Workshop Goal and Procedure
Goal:
Process results from the previously constructed cylinder impact test model showing
multiple Workbench post-processing features.
Procedure:

Abbreviations used in Procedural Steps

As in the preceding workshop, the following abbreviations are

used:

DC = Double Click with Left Mouse Button

SC = Single Click with Left Mouse Button
RMB = Right Mouse Button Selection
D&D = Drag and Drop = Hold Left Mouse Button down on item
while dragging it to new location and then release it (i.e., Copy

Step 1 Restore the Taylor Impact Project
1.a Start ANSYS Workbench and Restore the
Archive taylor_basic.wbpz located in the
Workshop 4 folder (this is the project set up
in Workshop 1)

1.b Edit the Setup cell

Step 2 Adjust the Legend Controls
2.a Select the Equivalent Plastic Strain result in order to test changing the legend.
The values shown here may be slightly different from those obtained in class,
depending on the settings used.

2.b Hide the Plate

(RMB Hide
Body) if not
already hidden.

2.c Show the

elements if not
already shown

Step 2 Adjust the Legend Controls
2.d Double Click on the second to the last entry and type in a plastic strain value of
0.35 (35%). Likewise, set the second entry to 0.70. The contour plot changes
accordingly, as shown.

Step 3 Show the Capped Surface
Displays 3.a Select the
display mode
Capped 3.b First plot the
IsoSurfaces. surface where the
equivalent plastic
strain is 0.57 m/m.
Either type the

m/m. All strains
below that value
will be displayed.
3.d Then cap the strain
levels below 0.57 m/m.
3.e Finally, reset the All strains above that
display mode to value will be displayed.

Step 4 Create a Section Plane
RMB
4.a Before creating a section plane, Show the plate again and select
the +Z axis on the Triad to get a front view (see below).

4.b Define a New Section Plane by first picking the icon.

1st point

4.c Next, define the first point of

the plane by clicking on the
screen with the LMB (Left Mouse
Button) and then slide the cursor
to another location before
Triad releasing the LMB, as shown.
2nd point

Step 4 Create a Section Plane
4.d The model on one side of the section plane
will remain visible, while the other side will
disappear
A small square controller is now shown at the
location of the plane

4.e Now select the isometric view (via

the cyan-colored ball on the Triad)
and slide the small control square
of the section plane along the line
shown in both directions via the
LMB.

Step 4 Create a Section Plane
4.f As you slide the section plane square 4.g Select the No WireFrame
controller to the right, more of the model display mode to get a better
will appear. The display can get a little view of the model as you slide
cluttered with the element boundaries the section plane controller
shown, so ...
back and forth.

Step 4 Create a Section Plane
4.h Select the Show Undeformed WireFrame display mode followed by the Show
Undeformed Model display mode.

Note: For section views, Undeformed shows the Hidden Deformed geometry as
opposed to the true Undeformed geometry.

Step 4 Create a Section Plane
4.i Now uncheck the Section Plane 1 display.

4.j Verify that the Show

Undeformed Model display
mode now actually shows the
true Undeformed geometry.

4.k Return to the Show Elements display mode.
