PERSONAL RESPONSE

LIAM TORRES
Advertising is the art of convincing people to spend money they dont have on
something they dont need. (Will Rogers)

Advertising is generally known as the act or practice of calling public attention to one's
product, service, or need, especially by paid announcements in newspapers,
magazines, radios or televisions. However, Rogers argues that advertising is just the
way companies and businesses take advantage of people so to convince them to
spend money they lack of in order to buy unnecessary things.

The first point to be analyzed about the quote, is the art of convincing part. There is
no doubt that the main goal of advertising is to persuade people to buy the product or
service they offer. Personally, I completely agree with this part of the statement, as
there is no much to be argued.

The other point to be argued is the to spend money they dont have part. When
people are convinced by an advertisement, they will want to buy the product or
service it offers. I do believe advertising does not care if buying the product they offer
imply people to be indebted and spoil their economic situation asking for loans and
mortgages in order to buy a product that costs more than what they can pay.

The last point to be argued is the something they dont need part. Most of what
advertisement offers are want, but no needs, that people buy just to show those
products they acquired to their friends and families so to boast. In consequence, I also
agree with this part of the statement.

In conclusion, I agree with all the parts of the statement. People are heavily influenced
by media in order to spend their money in unnecessary things, and sometimes
threatening their economic situation.
