Mental Health
A positive state of well-being characterized by the
absence of mental and behavioral disorders. It is
also the successful adaptation to changes in the
internal or external environment.
We will talk about the different mental illness later
Kailangan nating mag-adjust upang maiwasan natin
yung sinasabi nilang depresyon
Huwag mong hayaan na sila lagi ang nag-a-adjust para
sayo kasi may limitasyon ang lahat ng bagay. Puwede
silang magsawa at hindi na muling magpapakita pa

2|Page
A state of emotional, psychological, and social
wellness as evidenced by satisfying interpersonal
relationships, effective behavior & coping,
positive self-concept, and emotional stability
In order to consider ourselves as mentally healthy, we
must possess the following criteria of mental health
Criteria for Mental Health
1) Self-acceptance or Self-awareness
a. Being aware of ones feelings, thoughts
and values
b. Realistic awareness of abilities and
limitations

stress. Kung walang stress, walang
madedepress.
2) Perception of Reality
a. Ability to distinguish real world from
dream, fact from fantasy
b. Ability to perceive the world as it really is
and people as they really are

seen on the screen
3) Autonomous behaviour
a. Ability to govern self
b. Independent in thought and action
c. Considers opinions of others

4|Page
4) Mastery of Environment
Mastery, Mastery, Mastery, Mastery of
Environment
a. Ability to adapt/adjust and behave
appropriately in situations
b. Able to perform tasks or problems

Halimbawa: Sa tagal ng pagsasama niyo ng

nanay mo, kinailangan niyang lumisan upang
lumisan at makipagsapalaran sa mundo ng mga
banyaga nang sa gayoy matustusan ang
pangagailangan niyong magkakapatid
Sa sitwasyong ito, kailangan nating mag-adjust.
Bakit?

5|Page
Kasi pag hindi tayo nag-adjust, madedepress
tayo. At ito ang isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit
tayo nagkakroon ng sakit sa pag-iisip
Sino sa inyo ang gusting gumala sa daan?
Siyempre wala
Gusto niyo bang tumira sa mental hospital?
Siyempre hindi
Siyempre ayaw natin tong mangyari sa ating
buhay kayat matuto tayong mag-adjust para
maiwasan ang depresyon
5) Integrative Capacity
Integrative in the sense that your mind and body
must be in harmony. Halimbawa, nu positive ti
panpanunutem, siyempre positive met ti
maubraam
a. Ability to learn from experiences
b. Ability to tolerate anxiety and frustrations

Halimbawa, nagbreak kayo ng jowa mo.

Siyempre paiyak-iyak, pasenti-senti, ayaw
kumain, apay adda kanyana jay kaldero ti
innapoy yo ta dika mangan?
Nagmumukmok sa ibabaw ng lamesa,
naghihintay hanggang sumapit ang umaga nang
muli siyang makasama (rap)

6|Page
At pag nakamove on ka na, sabihin mo sa ex
mo:
Past is past never been back but if you come
back welcome back and I will give you back to
back na lipak
6) Growth & Development and Self-actualization
a. Oriented toward growth and self-
actualization (satisfaction in life)

Kailangan nating magmature upang maabot

natin ang tinatawag nilang self-actualization
(satisfaction in life). yung feeling na wala ka ng
mahihiling pa kasi kuntento ka na sa buhay
Aside from the five criteria mentioned, there are
other criteria of mental health and these are.
Other Criteria of Mental Health
Ability to love oneself
Ability to face reality
Ability to find meaning and purpose in life
Ability to know the world where he lives
Ability to accept ones limitations or capacities
Ability to work productively with others

So may we have a recap about what we have tackled

earlier. What are the different criteria of mental health?

