Hello
Thank you for meeting with me yesterday, July 13th. The following are the notes from our meeting:
Supervisor:
Required ETLD classes that include doctorate students have changed and have not been readily
available. The class availability is as follows:
Based on the course availability, the earliest the comprehensive exam would take place would be Spring
of 2019 -however, that is ONLY if EDUC 867 is offered fall of 2018 -otherwise the comprehensive exam
will be pushed out further in 2019.
*doctorate student given an exception to take required classes with master's students
*directed readings course with doctorate student and willing faculty member
*supervisor would like doctorate student to take EDUC 866 with either masters students or as a directed
readings class in Fall 2017. **However, if EDUC 867 is not available Fall of 2018 or before, this would not
advance the student's progression in the ETLD program and would still delay the comprehensive exam.
Supervisor will check on course availability of EDUC 867 in the future.
*to send the supervisor all EDUC 866, EDUC 863 classes listed for masters students
* Discussion about the process. Student was wondering if the student picks the committee, can a
committee member be outside SFU? Supervisor stated that the committee is typically all SFU but
doesn't need to be necessarily within the department. Outside expertise could be considered. The
student asked if there are faculty that the student should reach out to and get to know? Supervisor said
the committee process will be discussed further after the draft research proposal is completed.
3. Research Proposal
*Outline the research proposal, include the problem the research is trying to address (why and how),
identify the gap and justify the research problem. Construct a concept map with the main points of the
research and details under each.
*Student to send conference proposal(s) to supervisor Monday, July 17 or Tuesday, July 18 for feedback
*Supervisor and student will work together to analyze largely qualitative data from a large assessment
project
*set up a meeting with supervisor to discuss an article idea and to discuss analyzing data and a schedule
of collaborative work towards writing and publication
*supervisor shared with students other conferences in the field of ETLD, namely
*student shared experience in summer EDUC 840 course and the valuable strategies learned related to
reading and writing.
*student thanked supervisor for: 1) introduction and help with AERA 2017, 2) referral to EDUC 840
course, and 3) the differences between them in critical thinking strategies and what the student is
learning from the supervisor, 4) supervisors time and willingness to meet regarding research and
questions.
