Mediterranean Shipping Company

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is the worlds second largest shipping line. The privately
owned company was founded in 1970 in Geneva, Switzerland. It operates worldwide, serving 5
continents and calling at 316 ports.
Despite having a larger number of employees in the world and have a similar amount capacity of
containers that Maersk, this Swiss company is located in the second site, since its movement of
TEU's was much lower.
This company has a capacity of 2,193,000 Teus in their ships. According to Alphaliner owns
13.5% of the market at the global level. MSC has the largest orderbook of any container carrier, at
42 vessels with a combined capacity of more than 480,000 TEUs as of mid-August 2014.
They offer so much more than just ocean carriage. Theyve also developed a comprehensive
infrastructure of road, rail and warehousing which allows them to offer fully bespoke solutions
designed to match customer needs.
In 2015, MSC transported over 1.1 million TEU of reefer cargo. MSCs services go far beyond the
port. Offering inland transport by road, rail and barge. By using a complete intermodal network,
their customers can rely on a real door to door service.
Their trade service teams are fully trained and offer destination specific knowledge and support for
large cargoes requiring specialist equipment such as platforms, open top containers or flat racks.
Their extensive inventory of specialist equipment gives them the capability to transport large,
heavy and irregular sized cargo.
Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co. have announced plans for a 10 year vessel sharing
agreement on the Asia-Europe, trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic trades as te carrier stive to better
utilize capacity in the wake of the failed bid to launch the P3 Network. The new network consist
of 185 ships totalling 2.1m TEUs on 21 strings.
After the ruling, Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co didnt request an administrative
review, launch administrative proceedings or revise the original proposal, which they were entitled
to do. Instead, P3 was immediately terminated, and the top two players formed the 2M alliance in
early July 2015 after dropping CMA CGM.
MSC Oscar set a new world record, it has a nominal capacity of 19,224 TEUs that makes it the
largest container ship afloat.
In Panama MSC is calling at two ports, Balboa on the Pacific and Cristobal on the Atlantic are up
by 1.8 percent and 3.4 percent respectively through July 2015. PPC CEO Aitor Ibarreche said
Cristobal is now serving two Mediterranean Shipping Co. U.S. Gulf-east coast South America
strings as well as U.S. Gulf to Brazil service in collaboration with Hamburg SD.
Among the products that the company exports from Panama we can find: gold, bananas, shrimp,
sugar, iron and steel waste, pineapples, watermelons. Their principal trading partners (exports) are
US, Canada, Costa Rica and Netherlands. At imports their principal trading partners are US, China,
Costa Rica and Mexico with products like fuel derivatives, medicines, vehicles, iron and steel rods,
cellular phones.
