Health Assessment

Health and wellness play an important role in an individuals everyday life. According to

the R. Donatella, (2011), there are six dimensions of health wellness. Maintaining these six

dimensions play an important role within an individuals daily routine because they balance each

other out. Without each other, the ongoing cycle that maintains health wellness, would not

function the way it is expected to. Therefor I will be discussing my health wellness along with

the cycle I may or may not maintain within my daily routine. The coherence of these dimensions

will then determine if my health is considered healthy or unhealthy.

According to my holistic assessment, my overall health from a scale to poor to good, my

health was at fair. It was a fair because within my physical assessment I didnt score high enough

within this section. My energy level on the daily fluctuates because half the time I am either

doing homework or wanting to sleep because I do not get enough sleep at night. Im so busy with

my baby that I dont really every acknowledge my sense of well-being. Since my well-being is

rarely taken into consideration then my resilience to colds, flus and allergies were at poor as well

as my speed of recovery from infections. My digestion is also at poor as well as my dietary

choices. My capacity to exercise is also at poor because of my babies eating routine. Having a

newborn requires them to eat two to three hours and if you get lucky every four hours. My

weight is also not appropriate for my frame due to having baby weight and water weight retained
from pregnancy. Due to poor physical wellness, my digestive system has limited me to eat or do

certain activities.

Due to my poor physical wellness results the cycle automatically became unbalanced.

Since it became unbalanced, my emotional and my social wellness right away became

unbalanced. According to the CDC, Regular physical activity can help keep your thinking,

learning, and judgment skills sharp as you age. It can also reduce your risk of depression and

may help you sleep better. Research has shown that doing aerobics or a mix of aerobic and

muscle-strengthening activities 3 to 5 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes can give you these

mental health benefits.(CDC,2015) My emotional health involves my self-esteem, self-

acceptance, closest relationships, friendships and acquaintances, which, were all subtopics within

those two categories. I scored poor because my physical image and health does not make me feel

comfortable due to my pregnancy. My pregnancy caused me to get stretch marks along with

saggy skin. It was easy to tone my body and before pregnancy I felt comfortable in my skin and

always wanted to be out because my self-esteem was always up and now it has gone down the

drain due to my poor physical wellness. Maintaining a good physical wellness is hard because

your body has altered in a negative manner that even your hair starts to fall out. My moods were

also affected in a negative manner due to my unbalanced hormones and my low self-esteem. I

feel as if my relationships with my family were also not healthy and it affected the rest of my

relationships. I invested most of my time into just one relationship that I did not see what it was

doing to the rest of my relationship.

My day literally revolves around my babys schedule, due to my husband working. There

is no one really to help me out, so any break I would get, revolved around getting some rest and

eating what I could. Before the baby, I would not prep healthy meals or keep myself hydrated so
that also affected my physical wellness. Now with the baby I am obligated to make smarter

decisions as far as the food I decide to put into my body.

As far as my spiritual wellness, I believe that is what has helped me get through many

tough situations especially within myself. Every day it is a battle with my inner self and

maintaining a relationship with God is what motivates to keep striving for more. At night when

all I want to do is sleep I take the time to read a couple verses from the bible because that allows

me to sleep with Grace in my heart. I believe having a spiritual routine and believing in a higher

power allows you to believe that you arent alone and gives some sort of living balance and

according to Donatelle a meaningful life, (R.Donatelle, 2011,page 5).

My environmental health I would say is not as bad because I try to provide a healthy

environment for my baby girl considering her defenses are not that strong. That would be

anything that involves food that I intake, considering I am breastfeeding, and keeping the

environment I am in clean. That also is what consumes my energy throughout the day that

doesnt allow me to have energy for physical activates.

I believe if I put more time into my physical wellness I would eat healthier, feel better

about my body, I would not be self-conscious, I would be out going with people, and I would

take care of myself more in the aspect of prioritizing time for myself. Prioritizing time for myself

would be my first goal. I would like to get some workouts in along with doing my favorite

hobbies, such as basketball or roller-skating. My second goal would be to cook healthier meals

that are also eco-friendly. I want to be able to help myself as well as to help my environment. I

would also like to go to church more often as one of my spiritual goals. I would also like to get

myself into giving youth groups discussions about God.


Finally, I believe that having these 6 dimensions in coherence with each other is

important due to that without each other they do not work without each other. I have poorly

applied these 6 dimensions into my life and plan to achieve goals by prioritizing my time for

myself. I will also achieve a healthier lifestyle by following this plan.