7|Page
First is Self-acceptance/Self-awareness. Second,
Perception of reality. Third, Autonomous behaviour.
Fourth, Mastery of Environment. Fifth, Integrative
capacity. Sixth, growth and development and self-
actualization
There are also other criteria of mental health as follows:
Ability to love oneself
Ability to face reality
Ability to find meaning and purpose in life
Ability to know the world where he lives
Ability to accept ones limitations or capacities
Ability to work productively with others

For the mental illness, may we listen to Ms. Cecille

2) Ineffective interpersonal relationships
a. Inability to communicate with other
person
b. Miscommunication with other people
3) Dissatisfaction with ones place in the world

4. Define stress. Good afternoon guys!

Have you ever experience stress?
What comes to your minds when you heard stress?
So, lets define what is stress. LCD
STRESS Laptop
The term stress, was coined by Hans Selye in Projector Quiz bee
1936, and it is defined as the non-specific LECTURE 15 minutes Microphone (Illustration board and
response of the body to any demand for Sound system chalk)
change.
stress response is the bodys way of protecting
itself. When working properly, it helps one to
stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency
situations, stress can save life giving a person
extra strength to defend.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF STRESS
1. EUSTRESS
5. Differentiate the

energy and motivation to meet our

Examples:

1. When you are excited to take an exam, kasi

nakapag review kayo at alam niyo na papasa
kayo sa exam niyo.

10 | P a g e
2. When you see your crush. diba na mo-motivate
tayo na magreview kapag nakikita natin sila?
3. Holiday seasons. Bonding with families and
relatives. diba pumupunta tayo sa beach, o di
kaya pumupunta tayo sa mga ibat- ibang lugar
para mamasyal.
4. Playing sports. kapag intrams niyo kapag
nanalo yung team niyo diba napaka saya niyo
pag ganun?
5. Graduating from college. kapag nakapag tapos
na tayo ng pag-aaral diba ang gaan ng
pakiramdam.
6. Starting a new job. Kapag may trabaho na tayo
at kapag nakikita natin mga magulang natin o di
kaya mga may trabaho na na nagswe- sweldo
na.
SO, if theres a good stress there is also a bad stress.
2. DISTRESS
- It is also called a bad stress
- Is a continuous experience of feeling
overwhelmed, oppressed, and behind in our
responsibilities. It is the all encompassing sense
of being imposed upon by difficulties with no light
at the end of the tunnel.

11 | P a g e
Examples:
1. When theres a lot of requirements, assignments,
and lot of exams.
2. Presence of illness. kapag may sakit tayo diba
minsan hindi na tayo nakaka-kain, hindi tayo
makapag concentrate sa mga ginagawa natin
pag ganun
3. Death of a family member. kapag hindi natin
inaasahan yung pagkamatay ng miyembro ng
ating pamilya.
4. Break- ups with your girlfriends and boyfriends.
kapag naghiwalay na kayo diba ang hirap mag
adjust? Minsan nga hindi na tayo nakaka- kain,
hindi na tayo nakaka pag concentrate sa mga
ginagawa natin
6. Enumerate Sources of Stress
sources of stress Environment
The environment can also lead to stress. The
stressors that are found in the surroundings are called LCD
environmental stressors. Everyday life is full of LECTURE 10 minutes Laptop Quiz bee
environmental stressors that cause minor irritations. We Projector (Illustration board and
tend to avoid or confront these stress that we experience Microphone chalk)
every day. Some examples of such stress include Sound system
pollution and noise. Smoke emitted by the vehicles in the

12 | P a g e
street, from the todok-todok like isaw, barbeque and
others along the roads, classrooms that are not cleaned
and burning of garbage in the surroundings are common
examples of air pollution. And noise. Noise affects the
lives of million people, the annoyance from the sound
that is heard such as the sounds of alarm clocks waking
you up in the morning, shouting of your classmates or
neighbors, the beeping of horns from the vehicles and
loud music, arguments, gossips heard all around us.
What would you feel when your room is unorganized?
When objects are scattered everywhere? What would
you do if you were in this situation?
Social
Can alter a persons relationship with others.
Social stress are sometimes felt under these conditions.
Have you ever wandered asking yourself these
questions? Or have you ever experienced these kind of
situations in your life?
Out of sight and mind - This part of social stress involves
you stressing that by not constantly seeing certain
people, they will stop inviting you to things and wanting
to hang out. Or if you deny too many invites you will not
be invited anymore.

