Sheriffs Office arrests
21 on child porn charges

The Greenville County
Sheriffs Office (GCSO) ar-
rested 21 local residents
in connection with child
pornography charges
Monday.
The arrests were made
following an investigation
by the Internet Crimes
Against Children (ICAC)
unit, and include two res-
idents from Taylors and
three from Greer.
All of these people are
in Greenville County,
said Sheriff Will Lewis.

A hotel could be in the
works in downtown Greer.
Last fall, real estate bro-
ker Yatish Patel submitted
an application for a Vol-
untary Cleanup Contract
to the South Carolina De-
partment of Health and
Environmental Control
(DHEC).
That contract states,
Sycamore Greer will ac-
quire the Property and
intends to demolish the
existing structures and re-
develop the Property with
a hotel and for commer-
cial and retail uses.
The redevelop[ment]
will include surface park-
ing and a multi-level park-
ing garage, the contract,
numbered 16-6443-NRP,
said.
The property being as-
sessed is approximately
2.7 acres, located at 104,
108 and 112 North Main
Street; and 105 E. Poin-
sett Street. According to
the documents, the prop-
erty consists of vacant

Wellford Council swears
in two familiar faces

Two Wellford Council
members have been sworn
in following an uncontest-
ed election.
Sherry Santana began
her second consecutive
term in office while Wy-
mond Wilkins started his
fourth term.
Wilkins served on coun-
cil from 1999 to 2007, and
again beginning in 2013.
Wellford City Council
also reappointed Lynne
Lingo as the Municipal
Clerk and Adam Bach as
the City Attorney. Council
member Glenna Holcombe
will serve as the Mayor Pro
Tem.
In other business, coun-
cil unanimously approved
two law enforcement
assistance and support
agreements, one with
Spartanburg County and
the other with surround-
ing municipalities.

Honeywell
expands

Honeywell will expand
its Greer aerospace facili-
ty.
The company is adding
up to 5,000-square-feet of
manufacturing space, cre-
ating 30 skilled, high-tech
jobs.
The aerospace industry
is one of the most com-
petitive industries in the
world. South Carolina,
in particular, hosts near-
ly 200 aerospace-related
companies. Our facility
expansion means that we
not only increase our ca-
pabilities, but Honeywell
continues to contribute to
South Carolinas burgeon-
ing aerospace economy,
said Jason Lewandows-
ki, senior director for the
Greer site. This invest-
ment positions our man-
ufacturing network for
future growth to help us
maintain leadership and
drive innovation. We will
benefit greatly from South
Carolinas wealth of engi-
neering and manufactur-
ing talent to strengthen
our technical capabilities
and provide production
support from Greer.
The expansion is asso-
ciated with Honeywells
airfoil machining and spe-
cial processes, according
to officials. The company
will invest more than $10
million to develop, main-
tain and expand its site.
The South Carolina De-
partment of Commerce
has committed addition-
next 20 years to support
the continued progress of
the facility, Honeywell of-
ficials said.

pansion at Honeywells

the third quarter of 2017
with an estimated comple-
tion date in 2019.

for four hours with docu-

was a DOT-reform element
in the gas tax bill that was
passed this year.
The commission has
been responsible all along

when, how to do it, and
how to spend money allo-
cated by the General As-

While the gas tax bill
didnt fix everything, it
did give us clearer lines of
accountability if we will
use them.

member Greg Wood to be-
come the Mayor Pro Tem.

vacated seat open at noon

been drawn and is now
available at a number of
local businesses.
Alberts Cartoon Maps
has released its first hand-
drawn map of Greer since
1993, and Owner Diane
Norton said the project
has been a great way to
mark growth and cele-
brate tradition.
A lot of people that
have seen (the 1993 map)
can go back and look at
how things have changed,
Norton said. Thats what
were looking to do. This
is a fun, informative way
of getting your name out
there. While youre pro-
moting your business,
youre promoting every-
one else at the same time.

in city limits. Is there no law or
ordinance against this?
A: Yikes! If fireworks were 50
percent off last week, theyre
practically free now.
Last week in the mailbag we
tackled the issue of lingering
firework noise after the fourth.
But since some of you are
still waking up to the booming
sounds of patriotism, we asked
the city for specifics.
According to folks at the
City of Greer, municipalities
may not ban the use of fire-
works because the discharge of
fireworks is permissible under
state law.
A city can regulate the time
and place fireworks may be
discharged, but violations are
enforced using a civil, rather
than criminal penalty.
Fireworks are not regulated
in the City of Greer other than
the fact that they are prohib-
ited during parades and city
events (unless approved by the
City).
If the disturbance continues
for a long period of time or
at irregular hours, the police
department could make a de-
cision regarding disturbing the
peace or other charges.
For those of you still setting
them off, try to do it at a time
that is considerate of your
neighbors.
Whether they are a veteran
with PTSD or a family trying to
keep their pets calm, its hard
on everybody waking up to fire-
works in mid-July.

