Introduction:
Requirement of Networking
Every network requires specialized hardware and software to make them work. Following are the essential
components for network:
CLIENT COMPUTERS - End devices that users use to access the shared resources.
SERVER COMPUTERS - Computers that provide shared resources.
NETWORK INTERFACE CARD - NIC is an interface that enables the computer to communicate over the
network. Every computer must have a NIC in order to connect with the network.
COMMUNICATION LINKS - Communication links are physical media. Every computer network needs
some sort of media to transmit the data.
SWITCHES - When we have more than two computers in network, we cannot connect them directly. We
need a mediator device that allows us to connect all computers together. Switches do this job happily.
Each switch contains a certain number of ports. We can use an eight port switch to connect eight
computers.
ROUTERS - Router is an intermediate device that speaks all language of network. It makes
communication between two different networks.
ASSIGNING AN IP ADDRESS
Static IP Addresses
A static IP address is an IP address that always stays the same. If you have a web server, FTP server, or other Internet
resource that must have an address that cannot change, you can get a static IP address from your ISP. A static IP
address is usually more expensive than a dynamic IP address, and some ISPs do not supply static IP addresses. You
must configure a static IP address manually.
Dynamic IP Addresses
A dynamic IP address is an IP address that an ISP lets you use temporarily. If a dynamic address is not in use, it can
be automatically assigned to a different device. Dynamic IP addresses are assigned using either DHCP or PPPoE.
1. To change the computers IP address in Windows, type network and sharing into the Search box in the Start
Menu and select Network and Sharing Center when it comes up. If you are in Windows 8.x it will be on the
Start Screen itself, like the screenshot below of this article. If youre in Windows 7 or 10 itll be in the start
menu.
2. Then when the Network and Sharing Center opens, click on Change adapter settings. This will be the same
on Windows 7 or 8.x or 10.
5. Now select the radio button Use the following IP address and enter in the correct IP, Subnet mask, and
Default gateway that corresponds with your network setup. Then enter your Preferred and Alternate DNS
server addresses. Here were on a home network and using a simple Class C network configuration and
Google DNS.
6. Check Validate settings upon exit so Windows can find any problems with the addresses you entered. When
youre finished click OK.
7. Now close out of the Local Area Connections Properties window.
8. Windows will run network diagnostics and verify the connection is good. Here we had no problems with it,
but if you did, you could run the network troubleshooting wizard.
9. Now you can open the command prompt and do an ipconfig to see the network adapter settings have been
successfully changed.