13 | P a g e
Are you fun enough? - Now, this goes back to number
one. Say you do go to everything you're invited too, but
so and so does not go that often and still gets invited to
literally EVERYTHING and everyone brings them up
when they do not show up. You start second guessing
yourself if you're that fun or fun enough like them.
Your person hanging out with their other friends - Now
you do not get jealous of things, but people is another
story. This is the classic you have friends, but they also
have friends that you're not friends with. You always
wonder where you stand or who they would choose if
they had to, sometimes they feel like they are outcasts.
The Person You Usually Go Out With Cannot Go - What
to do? Go out without them? But with who?! Either way
you stress because you either stress to find someone or
stress about not going.
Third wheeling - This is the worst. Whether you knew it
was going to happen or not. You constantly feel awkward
for the couple you're third wheeling and what other
people are thinking. Why did your friend have to couple
up with someone when you came together and know no
one else here? Then the pressure to find someone to end
this third wheeling situation could send you in panic
attack.

14 | P a g e
Texting - The person you're supposed to go out with is
not texting you back, but you need an answer do you
double text? Maybe even call? Oh no they just read your
text and still have not replied. What is wrong with you!?
Being Bullied Now this type of social relationship is
common. It can threaten a persons physical and
emotional safety and has an impact within their social
lives. They may feel discomfort or uneasy when there are
bullies around affecting now their communication with
others.
Emotional
Negative or nonconstructive feelings about self
and others. Emotional stressors causes emotional
distress or pain to the person suffering from it. They
trigger negative feelings such as anxiety, anger,
jealousy, hatred, heartache and depression. Examples
include:
Parental pressure. The feeling we get from our parents.
This places a heavy burden on their part. Sometimes or
mostly, we cannot keep up to their expectations.
Maintaining high grades until the end in all the subjects
at school. Another example, in a situation like no matter
how hard someone strives their very best and the result
is either good or not, some do not feel like their effort are

15 | P a g e
not being appreciated by their parents, it may cause
depression on the part of the child. Being compared to
others have a great impact to a person, it may cause
anxiety, that sometimes make them feel like they are
inferior to others. Those who are constantly compared by
their parents to other student may gradually withdraw
themselves from the family. They withdraw because they
do not want to cause their parents further
disappointments and hurt.
Arguments with friends or loved ones. They say that the
more two persons argue with each other, the more closer
they are? Do you believe in that? Sometimes those
arguments may be taken too far, to the extent that they
exchange hurtful words without realizing it. Well, having
arguments that didnt go well may lead to stress. They
may feel anger during the argument, fighting for their own
stands. After thinking and thinking it over and after
realizing what they have done was wrong, they feel
depressed about it. This may have a greater portion of
the time for that individual to have focus with.

7. Discuss Characteristics of Stress
characteristics of 1. Stress affect different people in different ways LCD Quiz bee
stress depending on: LECTURE 10 minutes Laptop (Illustration board and
A. STRESS ITSELF How suddenly it appears, Projector chalk)
how long it lasts and how forceful it is. Microphone
B. REACTION TO STRESS Depends upon Sound system
limitations and potentialities of the individual
dealing with stress.

Example: Merong dalawang studyante na

mababa ang nakuha sa quiz nila si A at B, si
student A ginawang MOTIVATION yun para
sa susunod na quiz ay pumasa na siya, at
habang si student B naman ay balewala lang
yun sakanya.
C. IMPORTANCE OF CERTAIN STRESS
- What is the meaning of stress to a person.
2. Whenever a person encounters stress from
whatever source, he attempts to adopt to it.
Example: Diba kapag nasstress tayo gumagawa
tayo ng paraan para mawala ito?
Sino dito ang kumakain ng chocolates
kapag nasstress?
Nanonood ng TV?
Kumakain ng mga masasarap?

17 | P a g e
Namamasyal sa mall?
Lumalabas with friends?
Oh kaya natutulog maghapon?