has come a long way in SC
It was ten years ago this month that plans
began to develop for what became the states
Fiscal Transparency Website -- one of the first
such sites in the country.
The goal was toprovide citizens easy access
to details about how state government spends
their money.
At the time, the idea of making itemized,
monthly reports of state agencies expenditures
available on the Internet was considered revo-
lutionary. Today, however, every state has such
a website.
Over the past decade, the open government
movement has flourished: More information is
on the web, and in easy to find formats. Meet-
ings of public bodies are being live-streamed on
the Internet. Laws requiring public officials to
provide government records to citizens are be-
ing strengthened and modernized.
Here in South Carolina, nearly 40 towns, cit-
ies and counties now voluntarily show their
itemized expenditures on the web. All ofthe
statesschool districtsare now required to post
their transactions online, as are all public col-
leges and universities.
Visitors to the Comptrollers Office web-
site,cg.sc.gov, can find links to state contracts
with vendors, as well as information about trav-
el costs for each state agency, economic devel-
opment grants, and the revenue impact of the
states various tax credits and exemptions.
In June, the latest round of enhancements
to the Fiscal Transparency Website were an-
nounced. Visitors to the site can click links to
see if theyre owed money under the Treasur-
ers Unclaimed Property program, view cam-
paign contributions to political candidates,
track spending bills supported by each of our
states Congressmen, and see whos paying
lobbyists to get influence at the State House.
Theres also a link to see how lottery proceeds
are being used (Because lottery revenuesand
expenditures arenot processed through the
statewide accounting system that my office op-
erates, the state had previously been unable to
track these funds).

travel to visit relatives, take

Growing up, I remember trips
to the lake and to the beach.
When I was in high school,
we often took day trips to Lake
Hartwell, where we floated on

The competition in All-
Star baseball is heating up
in July, and several local
teams remain in the mix.
The Northwood 11U
Majors won their district
tournament last week, ad-
vancing to the state tour-
nament at Corey Burns
Field.
In the state tournament,
the 11U team topped Aik-
en, Summerville and Lau-
rens. Northwood needs
only one more win over
Laurens to advance to re-
gionals in North Carolina.
Its been great. The kids
are wonderful, Jason
Dawsey, the teams head
coach, said. We get to
coach a lot of them during
the regular season, and
they work hard. Theyve
been practicing four days
a week since June, so its
nice to see all this hard
work paying off for them.
We just want them
to have fun, he said.
Theyve done all the hard
work, now its just time to
play ball.
The winner of the state
championship advances to
the Tournament of State
Champions in Greenville,
North Carolina to take on
teams from Georgia, Flor-
ida, North Carolina and
Tennessee.
The Northwood 10U Mi-
nors are also playing in the
state tournament in Sum-
merville. They will return
this Thursday in hopes of
winning a state title.
Dawsey said Northwood,
which recently had a 12U
team make it to the Little
League World Series, is
continuing its tradition of
excellence.
Northwood has always
been very, very good, he
said. Between Northwood in July.

been really competitive.
Ive seen a lot of quality
players in both leagues.
Yes, you do see a spike
in interest when one of
your locals makes it to

Lane. We had our ups
and downs. Practice (on
Wednesday) didnt go very
well, but we had a real-
ly fast Tundra, and (crew
chief) Rudy Fugle made
great calls from the pit
box after I made a mistake
and spun out.
That mistake came on
Lap 27, with Bell sliding
out of control in his No.

After all was said and
done, the dominant car
won the race but not
without extreme compli-
cations.
With just over a lap to go
in Saturday nights Quak-
er State 400 at Kentucky
Speedway, Martin Truex
Jr. held a lead of more
than 15 seconds over sec-
ond-place Kyle Larson,
with only eight cars re-
maining on the lead lap.
But before Truex could
take the white flag signal-
ing the final lap, the en-
gine in Kurt Buschs Ford
expired, dumping oil on
the 1.5-mile track. Under
the caution, only Truex
stayed out, with all other
lead-lap cars coming to pit
road for fresh tires.
I thought we were
dead, Truex said. I
thought we were done.
On old rubber and with
a hard shove from Larson,
who lined up behind him
in the outside lane, Truex
surged past Kyle Busch
through the first two cor-
ners and held the lead un-
til a wreck behind him at
the end of the first over-
time lap caused the ninth
caution of the night and
froze the field with Truex
in the lead.
The victory completed
a perfect night for Truex,
who won the first and
second stages and then
took the checkered flag.
The win was Truexs third
of the season, his first at
Kentucky and the 10th of
his career. Truex increased

