Legal Aid

Before the Legal Aid started, I was tasked to go the Civil Registrars Office
and the Register of Deeds. My assignment was to ask for copies of the
requirements of documents and other pertinent papers regarding the usual legal
problem like change of name, correction of entry, late registration of birth
certificate, etc. It was also my duty to ask for the procedure regarding land
registration cases.

I went to the Civil Registrars Office in Talisay and asked one of the officers
there if they can give me copies of the requirements as well as the form of the
petition. She hesitated at first because of their bad experience during the
previous year. She told me that the students conducting the legal aid the previous
year also asked for the petition form of change of name or correction of entries.
The students photocopied this forms and gave them to the clients. Afterwards,
the clients filled them up and notarized the same without complying with the
requirements mandated by law. That was when the problem arose. There were
many people who complaining at the office because they said that they already
paid a lot of money to process the said petition. I promised her that I wouldnt do
the same mistake so that no problem would arise. She then gave the copies of the
requirements and the form of the petition to me.

The following day, I went to the office of the Register of Deeds to ask for
the procedures and requirements on how to register a land. They didnt have
copies for the procedure but only posters. They told me that they got the
procedures and requirements from Manila. So what I did was to take pictures of
the procedures and requirements and typed them so that it can be printed and be
reproduced.

On the day of the legal aid, I was tasked by our leader to be the one to give
the requirements to my classmates and explain what they need to do when
talking to their clients respecting a particular legal problem concerning civil status
or correction of entries. Our leader also told me not to take any clients because
my only duty is to give and explain the requirements needed and so that I can
focus on my task.

I also assisted some of the clients when asked me what to do on their

particular legal problem. However, I referred them to my classmates so that the
client can fully state what his particular problem is. After my duty, I helped on
other task even not assigned to me so that the program will be successful and
worth remembering. I felt happy and satisfied even if it is exhausting because
knowing that we helped a lot of people who is in need is worth the effort.