*Gagawa at gagawa pa rin tayo ng paraan

npara tayo ay makalimot sa stress.
3. Any stressor itself is a source of a new stressor.
Example: Bumagsak ka sa Final grade mo,
nastress ka na nga, masstress ka nanaman
dahil mapapagalitan ka nanaman sa magulang
mo.
4. No single stress or etiologic factor can cause a
disease.
Example: Experience multiple stress and the
body can no longer be able to cope it up it will
lead now to sickness or a disease.
5. Stress of whatever nature if too prolonged or too
severe can eventually overwhelm any person.
No matter how he has develop his adaptive
mechanism.
- Even if the patient has develop his adaptive
mechanism but if these is stressors is too prolonged,
the body may fail on coping with it.

18 | P a g e
6. Stress does not always lead to stress
-For example you have exam for tomorrow and this
stressed you out and then you exerted much effort in
the exam and eventually you pass the exam thus this
stress does not result to distress because this makes
you motivated to do good.
7. A stress is not always something to be avoided
-Stress is already part of our everyday life and this
stress help us to protect ourselves because it has been
said that this is the response of the body.
8. Stress is always a part of human life.
-As what I have been said earlier Stress is already part
of our everyday life and this is also the normal response
of our body.

bad experiences that can be beneficial to your health and

safety. Lets review our past lessons in science. Your

body responds to stress by releasing hormones and

increasing your heart and breathing rates. Your brain

gets more oxygen, giving you an edge in responding to

a problem. In the short term, stress or eustress helps you

cope with tough situations but if it becomes chronic or

palagian it can cause different kinds of symptoms that

can affect our body.

Stress can be triggered by the pressures of

everyday responsibilities at work and at home. So

kagaya ng mga diniscuss kanina ni jaycee, maraming

cause ng stress. Academics, relationships and the like.

CHRONIC STRESS can cause a variety of

symptoms and can affect your overall health and well-

being. So as we go on, I will show some symptoms that

you can relate with..

20 | P a g e
Stress affects our different organs, For example,

so anong organ ang ginagamit natin sa pag-iisip? Our

brain, RIGHT? Stress can also affect our brain which

causes now, number 1 is HEADACHE,most of us

experience this one.

So a trivia for headache.(eat 10-12 pieces of almonds,

equivalent of two aspirins for migraine headache )

PAIN - When the body is stressed, muscles tense up.

Muscle tension is almost a reflex reaction to stress the

body's way of guarding against injury and pain.

When muscles are taut and tense for long periods

of time, this may trigger other reactions of the

body and even promote stress-related disorders.

For example, both tension-type headache and

migraine headache are associated with chronic

21 | P a g e
muscle tension in the area of the shoulders, neck

and head.

FATIGUE - extreme tiredness. Lets set an example,

from the common causes of stress kanina which is

academics-- nafeel niyo na ba yung super dami nyong

exams or projects in a week and then at the end of that

you feel very tired or extreme weariness. That is fatigue

caused by stress

WEIGHT GAIN/LOSS - most of us if we feel very

stressed, we either do binge eating or yung tinatawag

nating stress eating or we might also lose our appetite

kaya yun dina tayo kumakain which causes now weight

or weight loss.

We can also experience UNEXPECTED HAIR LOSS in

severe stress.

HEART PALPITATIONS AND HIGH BLOOD

PRESSURElike what I said I while ago, stress can

22 | P a g e
affect our organs, like our heart, in stress our heart tends

to pump more blood for our brain to get more oxygen

kaya tayo nagpapalpitate. For example kapag nakita mo

si crush, diba lumalakas ng konti yung heartbeat mo?

And kapag lumalakas ang pagpapump ng heart

tumataas din and BP, so small stress like that is good

pero kapag chronic na ang stress mo it can cause now

high blood pressure and kapag super bilis ng tibog ng

puso mo it can lead to heart attack and can also lead to

death..

For ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE

Stress can make you breathe harder. That's not

a problem for most people, but for those with

asthma or a lung disease such as emphysema,

getting the oxygen you need to breathe easier

can be difficult.

And some studies show that an acute stress

such as the death of a loved one can actually

23 | P a g e
trigger asthma attacks, in which the airway

between the nose and the lungs constricts.

In addition, stress can cause the rapid breathing

or hyperventilation that can bring on a panic

attack in someone prone to panic attacks.

Working with a psychologist to develop relaxation

and breathing strategies can help.

