the runway with the throttles at full
power. The aircraft will automatically rotate and the FMST will
automatically engage the autopilot after liftoff. The autopilot will
remain in TOGA mode until new lateral and vertical modes are
selected. Select NAV to follow the FMS lateral guidance.

Setting a Heading
2. Click on the outer ring of the knob and while holding the
left button of the mouse down, move the mouse in a
circular pattern either left or right to set the heading. A
green pointer is displayed when the knob is active. You
can also turn the knob by putting the mouse cursor over
the knob and spinning the mouse wheel to set the
heading. The Mode Control Panel window must be the
active window for the mouse wheel to work.
This will cause the aircraft to begin flying on the selected heading if valid
airspeed and altitude values have been entered. Alternatively, clicking the
Jump to Heading button on the Flight Simulation toolbar will jump the
aircraft to the target heading.

NOTE: During Takeoff, the FMS and autopilot will be automatically coupled at 400
feet above the ground.
15. Wait for altitude to capture at 5,000 feet.
16. Reset altitude to 30,000 feet.
17. Click the FLC button under AP Modes. This will cause the plane to climb to
30,000 feet.
NOTE: Alternately, click the Fly Now button on the Flight Simulation toolbar to
immediately jump to 30,000 feet.
18. Click the Set Position button on the Flight Simulation toolbar.
19. Enter PAE (Paine Field) as the navigational aid and click OK.
20. Reset airspeed to 145 knots.
21. Set altitude to 7,000 feet.
22. Set heading to 161.
23. Since you relocated the aircraft closer to the destination, you need to relink the
FMS Navigation flight plan. To re-link, click [NAV] on the CDU to display
Navigation Page 1.
24. Click LSK [1L].
25. As necessary, click [PREV] or [NEXT] on the CDU to display PAE.
26. Click the reference number on the CDU keypad, then click [ENTER] twice.
FMS NAV is now re-linked.
27. Reset altitude to 1,000 feet.
28. Click [VNAV] on the CDU.
