Lets Study This

Take a look at how the past perfect tense of verbs are changed to present perfect
tense and future perfect tense.

What do you notice about the verbs in the sentences?

Past Perfect Present Perfect Future Perfect

had + listened has + listened have will/shall have + listened
+ listened
We always use the past participle of verbs in the past perfect, present perfect and
future perfect tenses of verbs.

But how do we differentiate the past perfect, present perfect and future perfect?

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

The present perfect expresses an action that was completed sometime in the past
or is still continuing in the present. It is formed by using has/have + past participle
form of the verb. We use has if the subject is singular and have if the subject is
plural.

The uses of present perfect tense are the following:

a. Present Perfect Tense puts emphasis on the result.

Example: She has written a short story.

b. Present Perfect Tense is an action that is still going on.

Example: The show has not started yet.

c. Present Perfect Tense is an action that stopped recently.

Example: Mother has cooked dinner.

d. Present Perfect Tense is finished action that has an influence on the present.
Example: Ed has lost my key.

e. Present Perfect Tense is an action that has taken place once, never or
several times before the moment of speaking
Example: I have never been to Boracay.

The signal words of present perfect are already, ever, just, never, not yet, so far, till
now, up to now.

FUTURE PEREFECT TENSE

The English future perfect tense can be understood as a combination of

future time and the present perfect tense: it shows an action or event that
started in the past, is starting or will start in the future and that will also be
completed at some future time.

The form of the future perfect tense has these parts:

will + have + the past participle

The Future Perfect Tense (#1), by Dennis Oliver - Free English Grammar Lessons. Accessed May
21, 2017. http://www.eslcafe.com/grammar/future_perfect_tense01.html.

The signal words are until, before, by the end of the day, by the end of the week,
by the end of the month,

Examples:
By the end of the year, I shall have finished reading the bible.
My father will have bought a new car before his retirement.