Aside from physical stress, it can also cause

emotional symptoms like

Difficulty Concentrating--- For example gaya ng sabi

ko kanina, you have lots projects, in addition to that your

teacher gave another set of assignments and then

dagdag mo pa yung away niyo ng bf or gf mo. You cant

really concentrate right? I know most us relate dito. And

then next to this, if you cant concentrate we tend to make

so many errors (INCREASED ERRORS). We can also

suffer from..

24 | P a g e
POOR DECISION MAKING - sa dami ng ginagawa and

iniisip mo, you cant already prioritize your works, Aside

from that..

MOOD SWINGS - stress can also cause mood swing,

ang saya saya mo kanina pero dahil binigyan ka ng

super daming projects yun beast mode ka na and kapag

lumala it can now cause..

ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

Stress can also lead to unhealthy coping strategies like

DRINKING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, SMOKING,

USE OF PROHIBITED DRUGS AND STRESS EATING.

Most us is doing stress eating but always remember

FOOD IS A FUEL NOT A THERAPY

9. Enumerate the COMMON STRESSORS

common A. AT HOME RELATED STRESSORS:
stressors faced What are the usual stressors that you experienced
by the students before? LCD
Love life, heartbreaks, exams, strict parents. Laptop

25 | P a g e
So coming from you this are common stressors that you LECTURE 15 minutes Projector Quiz bee
have experienced. Since weve been in the stage too, we Microphone (Illustration board and
also come with a list of common stressors that you are Sound system chalk)
experiencing. These stressors could arise within the
school and other factors such as growth and
development.
1. Parental pressure
It is a thing that your parent wants.
Parents want their children to succeed in
school. Some parents compare their
children to people who are already
successful in their filed or chosen line of
work and pressured them to become like
them. That sometimes prohibits them
engage in activities like engaging some
romantic relationship.

2. Overprotective/ neglectful parents

Who among you have over protective parents? How do
you perceive this?
Positive or negative?
Parents are too strict with their children
most especially going outside their home.
They are all paranoid o afraid what may

26 | P a g e
happen to their children. Students can
hardly develop independence because
parents are always deciding what is the
right or best thing that they thought for
their children.
If there are protective parents there are
also neglectful parents in which that they
not be providing guidance or correcting
their childrens misdemeanor. Parents
who are neglectful can be a cause of
stress to a student. Just like students who
are neglected or havent received any
attention since they were a child.
It is not a common seeing some students
going to school w/o their baon because
parents did not give them or students
coming to school w/o their breakfast
because of having no food on table.
It is not also common to engage in vices
like alcohol drinking and smoking w/o
their parents knowledge.

27 | P a g e
3. Separated parents
Another source of stressors at home still
involves our parents. There is an
increasing incidence of annulment and
divorce nowadays and parents failed to
see its effect on their children.
Having separated parents can be both
mentally and emotionally stressful to a
child the student may become stress
because he/she wants or longing for a
complete family. In other words he/she
wants his/her father and mother together
again witnessing his/her achievements.
And also you may be stressed especially
when parents wants you to choose
between them.
4. Siblings Rivalry
Who among you here have siblings?
Having brothers and sisters provides as a
good memories and experiences.
However competition between and
among siblings is a common scenario.
Sibling rivalry occur when children
perceived that there is a favoritism within

28 | P a g e
the family or competition for the attention
from parents or things that their siblings
have or they may be resentful on how
their sibling looks that may lead to fights
quarrels and resentment with each other.
In physical aspects, the child is force to do
things in their own, washes their own
clothes, cooks their food, and look after
younger siblings. And in emotional aspect
they want to share important things or
matters with their parents or would like to
seek guidance from them.
5. Parents living away from home
Who among you have parents living away from them?
The presence and guidance of parents is
very critical and formative years of a child.
However, even if the child is already
adolescent they still long for the presence
and guidance of their parents, they still
wish that they are living with them. Living
away from parents could affect the childs
physical and emotional well-being.
6. Financial insufficiency