During the final 10 laps,
Jones closed to the rear
bumper of Bells Toyota,
but couldnt find a way

on Lap 42, after Rhodes
made a pit stop and took
the green flag in 13th.
On the restart lap,
Rhodes made a move on

middle and TJ Bell on the
outside. The trucks ran out
of room as they entered
Turn 3, with Christopher
Bell moving down slightly
on Rhodes Tundra, which

One dedicated teach-

dents and a community
of faithful supporters are
spending their summer
knee-deep in jeans, shoes,
handbags and hangers in
order to make a difference
in their school.
Byrnes High science
teacher Rhonda Dodson,
along with her Interact
Club volunteers, began
working the week after
school was out on their
largest service project
since the clubs organiza-
tion in Februarya school
clothing closet.
This is something Ive little more fortunate than
wanted to do for proba-
bly a decade, and we nev-
er had the space for it. So
its always in my mind,
said Dodson, a former In-
teract Club member her-
self, who introduced the
idea at Byrnes. When the
new wing opened up in
February, then that freed
up these spaces to be uti-
lized for the storesAnd
it emerged from a store
thanks to the community
Interact Club volunteers sorted, folded and hung donated
clothing to be displayed in the stores.
Greer experience breaks stereotypes for students

When French students
Alexandre, Justine and
Coralie first came to the
United States at the begin-
ning of June, they had no
idea what to expect from
their American host fami-
lies.
But after almost a
month of living the aver-
age southern American
life, their views of America
have changed dramatical-
ly.
We had some stereo-
types before we come
[sic], and we were wrong,
said Alexandre. Like, we
thought that people in
big cities were rude, but
we were really wrong. We
arent a part of the [Amer-
ican] family, but we seem
to be.
Justine agreed, In
France, if you dont know
the person, then you usu-
ally dont talk to them. But
everyone in the stores in
America wants to talk to
us.
The three students are
part of a larger group of
French kids, ages 12 to 18,
who are invited to come
to the States for several
weeks during the summer
in order to practice their
English skills. Student
Exchange, run locally by
Raluca Goineau, works
with programs, such as
Terre des Langues of
France, to connect Amer-
ican host families with
French students for the
summer. The program not
only benefits the students
but also gives American
families a chance to expe-
rience a different culture
as well.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I
am an 86-year-old male
who unfortunately lost my
sense of smell and, to a
large degree, my sense of
taste as a result of taking
fluticasone propionate
nasal spray (50 mcg, one
spray in each nostril once
a day). This drug was pre-
scribed by my doctor. Af-
ter finding out that I could
not smell fresh coffee
even when I put my face
over the open container
and sniffed, I knew I had
a problem.
I mentioned this to
another doctor (the pre-
scribing doctor had trans-
ferred), and he casually
mentioned that that hap-
pens and that it could
take a year to come back.
Well, the year has come
and gone, and I havent
regained my sense of
smell. The literature that
accompanies this drug
does mention that a possi-
ble side effect is the loss
of the senses of smell
and taste. But this comes
only after reading through
more than five columns of
small prin.
It may not seem like a
big deal to be unable to
smell the coffee, but I am
also unable to smell nat-
ural gas, and living in a
house with a furnace, hot
water heater, clothes dry-
er and cooktop stove all
powered by natural gas, it
becomes a serious prob-
lem. I am hoping that you
can give me some advice
as to how I can restore my
senses of smell and taste.

found the warning that
fluticasone, like other na-
sal steroids, can cause
alterations in taste and
smell. However, I couldnt
find in the published liter-
ature a case of someone
losing his or her sense of
smell entirely from nasal
steroids. Some blood pres-
sure medicines have been
known to do it, as can
nutritional deficiencies,
tumors and Sjogrens syn-
drome. Exposure to some
chemicals can cause tem-
porary loss of smell. Alz-
heimers and Parkinsons
diseases sometimes cause
loss of sense of smell.
Anytime the sense of
smell is lost, most peo-
ple notice a dramatic loss
of taste as well: This may
be because the aromas of
food are the most import-
ant contributor to flavor.
Unfortunately, after a
year it is likely the loss
will be permanent, and
I dont know of any way
to bring it back. When re-
searching your question,
I found many references
to studies that looked at
fluticasone as a treatment
for loss of sense of smell,
which gives further evi-
dence to the unfortunate

Schools, Food and Nutri-
tion Services will be par-
ticipating in the Summer
Food Service Program
during the months June,
July and August.
Nutritionally balanced
meals will be provided to
all children regardless of
race, color, sex, disabili-
ty, age or national origin
during summer vacation
when school breakfasts
and lunches are not avail-
able. All children 18 years
old and younger, if an open
site, are eligible for meals
at no charge, and there
will be no discrimination
in the course of the meal
service. The programs are
only approved for geo-
graphical areas of need
where 50 percent or more
of the children qualify for
free and reduced-price
meals during the school
