4th Grade Language Arts Syllabus

Course Overview
Instructor Prior to fourth grade, students have been learning to read and write. In fourth grade, the
Mrs. Terrie White expectation is for the students to read to learn and communicate in writing what they have
learned, understand and feel. The KY Common Core Standards for Language Arts focus
on two different types of texts, literature and informational, to ensure the students reach
Phone that reading expectation. In addition, the curriculum includes components of writing,
270-444-5750 ext. 5119 language, and speaking/listening which are aligned with the KY Common Core Standards.

Additional Information

Spelling instruction will be taught in each fourth grade homeroom instead of the reading rotation.

Each student will have a required reading goal in Renaissance Place. The goal will be set based on the data from the first
Star Reading test. . The reading goals indicate the amount of required daily reading that should be completed by the
students. At the beginning of each nine weeks, the students will receive a new AR goal to promote success in reading.
More information will be sent home within the first few weeks of school.

All students will be actively involved in a school wide reading program. Success for All is our school wide reading
program. The program is specifically designed to effectively teach reading to ensure growth and success in all students. It
is imperative that all of us understand the importance of student participation and parental support. Please make sure that
your child completes the daily reading logs required for homework. Reading logs are a huge component of the homework
grade for SFA. Each reading log must have a parent signature in order to receive homework credit.

Also, the students will be expected to keep a Leadership Data Notebook. The notebooks will help the students track their
growth throughout the school year. The students will graph and record the following assessments to monitor progress: L
to J Math Fluency, STAR Reading, STAR Math, and attendance.