29 | P a g e
While other enjoy their allowances given
by their parents many are trying to budget
their money so that they could buy things
they needed especially if it is for school
projects or requirement or some
miscellaneous that is needed to pay.
Therefore, they are forced to work or stop
studying due to inability of their parents to
provide for the family.
7. Responsibilities/household chores sino ang mga
ate at kuya ditto?
When you are the eldest, being ate/kuya
you earned most of the responsibilities in
the house especially when your parents
are not home. You becme the role model
to your younger siblings, and you have to
look after them and take good care of
them. You do wash the dishes, clean the
house, and what stresses you is you dont
have enough time already to do your
assignments and requirements and other
personal matters. And the last stressor
which may not really be as common as
the previous stressors but is also

30 | P a g e
experienced by some adolescent is
abuse and violence.
8. Abuse and Violence
There are many kinds of abuse- physical,
emotional, verbal or sexual abuse. This
may cause a big effect on them that may
lead to trauma or serious health problems
and sometimes it becomes a molding
aspect in ones life. This could also affect
their relationship with other people. They
may have difficulties in trusting other.

B. AT SCHOOL RELATED STRESSORS

What are the stressors that you encounter at school?
Can anyone tell me their stressors at school?
I heard that most of you mentioned that a difficult
subject of the possible causes of poor grades.
1. Poor Grades
Did you experience having a poor grade?
Have you ever experience having poor grade?
Can someone share his/her experiences?
Grades are one way to measure our
progress or performance at school. If you

31 | P a g e
are getting poor grades, it means that you
are not performing well in school.
Poor grades could be related to subject
matter.
What is your favorite subject? What about your least
favorite subjects? What subject did you incur the lowest
grade?
Why? Maybe this subject is not familiar to you or you may
find it difficult to understand. Interest in the subject could
also determine your performance, if you are not
interested in a particular subject then you will not learn
anything.
If you find the teacher inspiring, you will do better. Isnt
it? However, if not, the opposite happens.
Another possible reason for having poor grade is
the classroom environment. If your classroom
lacks electric fans making you feel hot while
listening to your lecture proper or if your
classroom is too small then you may not be able
to concentrate because of proximity with each
other.
If you do your homework or if you do not pass
them on time, this could easily result to a failing
grade.

32 | P a g e
Furthermore, procrastination can also result to a
poor grade. Some students put of tasks such as
doing their homework or studying for a test by
doing something else. (Surfing the net,
Facebook, twitter, and Instagram.). Or worse they
make excuses for doing such task.
Remember, procrastination is a habit that is difficult to
overcome
2. Hectic schedule
How many subjects do you have?
Another stressor is a hectic schedule
Juggling a hectic schedule can be tough for
students. This could relate to a lot of requirement
to be accomplished like exams, projects and
activities coupled with responsibilities at home
are beyond a tedious workload.
Another factor that could lead to a hectic schedule is
difficulty managing time; I heard that you have 9
subjects or more.
You are pre occupied to a schedule of which sometimes
you do not know what to prioritize. Which one of these
will you prioritize?
3. Requirements

33 | P a g e
It is stressful because you have to consider all the
requirement that are going to accomplish in order
to address the purpose why you have to come up
with those requirements.
As I said a while back, if you already have a hectic
schedule, additional requirements could be really
overwhelming.
The subject matter affects our grade. Stressors
are interrelated to each other. Subject matter that
is too difficult may affect our grades. A particular
subject may have lot of requirements that could
lead to a hectic schedule.
I would like to share a quotation by Winston
Churchill, success consists of going from failure
without loss of enthusiasm.
4. Peer pressure
Hey everyone! We are on to our next school related
stressor which is peer pressure. But before we talk about
that may I ask you.
Who are your peers? Take a look around you. Look to
the left. Look to the right. Look to the front and finally
behind you. Those beautiful and handsome faces that
you see are your peers.

