This description of a MAN B&W governed fuel rack system and change over to engine side control is based on a modern
K98MC engine.

The photo opposite shows an overall view of a local

control station on a MAN B&W MC engine

This photo shows the electronic governor control and the

output shaft.

The governor output shaft is linked to the emergency

control change over mechanism situated at the local control
station. Under normal operation the governor output shaft
operates the fuel regulating shaft.

The link from the change over mechanism is connected to

the fuel regulating shaft. The fuel regulating shaft runs the
length of the engine through the bearing blocks as shown.

At each fuel pump a spring loaded link is connected to the

fuel pump rack operating rod.

This photo shows the rack operating rod (lower rod) and
the Variable Injection Timing linkage going into the fuel
pump.

In an emergency, for instance in the case of a control or governor failure, the engine can be changed to local control. The
engine can then be stopped, started, reversed and the speed controlled from the local control station. The two pictures
below show the layout of the control station.

To change the fuel control to local control, the locking

hook shown must be disengaged. The handwheel is then
rotated in an anticlockwise direction until the local control
operating shaft and arm engage and operate the fuel
regulating shaft. The governor is now disengaged and will
no longer operate the fuel regulating shaft.

If changing over when the engine is running than the local

fuel control must be matched to the engine speed before
change over.

To start and stop the engine locally the safety locking pins must be removed and the local /remote start lever moved to the
emergency position. The engine can be started and reversed from the local control position to telegraph orders shown on
the local control panel. The operator is now the engine governor. He cannot leave the control station and must pay close
attention to the engine revolutions which he now controls with the hand control wheel.