34 | P a g e
Our peers are usually thought of as people who
are the same age and are in the same social
group as us. So all your classmates and
schoolmates are your peers. But what do we
mean when say peer pressure? Do you have an
idea?
Peer pressure is defined as pressure influenced
from a persons peers. Peer pressure often
involves pressure to engage in certain activities
to conform to certain standards set forth by the
group. Pressure could include dressing a certain
way (example), only associating with certain
people (example), or smoking. Because of peer
pressure you may be forced to do things against
your will, against your values, principles and
beliefs. And thats really stressful isnt it?
5. Teachers
Our next stressor is not it but rather a he or she. Can
you guess? Who these people are? The person you see
in front of the class every day?
Yes indeed. It is a fact that our teachers could be
our stressors as well. Teachers vary greatly in the
degree to which they treat low and high-
expectancy students. Low-expectancy students

35 | P a g e
are those that teachers perceive as students who
are not doing so as well in class. High-
expectancy students on the other hand along with
the adoption of new curriculum for all schools.
The high school from the former system will now
be called junior high school, while senior high
school will be the 11th and 12th year of the new
educational system.
This may put stress not only on the students but
also teachers. They would all have to adapt to all
the changes and the new requirements of the
curriculum.
The parents are also affected by this because the
new curriculum makes some of them skeptical. Is
this change really worth all the additional time
and effort? Is this worth additional expense?
Change can be great. Change can be really
timely and relevant as to the situation of our
educational system but it can also be really
stressful.
6. Extracurricular activities
Extracurricular activities are those which are not
related to the schools academic program but are

36 | P a g e
important for the holistic development of the
student.
We all know that extracurricular activities are a
normal part of our school life. However, as
mentioned before by Student Nurse Jerome, if we
already have a hectic schedule due to a lot of
requirements like homework and projects along
with our responsibilities at home( sino nga naman
ang hindi maloloka?) the stress could just easily
get to us.
If a student already has a lot on his or her plate
due to academics he or she may just view
extracurricular activities as a burden. And the
purpose or aim of such activities may then be not
fully realized.
7. New curriculum
And our last school- related stressors is something we
are either looking forward to or dreading about. It the new
curriculum. The reason all of you are called 1oth grades
now because of the new curriculum.

C. PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

1. Physical Changes Associated with Adolescence

37 | P a g e
Teenagers experienced rapid changes in body
build, thereby making them feel self-conscious
and concerned about their body image.
Among girls, physical changes may include
breast development, changes in height and
weight, growth of pubic and body hair, and the
start of period (menstruation)
For boys, physical changes may include growth
of the penis and testes (testicles), changes in the
body shapes and height, erections with
ejaculation, growth of body and facial hair, and
changes to voice.
For example, lets assume that tomorrow will be your
much awaited JS prom, now you tried to fit in your
favorite best dress that was given to you just few months
ago, Unfortunately, the dress that you want to wear was
no longer fits on you because you have gained weight
thereby causing stress.
2. Identity crisis
Perhaps for the first time in life, they contemplate their
roles in society including their careers, values and
gender role.
For example, you yourself dont know who you really are
and what do you want to be. Like in case of those college

38 | P a g e
students who keeps on shifting from one course to
another.
According to Erikson, its important to think
seriously about these issues and ultimately to
come enough of a serious resolution so that the
path you embark on in adulthood is one that you
have consciously chosen.
3. Relationships
Are major developmental milestones. They come
with all the other changes going on during
adolescence- physical, social and emotional. And
theyre linked to a childs growth interest in body
image and looks, independence and privacy.
Romantic relationships can bring lots of
emotional ups and downs to the one involved-
and sometimes for the whole family. The idea that
you might have these kinds of feelings can
sometimes be a bit confronting for yo. But these
feelings are leading you towards a deeper
capacity to care, share and develop intimate
relationship.
For example, assuming that you and your
boyfriend/girlfriend have some issues or problem, and
you have a schedules exam on the next day. What would

39 | P a g e
you feel? Or what would you do? Isnt it that you dont
feel like you want to browse your notes in preparation for
your exam? Or during your exam, you cant focus in
answering the given questions are those that teacher
perceives as students who do well in class.
According to a research, some teachers pay more
attention to high expectancy students and some teachers
engage in compensatory behaviors, focusing more on
low-expectancy students. There are two sides to this coin
but either way there is always a sense of imbalance or
inequality which causes stress to the students.

10. Identify different 12 S

stress 1. SPIRITUALITY Though there is no single
management agreed definition for spirituality, it has been
techniques broadly defined to be the search for the sacred,
and the quality or state of being spiritual. It is said
that spirituality is discovered in moments in which
the individual questions the meaning of personal
existence and attempts to place the self within a
broader ontological context.
For example doing meditation, it provides
an effective way of relaxing and LCD
refocusing on your perspective on things. LECTURE 30 minutes Laptop Quiz bee

And praying because we believe that God Sound system
have the ability to hear our prayers and Brochure
also he is our source of strength isnt it?
Especially in difficult times, we are
praying to God that hell give us the
strength and knowledge to be strong and
endure all those problems.
2. SELF-AWARENESS- You have to know yourself
well enough so as to increase your sensitivity and
balance of the relationships you have with the
people around you. Yes, you know yourself
already, but in self-awareness, you get a clearer
view of yourself, thereby helping you to be aware
of areas within yourself that still needs
improvement and developing a more productive
you.
3. SCHEDULING: TIME MANAGEMENT- Time is a
luxury no one could afford, so you should not put
off things that can be done now, or youll only
regret later. When used wisely, you can
accomplish great things and achieve satisfying
results.

41 | P a g e
Meaning, time is really precious as they
say it is because we cannot manufacture
or save time all we can do is that spend it
and make the most out of it. So, if we need
to do something today, we should do it
now or else we will just regret it later.
Make time as one of the most important
resources that we have.
4. SIESTA- Siesta means taking a break from your
daily activity to recharge. Think of it as a sort of
power nap which lets your mind relax for a few
minutes. This has been proven to boost your
energy and increase productivity.
5. STRETCHING/SENSIBLE DIET AND
EXERCISE- Exercise or stretching helps loosen
your muscles before the start of any activity while
increasing your bodys oxygen supply.
Whats more? It is totally free and can be
done anytime, anywhere!

also a form of exercise. Our body needs exercise
not only to tone our muscles, but also to help in
blood circulation.
Not only for a good circulation but we can
also express ourselves. We can also
release tensions or problems by playing
the sport we love. As they say, if we love
something that we are doing, it can make
us a happy person. Do you agree guys?
8. SOCIALS- No man is an island. We need each
other in order to survive. Socialization is very
important in our daily lives for us to reach out to
other people and enhance our relationship with
them. Socializing gives more meaning to life
because we get to share life experiences and
lessons with other people.
9. SOUNDS AND SONGS- We hear music
everyday- from the radio, television, music
players, and even people we meet along the
streets or any other place, singing their hearts
out. Music is a way to express our innermost
feelings and emotions. When we express
ourselves through producing sounds, we

43 | P a g e
somehow release the tension by the rhythmic
movement we make.
Is this right Elaine? Youre also a dancer
right?
Many people cannot express their own
selves by just saying it. They are
expressing it by dancing, singing, writing
poems, and writing an essay. In that way,
they can really bring out what they are
feeling and what they want to say.
Another example to release tension is
shouting and singing in a karaoke right? I
myself is doing it sometimes when Im
really really stressed and I can say that it
is effective.
10. SPEAK TO ME- Communication with others is a
great stress reliever. When we talk to someone,
our burdens somewhat lessen and that a great
deal of the pain we feel vanishes when we have
someone beside us. Sometimes, even the simple
act of listening and making the person feel your
presence and that youre there for them is
enough of a reminder to motivate them to
overcome the stress they are experiencing.

44 | P a g e
11. STRESS DEBRIEFING- When something bad
happens suddenly, people become so affected
with a critical incident. When this happens, it is
important that people who are experienced with
skills on stress debriefing assist those who have
been affected so that theyll be able to deal
positively with what happened, and be able to
cope more effectively.
In stress debriefing, there are group of
experts that will help a patient who
suffered from a traumatic accident for
example. They give advices on how a
patient will cope and how the patient can
continue his life.
12. SMILE Probably the fastest way of relieving
stress, at least for the time being. Smiling not only
relieves stress but it also motivates people to do
better. It encourages people to improve
themselves and achieve their best potentials.
